Fiuczynski, Andrea (u.a.):
Luminous Colours: Treasures from the Shorenstein Collection. Hong Kong. (Ausstellung / Auktion). Christie's. Wednesday 1 December 2010.
Gutes Exemplar; Einband stw. leicht berieben. - Englisch. - The Chinese works of art in the collection of Walter and Phyllis Shorenstein are spectacular in their beauty, their technical excellence and their historical importance. They include examples of Chinese glass, imperial porcelain and jade of particular distinction. The Shorenstein's impressively comprehensive collection of glass is one of the most admired and important in America. … One of the beneficiaries of their financial and personal support was the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Phyllis Shorenstein was one of the founders of the museum, which opened in Golden Gate Park in 1966, serving as a board member for many years, and being a commissioner right up to the time of her death m 1994. Over a 20-year period the Shorenstein family donated many fine examples of art from China,Japan, Korea, India, and other Asian countries, to the museum. In recognition of all the Shorensteins had done for the Asian Art Museum, m May 1994 one of its galleries was named in honour of the family … Phyllis Shorenstein was a passionate collector of Chinese glass, and amassed a superb collection, which provides a spectacular visual history of Chinese glass from the Han dynasty to the Qing dynasty. The collection includes some very-interesting early pieces of Chinese glass, including a Han dynasty translucent aqua glass cup (lot 2902), which represents a rare early Chinese example ot blown glass. However, it was the glass from the Qing dynasty which particularly appealed to the Shorensteins. and there are some exceptional pieces in their collection. They are exceptional for the clarity and brilliance of their colours, the skill inherent in their manufacture, and innovation of their designs. … One vessel which provides an interesting link with other, earlier, materials, is a small 1 Nth century bluish-green tripod censer (lot 2919). The censer combines the 13 th century Longquan ceramic glazes. The Shorenstein Collection includes a number of beautiful vessels decorated in the 'cameo' style, which became popular in the i8th century. One which exhibits particular refinement is an opaque white vase with a red overlay that has been carved to produce a charming; design of birds perching on and flying above blossoming primus branches (lot 2926). Around the lower part ot the vase ornamental rocks, bamboo, chrysanthemums, peonies and orchids are scattered over the ground. The individual elements ot the design have been kept small, and in places the upper red glass has been reduced to a very thin layer suggesting the translucency of the flower petals, creating an overall impression of graceful delicacy. … (Vorwort) // INHALT : Auction Information ----- International Antiquities, Asian Art and African and Oceanic Art Departments ----- Specialists and Services for this Auction ----- Property for Sale ----- Chronology of China ----- Important Notices and Explanation of Cataloguing Practice ----- Buying at Christie's ----- Conditions of Sale ----- Worldwide Salerooms and Offices ----- Christie's Specialist Departments and Services ----- Absentee Bids Form ----- Bidder Registration Form ----- Catalogue Subscriptions Form ----- Christie's Hong Kong Limited.

FLEMING (George)
Travels on Horseback in Mantchu Tartary: Being a Summer's Ride Beyond the Great Wall of China.
First edition, large 8vo, xvi, 579, [3]pp., coloured frontispiece, fold-out map, numerous illustrs., in the text, small neat library stamp to blank margin of frontis., and title, rebound in quarter calf, blind-stamp library call number to spine, overall a very good copy. First edition of this enchanting account of the travels of George Fleming (1833-1901) in the far north of China. Fleming began his epic journey in Tien-tsin, where he was stationed as an army doctor at a British military garrison; there he was granted special permission to travel almost 700 miles as far as Moukden and to Manchu Tartary, the birth place of the Manchu dynasty. Flemings route took him through many regions that had been inaccessible to western travellers until the Treaty of Tien-tsin (1858-1859). His vivid account describes the people and customs he met; the landscape; the climate; the language and dialects; the agricultural practices of the various regions; and the struggles and hardships he faced during his journey. Flemings work is a monument of Victorian travel literature and an important source in understanding Victorian perceptions of China and of Chinese culture.

