Chen concentrates on Beijing and Shanghai, two of China's most important cities, and she considers how various interventions carried a lasting influence. The advent of the workhouse, the denigration of the nonworking poor as "social parasites," efforts to police homelessness and vagrancy--all had significant impact on the lives of people struggling to survive. Chen provides a crucially needed historical lens for understanding how beliefs about poverty intersected with shattering historical events, producing new welfare policies and institutions for the benefit of some, but to the detriment of others. Tout en sortant de l'oubli une figure de l'Histoire moderne de Chine, cette première traduction en français des conférences sur "L'avenir de la culture chinoise" prononcées en 1933 par Chen Xujing, grand théoricien de l'"occidentalisme intégral", permet de retourner aux sources de l'occidentalisme chinois. L'ample débat que ces conférences ont suscité dans les années 1930 -1940 entre de surcroît en résonance avec des thématiques aujourd'hui remises à l'honneur en Chine. Né en 1903 dans la province du Guangdong, Chen Xujing a en partie grandi à Singapour. Puis, en 1922, il a entrepris un long parcours universitaire qui l'a successivement mené de Shanghai aux Etats-Unis et en Allemagne. A son retour en Chine en 1932, il s'est activement employé à répandre son credo occidentaliste, en tenant ses fameuses conférences sur "L'avenir de la culture chinoise" qui, publiées en janvier 1934 dans le journal Guangzhou Minguo ribao, ont déclenché un intense débat. Chen Xujing n'a jamais affiché de position politique, ce qui ne l'a pas empêché d'être malmené pendant la "révolution culturelle", en raison de ses convictions occidentalistes : il est décédé en 1967, suite aux mauvais traitements qu'il a subis. Mais, l'oubli dans lequel il est rapidement tombé, doublé du discrédit que comportent implicitement les orientations actuelles de la Chine constituent, quels que soient les impensés de sa doctrine, une autre grande injustice qui méritait d'être réparée.

8vo, hardcover in dj, Land of Big Numbers is a collection of ten short stories about characters who live in, or have emigrated from, present-day China. The collection reminds me of other favorite short-story collections: James Joyce's The Dubliners; William Maxwell's All the Days and Nights; Edward P. Jones' Lost in the City and All Aunt Hagar's Children; Wendell Berry's That Distant Land; Jhumpa Lahiri's The Interpreter of Maladies. This collection reminds me of those collections not because it is similar to them in style, but because, like them, it paints a picture of an entire society simply by telling the stories of everyday characters living out everyday lives in that society. Some of the stories struck me as somber, telling the stories of marginalized and anonymous characters living on the fringes of a society predominantly dedicated to "progress" in the form of economic development and the accumulation of wealth. In that sense, the stories say as much about life in America as about life in China. What nevertheless makes the stories delightful is the finesse and felicity with which the author writes and the compassion with which she portrays her protagonists. One example is "New Fruit," which tells the story of qiguo, a mysterious and delicious new fruit that brings all who taste it a promise of hope and happiness that does not last. My favorite example is "Flying Machine," which tells the story of Cao Cao, an old farmer who constructs an airplane from spare parts but whose real triumph is his never-ending drive to rearrange old things into new things and to transform humble things into magnificent things. May we all live our lives as Cao Cao lives his!
