China; New York
Mandarin He Sing of the Chinese Junk". Signature with period caption
New York 1847. Ephemera. Very good condition. Signature of crew member of the 'Keying' the first ship from China ever to dock in New York City identified as "the Mandarin: He Sing Xi Sheng". The ship moored off the Battery in Manhattan in July 1847 much to the anger of the crew which had signed on for a voyage to Singapore and Batavia only. However the ship was a smashing success with 4000 visitors paying 25 cents each to board the vessel and gaze at the crew and ship. P.T. Barnum got in on the action by exhibiting a replica and claiming some of the crew were the original Chinese. 'Keying' sailed on to Boston and London and was noted in the press as the first junk to round the Cape of Good Hope or to have sailed in British waters. He Sing was still on board: "The ROYAL CHINESE JUNK "KEYING" manned by a Chinese Crew. Visitors received by a Mandarin of rank and Chinese Artist of celebrity. The Illustrated London News 29 July 1848. He Sing's signature in black ink on blue card with period pen inscription on white paper below "Mandarin He Sing of the Chinese Junk". with Clipping from the Illustrated London News showing a "Chinese Banner" with an invitation to readers to assist in its translation an early version of crowd sourcing. China; October League
Women in the Chinese Revolution
1970. China WOMEN October League Marxist-Leninist. Chicago: October League 1976. 16 pages. 5.5" x 8.5" illustrated with black and white photos of Women's Day marches the woman are all performing tasks at work on the image. The Liberation of Women in China. Printed by Highland Park: Internationals Socialists n.d. 49 pages. 5.5" x 8.5" inches. Original wrappers Pamphlet. Argues that the liberation of women in China had become subordinate to the needs of the state and industrialization. Highland Park: International Socialists n.d. circa 1970s. Original printed wrappers 49 pages. 5.5 × 8.5 inches. Tables footnotes.

A scarce radical pamphlet issued by the International Socialists examining the gender politics of post-revolutionary China. The work critiques the Chinese Communist Party's claims to women's emancipation contending that the liberation of women had been made subordinate to the demands of state-building and industrial growth. In opposition to official party rhetoric the pamphlet situates women's issues within the broader political economy arguing that while the Communist revolution opened limited avenues for women's participation in the labor force and public life genuine equality was sacrificed to the state's overriding needs of production modernization and social control. Tables and statistical data are included to support its argument with footnotes directing readers to both Chinese sources and Western Marxist analysis. Pamphlets from the International Socialists are relatively uncommon especially those with sustained attention to global feminist and socialist struggles. This text is significant in documenting how New Left and Trotskyist organizations in the United States attempted to reframe Chinese Communism through a feminist lens situating women's emancipation not as a fulfilled revolutionary promise but as a deferred and compromised project. For institutional collections it offers an important perspective on the intersections of gender Marxism and internationalism in the mid-20th century while also reflecting the intellectual currents of American socialist critique. Mild wear to wrappers otherwise well-preserved. Overall. unknown

