Empires and Exchanges in Eurasian Late Antiquity: Rome, China, Iran, and the Steppe, ca. 250–750
8vo, br.ed. pp.544. Empires and Exchanges in Eurasian Late Antiquity offers an integrated picture of Rome, China, Iran, and the Steppes during a formative period of world history. In the half millennium between 250 and 750 CE, settled empires underwent deep structural changes, while various nomadic peoples of the steppes (Huns, Avars, Turks, and others) experienced significant interactions and movements that changed their societies, cultures, and economies. This was a transformational era, a time when Roman, Persian, and Chinese monarchs were mutually aware of court practices, and when Christians and Buddhists criss-crossed the Eurasian lands together with merchants and armies. It was a time of greater circulation of ideas as well as material goods. This volume provides a conceptual frame for locating these developments in the same space and time. Without arguing for uniformity, it illuminates the interconnections and networks that tied countless local cultural expressions to far-reaching inter-regional ones.

Di Cosmo Nicola and Don J. Wyatt
Political Frontiers, Ethnic Boundaries and Human Geographies in Chinese History
8vo, br. ed. Boundaries - demanding physical space, enclosing political entities, and distinguishing social or ethnic groups - constitute an essential aspect of historical investigation. It is especially with regard to disciplinary pluralism and historical breadth that this book most clearly departs and distinguishes itself from other works on Chinese boundaries and ethnicity. In addition to history, the disciplines represented in this book include anthropology (particularly ethnography), religion, art history, and literary studies. Each of the authors focuses on a distinct period, beginning with the Zhou dynasty (c. 1100 BCE) and ending with the early centuries after the Manchu conquest (c. CE 1800) - resulting in a chronological sweep of nearly three millennia.

The Cambridge History of Inner Asia . The Cinggisid Age
8vo, hardcover in dj, volume centres on the history and legacy of the Mongol World Empire founded by Chinggis Khan and his sons, including its impact upon the modern world. An international team of scholars examines the political and cultural history of the Mongol empire, its Chinggisid successor states, and the non-Chinggisid dynasties that came to dominate Inner Asia in its wake. Geographically, it focuses on the continental region from East Asia to Eastern Europe. Beginning in the twelfth century, the volume moves through to the establishment of Chinese and Russian political hegemony in Inner Asia from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Contributors use recent research and new approaches that have revitalized Inner Asian studies to highlight the world-historical importance of the regimes and states formed during and after the Mongol conquest. Their conclusions testify to the importance of a region whose modern fate has been overshadowed by Russia and China.

Diakonoff, I. M. & Alexander Kirjanov (Tr. )
EARLY ANTIQUITY
Light shelfwear to book. Very light foxing to top of textblock. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 1.36 x 9.26 x 6.38 Inches; 486 pages; The internationally renowned Assyriologist and linguist I. M. Diakonoff has gathered the work of Soviet historians in this survey of the earliest history of the ancient Near East, Central Asia, India, and China. Diakonoff and his colleagues, nearly all working within the general Marxist historiographic tradition, offer a comprehensive, accessible synthesis of historical knowledge from the beginnings of agriculture through the advent of the Iron Age and the Greek colonization in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea areas. Besides discussing features of Soviet historical scholarship of the ancient world, the essays treat the history of early Mesopotamia and the course of Pharaonic Egyptian civilization and developments in ancient India and China from the Bronze Age into the first millennium B. C. Additional chapters are concerned with the early history of Syria, Phoenicia, and Palestine, the Hittite civilization, the Creto-Mycenaean world, Homeric Greece, and the Phoenician and Greek colonization. This volume offers a unified perspective on early antiquity, focusing on the economic and social relations of production. Of immense value to specialists, the book will also appeal to general readers. I. M. Diakonoff is a senior research scholar of ancient history at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Leningrad Academy of Sciences.

