It is an excellent reference for collectors, easy to use, and provides a broad exposure to books in any given subject. The collection is based on the collection of Thomas Hunt, a merchant who gained his fortune in China during the middle of the 19th century. A lifelong collector, Hunt gave his collection to the Essex Institute, where it is currently housed. The Library contains about 4000 volumes. It was with the purpose of increasing the library's usefulness to scholars that the current catalog was compiled. Subjects are Chinese in America, Jews in China, Buddhism, folklore, secret societies, and dozens of others.‎

‎FLEMING (George)‎

‎Travels on Horseback in Mantchu Tartary: Being a Summer's Ride Beyond the Great Wall of China.‎

‎First edition, large 8vo, xvi, 579, [3]pp., coloured frontispiece, fold-out map, numerous illustrs., in the text, small neat library stamp to blank margin of frontis., and title, rebound in quarter calf, blind-stamp library call number to spine, overall a very good copy. First edition of this enchanting account of the travels of George Fleming (1833-1901) in the far north of China. Fleming began his epic journey in Tien-tsin, where he was stationed as an army doctor at a British military garrison; there he was granted special permission to travel almost 700 miles as far as Moukden and to Manchu Tartary, the birth place of the Manchu dynasty. Flemings route took him through many regions that had been inaccessible to western travellers until the Treaty of Tien-tsin (1858-1859). His vivid account describes the people and customs he met; the landscape; the climate; the language and dialects; the agricultural practices of the various regions; and the struggles and hardships he faced during his journey. Flemings work is a monument of Victorian travel literature and an important source in understanding Victorian perceptions of China and of Chinese culture.‎

‎MINTONS TILES TRADE CATALOGUE.‎

‎Mintons Tiles. Selected Patterns of Enamelled Tiles for Walls, Hearths, Fire Places, Furniture, Flower Boxes, &c., Reduced to a scale of 1? inch to a foot.‎

‎Folio (325 x 250 mm), [8]pp., followed 30 numbered chromolithographed plates and one further "extra sheet" with 10 mounted albumen photographs, a couple of sheets with slight fraying to blank fore-edge, loose in publisher's printed boards, worn, re-backed with tape. Minton's Ltd, was a major ceramics manufacturing company, originated with Thomas Minton (1765-1836) the founder of "Thomas Minton and Sons", who established his pottery factory in Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, England, in 1793, producing earthenware. Herbert Minton began experimenting making encaustic tiles in 1828 in addition to the established Mintons pottery and china business, and produced their first catalogue of 62 designs in 1835. "The Tiles in this book are, with the exception of those shown on Sheet 16, which are printed patterns, and on the extra Sheet of Photographs, all Enamelled by a Patent process, know as "Reynold's process," which was adapted in 1848 by the late Mr. Herbert Minton, and has ever since been carried on at Mintons (Limited) China Works... The process for the decoration of Tiles was early favoured by the late Mr. A. Welby Pugin, "the great restorer of Gothic Arts," in the Houses of Parliament and in many other places, and the patterns in that style of ornament in this book are all from his hand. Since the days of Pugin the use of these enamelled Tiles for decorative purposes has greatly increased, and there are now few houses without some examples...".‎