Real photo postcards of the Xinhài Gémìng Xinhai Revolution of 1911 Taken by an American
1911. Photography. A group of 13 vernacular photographs printed on postcards taken in 1911 by an American who was involved in supporting the Xinhai Revolution of 1911. The postcards are all annotated on the verso and give a picture of US involvement in San Francisco Yokohama and Canton. Two postcards illustrate the ties with Japan. One is a photo of a group of six Japanese in Western clothing including a young woman in a large open touring car with the annotation "This picture was taken in front of the Clift sic House Aug. 20 1911. " Cliff house was a prominent hotel in San Francisco. At this time the U.S. Navy was entertaining the Japanese training squadron in San Francisco. Another card shows two American men in rickshaws "Jinrikshas in Yokohama Japan". We presume that these men were the American naval attachés or diplomats. The other 11 images are taken in Canton and two are related to the "72 Martyrs" that were beheaded. The annotations on the verso read:
"Martyrs" who were beheaded by orders of Imperial Government for part they took in destroying the Viceroy's office 4/27/11. Soldiers are lined up on opposite side of pond just below people standing on embankment.; 11/19/11 Soldiers Rebels & sympathizers holding religious services at the graves of 72 "martyrs" buried in Canton cemetery. These were beheaded by orders of Imperial Govt. for party they took in destroying the Viceroy's office - 4/27/11. The rest are views of Canton-Canton River sampans & S. S. Wilmington in the distance American Gun boat; English Bridge Shameen to Canton a sign advertising "Yuen Hang Boulanger Canton" hangs to the right of the bridge; French Bridge Shameen to Canton this rather poor film; "One of the Bravest" on Shameen - looking up Central Ave. a soldier with a white domed hat and white puttees; Another view of the English Bridge Shameen to Canton; The American Consul's residence & office; Rear entrance to American consul's office - building on right used by the consul's coolies. Dr. Swan of Canton Hospital in his private sedan chair; along the Bund of Kook Four a suburb of Canton; View from the French Concession of Shameen looking towards Canton & near "French" Bridge. The Xinhai Revolution pinyin: Xinhài Gémìng also known as the Chinese Revolution or the Revolution of 1911 was a revolution that overthrew China's last imperial dynasty the Qing dynasty and established the Republic of China ROC. The revolution consisted of many revolts and uprisings. The turning point was the Wuchang uprising on 10 October 1911 which was the result of the mishandling of the Railway Protection Movement. The revolution ended with the abdication of the six-year-old Last Emperor Puyi on 12 February 1912 that marked the end of 2000 years of imperial rule and the beginning of China's early republican era. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen led the Xinhai Revolution to victory in 1911.
The Republic of China in Taiwan and the People's Republic of China on the mainland both consider themselves the legitimate successors to the Xinhai Revolution and honor the ideals of the revolution including nationalism republicanism modernization of China and national unity. 10 October is commemorated in Taiwan as Double Ten Day the National Day of the ROC. In mainland China Hong Kong and Macau the day is celebrated as the Anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution. Wikipedia. unknown

CHINESE ANCESTORS PHOTOGRAPHS, SOUTH CHINA
A PAIR OF CANTONESE ANCESTOR PHOTOGRAPHS: MAN AND A WOMAN
Hong Kong n.d. ca. 1900. A pair of large b.w. photographs woman: 31.5 x 40.5; man: 31 x 47 cm. very good condition minor wear on eges a few spots board mounted with studio brushed touch ups and accents. OBSCURE This is a pair of matching "Ancestor Photographs." They were taken about 1900 in Hong Kongand are probably photos of a Cantonese husband and wife. They were used posthumously to be placed on the family altar for worship remembrance and to make offerings of incense and food during the year. STUDIO POSED: The works were clearly taken in a studio. Each has been slightly enhanced by the photographer's brush upon development. The man's photo shows touch up and accent in his eyebrows moustache the lines and folds of his eye lids. The woman's photo has been touched up in her hair where thin lines to accent her hair have been drawn in as an accent. The frogs or fasteners of her Cheongsam dress have also been outlined to accent their definition. CONDITION: The woman's photo has some gray spots at her lower chest line in the bottom are of the photo. This is somewhat feint and not exceptionally bad otherwise there are 2 tiny white spots at the left in the background. The lower edge of the photo was roughly cut and then later likely matted out by the photographer. These defects do not significantly detract from the overall image which is clear sharp and otherwise without any major defects. Overall a strong solid image clear sharp and bright. The man's photo has a narrow water spot at the background just adjacent to his left temple a few white spots on the negative which transferred to the photograph common to the early period of this photograph. There is a small divot just below his chin in the background. Otherwise the photograph is with out any large defects. There is an interesting fingerprint in the left background just above his shoulder obviously place there by the photographer. A small discoloration is found on the area just above his right temple which again appears to be in the negative. Overall a strong solid image clear sharp and bright. It is out belief that the photographs were not taken on the same day at the same photographer's studio. The man's photograph appears to be an earlier work with a different photographic process. The woman's looks like it was taken a few years later. We believe the couple were married and represented the late ancestors of a Hong Kong family. PROVENANCE: The set was purchased in Hong Kong in 1959 and were framed as matching set. . unknown