Fogel, Joshua A
Nakae Ushikichi in China. The Mourning of Spirit (= Harvard East Asian Monographs, No. 139).
Cambridge, Mass. and London, Harvard University Press, 1989. xv, 313 S., 3 Blatt. Orig.-Leinenband mit Schutzumschlag. "In 1914, Nakae Ushikichi (1889-1942), gifted son of the famous Nakae Chomin (1847-1901) and graduate of Tokyo University's Faculty of Law, left behind the opportunities open to him in Japan and went to China. He worked briefly for the South Manchurian Railway and then in the Yüan Shih-k'ai government, but a personal crisis in 1919 turned him suddenly to a life of rigorous scholarship and social criticism. He spent most of his adult life in Peking, published little, deeply influenced a few key compatriots, and became a posthumous hero to a generation of postwar Japanese intellectuals. In the first full-length study in English of the life and thought of Nakae Ushikichi, Joshua A. Fogel tells the strange story of this cocky, indolent carouser who became a disciplined scholar and passionate advocate of the worth of all humanity. Fogel examines Nakae's Sinological work in the context of his wide reading in German philosophy, Western historiography, and classical Chinese sources. He also translates Nakae's wartime diary" (Publisher's description). Mit kleinem chinesischem Stempel, sonst schönes, gut erhaltenes Exemplar mit nur leichten Gebrauchsspuren.

Politcs and Sinology. The Case of Naito Konan (1866-1934) (= Harvard East Asian Monographs, No. 114).
Cambridge, Mass. and London, Harvard University Press, 1984. xxiv, 420 S., 3 Blatt. Orig.-Pappband. "Naito Konan's periodization of Chinese history is responsible for shaping the twentieth-century Western view of China. Naito was a journalist in the vibrant Meiji press for twenty years, during which he became recognized as Japan's leading Sinologist. He then assumed a chair in China Studies at Kyoto University, where he taught for twenty years, remaining all the while a prolific writer on public affairs. Joshua Fogel's biography treats Naito holistically, pointing up the intricate connections between his Sinological and political interests" (Publisher's description). Fokkema Douwe
Perfect Worlds: Utopian Fiction in China and the West
8vo, br. ed.448pp. Perfect Worlds is an extensive, comparative study of utopian narratives in both the East and the West. Douwe Fokkema provides an elegant argument about the human impulse to imagine new and better worlds, astutely observing that the utopian imagination thrives in the context of secularization. Fokkema also tracks the rise of dystopian narratives, invoking authors as diverse as Margaret Atwood and Lao She, and provides a cogent evaluation of the role of imagined worlds in both Chinese and Euro-American fiction. A shrewd comparison of cultures, as well as a vivid account of cross-cultural influence, this volume is a welcome addition to the scholarly discourse on utopias. Perfect Worlds offers an extensive historical analysis of utopian narratives in the Chinese and Euro-American traditions. This comparative study discusses, among other things, More?s criticism of Plato, the European orientalist search for utopia in China, Wells?s Modern Utopia and his talk with Stalin, Chinese writers constructing their Confucianist utopia, traces of Daoism in Mao Zedong?s utopianism and politics and finally the rise of dystopian writing ? a negative expression of the utopian impulse ? in Europe and America as well as in China.

One Child: The Story of China's Most Radical Experiment
8vo, Very Good: a copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. For over three decades, China exercised unprecedented control over the reproductive habits of its billion citizens. Now, with its economy faltering just as it seemed poised to become the largest in the world, the Chinese government has brought an end to its one-child policy. It may once have seemed a shortcut to riches, but it has had a profound effect on society in modern China. Combining personal portraits of families affected by the policy with a nuanced account of China s descent towards economic and societal turmoil, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mei Fong reveals the true cost of this most controversial of policies. Drawing on eight years spent documenting its repercussions, she reveals a dystopian legacy of second children refused documentation by the state, only children supporting their parents and grandparents, and villages filled with ineligible bachelors. An exceptional piece of on-the-ground journalism, One Child humanizes the policy that defined China and warns that the ill-effects of its legacy will be felt across the globe
