Shanghai: Reprinted from the "North-China Herald and Supreme Court and Consular Gazette" 1884. Often considered the oldest newspaper in world history First edition. The mouthpiece of the Qing court the Peking Gazette was the "most important public source of information about the workings of the late Qing state. Through the gazette 'one is able to feel the pulse of the whole empire' wrote Jehu Lewis Shuck the first Baptist missionary to China" Harris p. 3. From the Macartney embassy onwards foreign missionaries merchants and diplomats relied on the Gazette as an indispensable source of information. Translations of articles regularly appeared in English-language newspapers journals and reports as well as in annual compilation volumes. The wide-ranging index for this instalment includes references for example to opium dens in the Forbidden City silk and porcelain manufacturing extortion riots and river management. Octavo. NOTE: the first half of this volume was used as a scrapbook and has at least 32 engravings of scenes military men and literary person glued to the pages not affecting the map which is bound in place. <br/><br/>This map is a variant of the original map which appeared in the third volume of THE CHINESE REPOSITORY. That map measures 14 1/4 x 18 1/2 inches and has titles in Chinese ideograms and in English. THIS MAP has names in English or the English equivalent of the Chinese identifications. This map accompanies an article "MIscellany" with sub-title " Canton and the River Tigris " another section of which is "The Physical and Moral evils inflicted on the Chinese by a Christian people for the love of gain". More of the entry discusses at length the problems of opium as previously described in the Calcutta Christian Observer with supporting remarks. Rev. Bridgman was the editor of THE CHINESE REPOSITORY. He was the first American Protestant Christian missionary sent to China and America's first Sinologist. NOTE: This volume also includes missionary reports by Rev. ALS Letter from Canton China to friend at Norwich CT
1889. Ephemera. A letter written by Charles H. Smith 156 Yah Yah St. Canton to William S. Gaylord 119 Williams St. Norwich CT dated May 16 1889. He stayed with George Thompson a tea merchant. "Of all the cities I have seen Canton is the most interesting fascinating and startling." The 4pp letter describes the city wall the residence of the Tartar General and the consulates of the great European powers; the "perfect maze of narrow streets.from five to eight feet wide" the streets paved with large slabs of marble the ancient gates and much on the garrison of 2100 constables the thirty-six wards they guard and methods of intimidation for burglars. He also describes a visit to a "Cat and Dog Restaurant" and extolling "Birds nest soup." Bifold 4 3/8 x 6 3/4". A couple small smudges otherwise very good condition. unknown
