With 148 silver gelatin silver print & albumen photos sized from 2 x 2.5 in. up to 4 x 5.5 in. w/ the majority sized approx. 3.5 x 4.5 in. many w/ pen or pencil annotations in lower margins or w/in the images some dated most mounted or tipped in either w/ gray corners or black corners. Limp textured black cloth post-binder brass screw-posts at gutter margin occasional edgewear minor tears to a couple images wear & rubbing to spine of covers still VG exemplar. This intriguing photo album documents the travel through China during the Xinhai Revolution by a well-to-do oil merchant and family. The album opens with shots in and around the Shanxi Province which after the fall of the Qing Dynasty became the earliest bases for the Communist Party and peasants recruited to join the People’s Revolution. The photos show a typical Chinese Inn the stone bridge leading into the Shanxi Province armed guards in the party with all holding weapons casualties being carried away from the battlefields as well as Chinese street beggars. Several photos show the crossing of the Yellow River the stark landscape water tower as well as battlefield casualties one with dogs dragging around a corpse’s head while another shows Chinese prisoners chained to stakes with their heads covered in wicker baskets. Also shown are the buildings and workers for the Yang Chang Yanchang Oil Company originally founded in 1905 with oil derricks and drilling equipment while still another includes the written caption “Ahlo’s Coal Mine near Peking.†Also included are images of the group traveling on the Marie B. cabin cruiser out of Shanghai Chinese Junks on the Yangtze River in the harbor Chinese peddlers river scenes iconic bridges and temples. There are several views of Beijing the American Legation building in Beijing the city wall Canal Street and a few of the famed ancient observatory followed by views of the group leaving on the SS Mongolia in 1913 and traveling to Japan and views of coaling the ship in Nagasaki Japan. At the time the SS Mongolia was a 13369 ton passenger and cargo liner for the Pacific Mail Steamship Co. later for the US Navy and later as the President Fillmore for the Dollar Line. Many of the images in Japan show workers in bronze women weaving silk farming hauling wood and creating elaborate lacquer ware. [n.p.], hardcover

The striking images by Mennie portray Chinese temples palaces peddlers laborers ancient walled cities Chinese shops and Chinese eating at outdoor tables at the beginning of the 20th century. Mennie 1875/6-1941 trained as a chemist and worked as an amateur photographer in Scotland. He initially began working in China as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co. in Beijing later working for the Mactavish Photo Shop in Shanghai as one of the first producers in China of picture postcards. He later joined the A.S. Watson & Co. -- chemists druggists wine spirits & cigar Merchants who also dealt in all kinds of photographic chemicals and equipment later becoming their managing director the firm still flourishes to this day as one of the largest health and beauty retailers in the world. Mennie contributed photographic images for numerous works and published several of his own images. He died in the Japanese Lungwha internment camp near Shanghai in 1941. Movie poster for the 1955 film the English version of an Indian film "Presented by Lloyd Friedgen and Rajkamal Kalamandir Studio" which was produced at the height of anti-Communism in the West. An Indian doctor aids a band of anti-Communist guerillas in China and works against the development of germ warfare by Communist doctors. The huge hypodermic needle being wielded in the image at lower right of the poster hints at the tenor of the movie: "Swooping down from the North they created a brutal reign of terror! A scarce and handsome pictorial map of the inner city of Peiping Peking/Beijing by John Kirk Sewall showing Tartar City Chinese City and the Forbidden City with people and animals in silhouette and temples theaters etc in bright colors. The WorldCat entry for this map with holdings at three libraries notes "The map is decorated with small illustrations of landmark buildings and black silhouettes of workers pedestrians and animals. Essentially a tourist map since it includes sightseeing attractions rail station hotels etc. It also depicts the Legation Quarter.Imprint date based on the first use of Peiping in 1928 and the representation of the German Legation by the black red and gold Reichsbanner flag which was banned in 1933." Damage and some loss to top of upper left panel likely from insect damage the paper surface has been thinned; some abrasive action to lower left panel but only visible as a few small holes on the map side. The printing is slightly offset. Displays very well. This is one of the two maps published in a color pictorial paper sleeve by Science Press and distributed by Lynns Book Store 128 Morrison St Peiping the other map in that set being a map of Peiping. It is a diagrammatic bird's eye style view of Peiping Beijing and environs with pictographs of famous places such as the Temple of Heaven the Lama Temple T'and Shan Hot Springs Shuang Ho Sheng Brewery Yenching University Tsing Hua University the Temple of Azure Clouds etc. The new Commercial Air Field major roads and railway lines are marked. Each building is identified in multiple languages beneath a 10 x 19 inch artist rendering of the site. This high quality calendar is in excellent clean condition. No date. 1738. TWO SHEETS of copper plate engraved maps approximately 14 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches on sheets 16 x 10 inches. Light toning slight wave to paper tiny "pimple" in paper at upper right of first image overall very good condition. One sheet shows plans of the Tyen-tang temple and the Ti-tang temple; the other sheet shows a plan of the Ti vang myau or Hall of Ceremony and a plan of the Que tse Kyeu or Hall of Ceremony. Beneath these two latter plans are extensive explanations. These sheets are from Du Halde's "A description of the empire of China and Chinese-Tartary: together with the kingdoms of Korea and Tibet: containing the geography and history natural as well as civil of those countries" published in London in 1738. Originally published in French in 1735 this was an encyclopedic compendium by Jesuit priest Jean Baptiste Du Halde of the written accounts of some 27 Jesuits in China documenting the history and customs of the country. . unknown