In -8°, pp, 88, cartonato, tagli rossi. This is a very early source written by Christian on Muslims in China proper. The almost non-judgmental treatment of Islam is particularly interesting, although it must be noted that the text was written befor the Jesuit-Muslim conflicts fo the later part of the 16th century, so it must be possible to assume that relations at this time were fairly amicable. [...] The descriptions of Muslim life in China are fairly extensive in comparison with other texts of the early 17th century although, like its counterparts, the text focuses more on other religions such as Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and Judaism”. (Thomas Davies, John Chesworth, “Christian-Muslim Relations. A Bibliographical History”, 2012, vol. 11, p. 294. Diego de Pantoja o Diego Pantoja (Valdemoro 1571 – Macao 1618) era un gesuita e missionario portoghese in Cina, noto per aver accompagnato Matteo Ricci a Pechino, dove Diego avrebbe lavorato come astronomo, geografo e musicista. Nel 1617 fu processato come nemico degli astronomi cinesi (aveva apportato alcune correzioni al calendario) ed espulso dalla Cina. Published before in Spanish, this long letter, here in its first Italian edition, is valued as remarkable not only about early contacts between Christian Europe and China, but also about the relationship between Catholic religion and Muslim one: “This is a very early source written by Christian on Muslims in China proper. 11, p. 294. Diego De Pantoja (1571-1618) was a portuguese jesuit and missionary in China, known for getting along Matteo Ricci to Beijing, where Diego was an astronomer, a geographer and a musician. He purpoused some changes to Chinese calendar, and in 1617 was prosecuted and banished from China.

Dikotter, Frank
Mao's Great Famine: The History of China's Most Devastating Catastrophe, 1958-62
br. ed. An unprecedented, groundbreaking history of China`s Great Famine that recasts the era of Mao Zedong and the history of the People`s Republic of China. Between 1958 and 1962, China descended into hell. Mao Zedong threw his country into a frenzy with the Great Leap Forward, an attempt to catch up and overtake Britain in less than 15 years. The experiment ended in the greatest catastrophe the country had ever known, destroying tens of millions of lives. So opens Frank Dikötter`s astonishing, riveting, magnificently detailed chronicle of an era in Chinese history much speculated about but never before fully documented because access to Communist Party archives has long been restricted to all but the most trusted historians. A new archive law has opened up thousands of central and provincial documents that fundamentally change the way one can study the Maoist era. Dikötter makes clear, as nobody has before, that far from being the program that would lift the country among the world`s superpowers and prove the power of communism, as Mao imagined, the Great Leap Forward transformed the country in the other direction. It became the site not only of one of the most deadly mass killings of human history, as at least 45 million people were worked, starved or? beaten to death, but also the greatest demolition of real estate in human history, as up to a third of all housing was turned into rubble. The experiment was a catastrophe for the natural world as well, as the land was savaged in the maniacal pursuit of steel and other industrial accomplishments. In a powerful meshing of exhaustive research and narrative drive, Dikötter for the first time links up what happened in the corridors of power?the vicious backstabbing and bullying tactics that took place among party leaders?with the everyday experiences of ordinary people, giving voice to the dead and disenfranchised. His magisterial account recasts the history of the People`s Republic of China. Printed Pages: 448

Dikötter, Frank
Crime, Punishment, and the Prison in Modern China, 1895-1949. With 42 illustrations.
New York, Columbia University Press, 2002. xvi, 441 S. Orig.-Leinenband mit Schutzumschlag. "An examination of the enormous changes in Chinese society in the first half of the 20th century through the lens of the Chinese prison system. More than a simple history of prison rules or penal administration, the text offers a social and cultural analysis of the Chinese prison system that explores the profound effects and lasting repercussions of superimposing Western-derived models of repentance and rehabilitation on traditional categories of crime and punishment. Frank Dikotter explores penal reform as a radical modern tool to achieve a traditional Chinese vision of social cohesion and the rule of virtue. He also offers insights into daily life behind bars. A world of petty villains, abusive guards, ambitious wardens and idealist reformers is revealed, giving flesh and bone to the more general story of the prison in China. Based on research and different sources, this is a cultural history of crime and of the prison, opening a window into a little-known aspect of late-19th- and early-20th-century China" (Publisher's description).
