Mathews, Jay; Mathews, Linda
One Billion: A China Chronicle
25 cm. From John K. Fairbank - The New York Review of Books The sympathetic yet critical balance of attitude that distinguishes this book no doubt reflects the authors' experience living together in China. . . .{When they} married, and had two children, they mixed collaboration and competition. By living in China as a family they were in an unusual position to explore nooks and crannies of the society around them. . . . {The Mathews's} book, which is really a journalists' effort (the best I know of) . . . captures that elusive but ubiquitous entity known as 'Chinese culture' or what makes theChinese tick. From Donald Klein - The Christian Science Monitor (Eastern edition) The Mathewses bring solid credentials to their journalistic tasks and to this new book on life in China today. For example, they often cite research that is usually known only to China-scholars. Yet, these findings are frequently tested and humanized by the Mathewses' reporting. . . . Much of the book deals with the great struggle to preserve the family (not the rights of the individual as in the West) against the encroachments of the seemingly all-powerfulstate. The reader comes away with a renewed respect for the dogged tenacity of the family structure. . . . 'One Billion' contains an unexpected bonus. The Mathewses were the first American correspondents to have young children in China, and thus the book is sprinkled with striking observations about childrenthat a childless journalist might never have noticed. China is too importantto be left to the specialists. Books such as 'One Billion'--thoughtful and very well written--deserve a wide audience. From Judith K. Davison - The New York Times Book Review Conscientious organization saves 'One Billion' from chaos, but just barely. The authors start with the first principles of Chinese life--primacy of human feelings, ties to family and village, connections to the past, pride in being Chinese. Then they 'wrap together . . . the weary contrasts between city and country life. . . . They are at their best describing the central fact of life in China--population pressure--and examining its consequences (underemployment, low productivity, inadequate housing, family planning, which extends tosterilization and abortion). The farther afield they range, the more confusing their account becomes. 'One Billion' is the authors' testament to 'the experience of a lifetime,' but the reader would have been more satisfied with less. ISBN: 039450982X

Cheng Naishan
The Piano Tuner
Trade Paperback. Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Rare book. Translated by Britten Dean. Novel written by "one of the most popular woman writers in the People's Republic today". Few authors give a stronger feeling of what life is like in modern urban China than Cheng Naishan. Her stories set in Shanghai, contain perceptive, compassionate, and sometimes bitingly satirical portraits of China's people. She also writes frankly of the controversial issues of modern Chinese society: women's rights, continuing divisions of social class, the pain and horror of the Cultural Revolution, the invasion of Western ideas and the way to retain the best features of socialism. Her fiction is a blend of the old and the new, where burned-out revolutionaries and the new breed of "Chinese yuppies" live in a sometimes uneasy truce, while the older generation remains perplexed by both. That she is the only major writer in China who is a convert to Christianity adds an unusual dimension to her work. She reveals a far more sophisticated view of China than commonly seen in the Western media. The rigid cold war distinctions of capitalism and communism do not apply here. This is modern China, and there is no simple way to describe it, but in Cheng Naishan's stories we can feel it. 176 pages.

Salzman Mark
The Soloist
.Hardcover. First Edition. First Printing. 284 pages. The author's second novel. "The difficulties encountered by talented children are dispassionately chronicled in this unusual story about a musical prodigy who as an adult must come to terms with his own mediocrity. When Reinhart Sundheimer's prodigious talent as a world-renowned cellist suddenly and inexplicably deserts him at age 18, he is bereft for he knows no other life than that of the concert stage and is accustomed to adulation. As a college professor who has never learned social skills, he is aloof from his colleagues and spends his spare time practicing in the vain hope that his genius will return. Then, in one event-filled week, the outside world invades his insular environment. First, he is called to jury duty and second, he agrees to give cello lessons to a 12-year-old prodigy. Interacting with other jurors during deliberations on a brutal murder case and reacting to the unpredictability of his student require emotional resources that he never knew he possessed. Both experiences result in personal insight that allows him to accept his limitations as a musician and gives him the courage to broaden his horizons as a human being" (Publisher's). ISBN 0394570103.
