Bourne, [Sir] Frederick Samuel Augustus; H. Neville; H. Bell.
Report of the Mission to China of the Blackburn Chamber of Commerce, 1896-7, I-II. [TWO VOLUMES].
Two volumes in one. Royal octavo. Pp. xii, 152; vii, 386. Group-portrait as frontispiece. Plus large folding map preceding frontispiece, folding map bound-in, and large fold-out plan "Section of Main Caravan Route (.)" bound at end of volume I. Includes a transcript of Bourne's letter to the Marquess of Salisbury. Appendices, glossary, tables, text figures. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's maroon full cloth, bit soiled and frayed in places, spine gilt; joints and part of spine mended for splits, spine-ends bumped or chipped, maps and first and last leaves foxed. In good overall condition, very good interior. - - First edition. Sir Frederick Samuel Augustus Bourne (1854-1940) was Consul in charge of the Blackburn Commercial Mission. Between October 1896 and June 1897, members of the Blackburn Commission travelled some 4,300 miles through the interior of south and central China. They collected detailed information on all factors relating to how the Chinese met "their own wants in the matter of textiles", including material on marketing, distribution, indigenous handicraft production, taxation and "local customs and usage as they might affect [the United Kingdom's] textile industry". The Commission also investigated in detail remote or less known parts of the country, and provided an account of means of communication by land and water. The report was published in two lengthy sections by The North-East Lancashire Press Company in Blackburn, a very rare imprint. The first part was compiled by Bourne; the second by H. Neville and H. Bell. See further: "Commerce and Capitalism in Chinese Societies", Gary G. Hamilton (London, Routledge, 2006). Bourne published also, among others, "The Lo-Fou mountains: An excursion" (Hongkong, 1895); and "Trade of central and southern China" (Shanghai, 1898).

Boyd Julia
A Dance With the Dragon: The Vanished World of Peking's Foreign Colony
8vo, hardcover, pp. 263. Julia Boyd tells the fascinating tale of the foreign community surviving in Peking between the end of the Ching Dynasty and Mao s communist revolution. It is a great story very well told - turmoil behind, turmoil ahead and turmoil all around. --Chris Patten, Chancellor of Oxford University, Chairman of the BBC and former Governor of Hong Kong Based on a treasure-trove of original sources, this book gives an enthralling insight into the expatriate community in Peking during the half-century before the triumph of Mao. Anyone who wants to understand China's relationship with foreigners, today as well as yesterday, should read it. --Piers Brendon, author of The Decline and Fall of the British Empire A fascinating account sourced from many previously unpublished letters and archives. Boyd's characters flit on the surface of the city like water beetles, unaware of the depths below. --Frances Wood, Curator of Chinese Collections, British Library, author of China's First Emperor and His Terracotta Warriors. '...with its fresh insights into this historic non-meeting of minds, [A Dance With the Dragon] appears at an opportune moment.' --Literary Review A fascinating account sourced from many previously unpublished letters and archives. Boyd's characters flit on the surface of the city like water beetles, unaware of the depths below. --Frances Wood, Curator of Chinese Collections, British Library, author of China's First Emperor and His Terracotta Warriors. 'Boyd s volume stands alone as a valuable history of our foreign predecessors, but also offers a healthy reminder of the responsibilities incumbent upon those who make China their home.' --Asian Review of Books A fascinating account sourced from many previously unpublished letters and archives. Boyd's characters flit on the surface of the city like water beetles, unaware of the depths below. --Frances Wood, Curator of Chinese Collections, British Library, author of China's First Emperor and His Terracotta Warriors. 'It is as much a glimpse of a corner of the fashionable intellectual life of Europe and America in exile as it is a guide to the vanished world of Peking itself.' --Asian Affairs A fascinating account sourced from many previously unpublished letters and archives. Boyd's characters flit on the surface of the city like water beetles, unaware of the depths below. --Frances Wood, Curator of Chinese Collections, British Library, author of China's First Emperor and His Terracotta Warriors. Bradanini Alberto
Cina. L'irresistibile Ascesa

Imperial Bandits: Outlaws and Rebels in the China-Vietnam Borderlands
8vo, br. ed.pp.266. The Black Flags raided their way from southern China into northern Vietnam, competing during the second half of the nineteenth century against other armed migrants and uplands communities for the control of commerce, specifically opium, and natural resources, such as copper. At the edges of three empires (the Qing empire in China, the Vietnamese empire governed by the Nguyen dynasty, and, eventually, French Colonial Vietnam), the Black Flags and their rivals sustained networks of power and dominance through the framework of political regimes. This lively history demonstrates the plasticity of borderlines, the limits of imposed boundaries, and the flexible division between apolitical banditry and political rebellion in the borderlands of China and Vietnam. Imperial Bandits contributes to the ongoing reassessment of borderland areas as frontiers for state expansion, showing that, as a setting for many forms of human activity, borderlands continue to exist well after the establishment of formal boundaries.

Brady, Anne-Marie
Making the Foreign Serve China: Managing Foreigners in the People s Republic
8vo, hardcover, illustrated edition. 320 pages. This book provides the first detailed analysis of a distinctive element of Chinese foreign policy, waishi, the external policies intended to influence and control both foreigners themselves as well as Chinese citizens contact with and perception of outsiders. The term also comprises China s external relations-both official state-to-state and unofficial or people-to-people diplomacy. Anne-Marie Brady argues that by encompassing all matters related to foreigners and foreign things, not merely diplomacy, waishi has proven to be one of the most effective tools in the CCP s repertoire for building and then sustaining its hold on power. The author s groundbreaking research is based on a previously unexplored genre of classified waishi materials, extensive interviews with waishi officials and foreign participants of the system, as well as extensive archival research
