Tout en sortant de l'oubli une figure de l'Histoire moderne de Chine, cette première traduction en français des conférences sur "L'avenir de la culture chinoise" prononcées en 1933 par Chen Xujing, grand théoricien de l'"occidentalisme intégral", permet de retourner aux sources de l'occidentalisme chinois. L'ample débat que ces conférences ont suscité dans les années 1930 -1940 entre de surcroît en résonance avec des thématiques aujourd'hui remises à l'honneur en Chine. Né en 1903 dans la province du Guangdong, Chen Xujing a en partie grandi à Singapour. Puis, en 1922, il a entrepris un long parcours universitaire qui l'a successivement mené de Shanghai aux Etats-Unis et en Allemagne. A son retour en Chine en 1932, il s'est activement employé à répandre son credo occidentaliste, en tenant ses fameuses conférences sur "L'avenir de la culture chinoise" qui, publiées en janvier 1934 dans le journal Guangzhou Minguo ribao, ont déclenché un intense débat. Chen Xujing n'a jamais affiché de position politique, ce qui ne l'a pas empêché d'être malmené pendant la "révolution culturelle", en raison de ses convictions occidentalistes : il est décédé en 1967, suite aux mauvais traitements qu'il a subis. Mais, l'oubli dans lequel il est rapidement tombé, doublé du discrédit que comportent implicitement les orientations actuelles de la Chine constituent, quels que soient les impensés de sa doctrine, une autre grande injustice qui méritait d'être réparée.‎	MareMagnum Pali s.r.l. Januar bis 4. März 1934 in den Räumen der Preußischen Akademie der Künste am Pariser Platz 274 Werke gezeigt wurden, ist die moderne chinesische Malerei eines der wichtigen Sammelgebiete des Museums für Ostasiatische Kunst. Leider ist von den sechzehn Bildern, die dem Museum nach der Ausstellung geschenkt wurden, bis heute noch keines wieder nach Berlin zurückgekehrt, sie befinden sich weiterhin als Kriegsbeute in Rußland. Nach dem Kriege wurde sowohl im Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst in Dahlem wie in der Ostasiatischen Sammlung auf der Museumsinsel chinesische Malerei der Gegenwart, d.h. moderne Malerei, die sich aus der Tradition heraus entwickelt hat, gesammelt. So besitzt das Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst heute eine der umfangreichsten Sammlungen chinesischer Malerei des 20. Jahrhunderts in Europa, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf den fünfziger bis siebziger Jahren liegt. Mit der Ausstellung von Bildern des 1921 in Peking geborenen und heute in Taiwan lebenden Architekten und Malers Chen Chi-kwan wird erstmals retrospektiv das Werk eines chinesischen Künstlers in Berlin vorgestellt. Während in Deutschland gegenwärtig mit großem finanziellen Aufwand produzierte Ausstellungen der sog. »China Avantgarde« oder der »Zeitgenössischen Malerei«, d.h. der Kunst im internationalen Stil (Ölmalerei, Pop-Art, Installationen, Video-Kunst, etc.) von großem Presseecho begleitet Aufmerksamkeit erregen, versuchen die beiden Museen für Ost-asiatische Kunst in Köln und Berlin dem Eindruck entgegenzuwirken, dies sei die moderne Kunst Chinas; sie ist allenfalls eine winzige Facette des gegenwärtigen Kunstschaffens. Chen Chi-kwans Bilder sind nicht spektakulär, sie sind von kleinem Format und mit feinem Pinsel gemalt, sie erfordern die Geduld des Betrachters und genaues Hinsehen. Die Bilder verraten den Architekten. Charakteristisch für sein Werk sind die übersichtlich angeordneten Kompositionen, die klar definierten Strukturen und der Hang zum Detailreichtum. Die fein-gliedrige Pinselarbeit mag mancher Liebhaber klassischer chinesischer Malerei als Schwäche auslegen, fehlt bei oberflächlichem Betrachten doch der »kraftvolle Pinselstrich«. Doch Chen Chi-kwans Kunst ist in der Tradition der Literatenmalerei verankert; Themen, Pinselführung und Farbgebung entwickeln sich aus diesem reichen Erbe und fügen ihm neue Impulse hinzu. Es sind nicht nur »schöne« Bilder; dem Suchenden und Verständigen erschließen sich durchaus auch die Gedanken und kritische Einstellungen des Künstlers. Nicht alleine in der Handschrift, der Art und Weise, wie er den Pinsel führt, läßt sich seine Persönlichkeit erkennen. Chen Chi-kwans künstlerisches und ästhetisches Interesse wurde früh durch sein Studium der Architektur, Innenarchitektur und der Malerei sowohl in China, als auch in den Vereinigten Staaten geweckt und gefördert. Die Eindrücke, die er während seiner zahlreichen Reisen zu Land, zu Wasser und in der Luft gewann und seine Fähigkeit, Neuem stets unvoreingenommen gegenüberzutreten, ermöglichten es ihm, in seiner Malerei den Beweis zu erbringen, daß es Wege gibt, die Tradition der chinesischen Malerei erfolgreich weiterzuführen. Dies zu erreichen bedarf es nicht allein der abstrakten Pinselarbeit, sondern auch der Fähigkeit, Altes und Neues, westliche und chinesische Gedanken miteinander zu verbinden. Chen Chi-kwan ist ein Künstler, der mittels seiner profunden Kenntnisse der chinesischen wie der westlichen Kultur und Kunst in der Lage ist, der traditionellen chinesischen Malerei neue Impulse zu vermitteln. Sein Werk weist die Klagen derer zurück, die behaupten, die traditionelle chinesische Malerei habe keine Zukunft mehr oder die dieser gar ihre Existenzberechtigung absprechen. Seit Beginn dieses Jahrhunderts ist China neuen Ideologien und politischen Systemen ausgesetzt, und seither fühlen sich die Künstler vor die Frage gestellt, entweder die Tradition zu beleben und weiterzuentwickeln oder sie ganz aufzugeben und sich der »internationalen Kunst« zu widmen. Letzterem scheint die Begeisterung westlicher Ausstellungsmacher und Galeristen Recht zu geben, die, befreit vom Ballast der fremden Kunstgeschichte, sich mühelos ohne große intellektuelle Anstrengungen einen neuen Kunstmarkt erschließen können. Chens Bilder weisen nicht die Absicht auf, die Malerei revolutionieren oder gar wiederbeleben zu wollen. Er folgt in seiner Malerei keiner Schule, seine Bilder sind seine Ideen und Eindrücke, sie sind das Ergebnis eines natürlichen Entstehungsprozesses. Vielen Künstlern dieses Jahrhunderts wurde der Ehrentitel »Einer der letzten« oder gar »Letzter Literatenmaler« verliehen, obwohl alle das Malen als Profession betrieben. Chen Chi-kwan war immer in der privilegierten Lage, nicht für seinen Lebensunterhalt malen zu müssen. Er kann es sich leisten, wie die großen Maler und Schreibmeister der Vergangenheit, sich seiner Kunst als einem Mittel der Selbstkultivierung zu widmen. Betrachten wir seine Bilder, so spürt man, wie er sich mit Lust dem Erschaffen von Landschaften, kosmischen Visionen, Innenräumen, Gärten, Tierdarstellungen und Stilleben hingibt.
