‎China Late 19th or early 20th century. 34 scenes on paper each featuring several figures in traditional dress disporting themselves amid landscapes and in a few instances houses all done by the same artist. Each picture is a separate scene; subjects include fishing visiting boating farming wrestling courting harvesting rice and hunting--a particularly effective image shows a tiger hunt and several scenes include wild and domestic animals. 1 vols. Images measure 8-3/4 x 7 inches plus margins bringing the overall page size to 11 x 8 inches. The mounted leaves are linked in the Oriental accordion fashion and contained within two substantial wood covers. Fine condition. 34 scenes on paper each featuring several figures in traditional dress disporting themselves amid landscapes and in a few instances houses all done by the same artist. Each picture is a separate scene; subjects include fishing visiting boating farming wrestling courting harvesting rice and hunting--a particularly effective image shows a tiger hunt and several scenes include wild and domestic animals. 1 vols. Binding very worn. Hardbound. The author Isaac W. Wiley was a pastor medical and educational missionary and influential bishop of the former Methodist Episcopal Church. Wiley College founded in 1873 by the Freemen's Aid Society to educate newly freed slaves was named for him. He served as a missionary for some years in China and returned to organize missionary activity in the Far East. This account of his travels makes interesting reading. He visited and describes many places customs sights religions. In China: Shanghai; Peking; Kiukiang; Foochow; Hong Kong; Canton - in Japan: Yokohama; Nagasaki; Tokio Tokyo; among other places. The author Lieutenant A.W. Habersham of the US Navy was an officer on the North Pacific Surveying and Exploring Expedition. This account of the expedition is a fascinating and pleasing read and full of detail of the people their customs and the sights seen. Name of prior owner dated 1925 Chefoo and a tipped in letter to her - handwritten by J.L. Smith of the H.B.M Consulate Chefoo on the rear of the frontis. Rebacked in quarter leather presumably by the Chefoo club with their name printed on the lower spine fading. Head & tail of spine starting boards decorated and stamped in gilt. Top edge gilt. A discard label on the front paste-down from the Chefoo Club Library dated 1925. Some age toning but a good firm copy. Two page APO 627 Army Post Office 627 Kunming China typescript English language document 34 x 22.5cm dated May 10th 1945 together with a small news leaflet 14 x 11cm dated 5 days earlier with the same text in Chinese printed on both sides. The size of the Chinese leaflet suggests it was designed to be dropped from aircraft over Occupied China. The feature article is titled "Hitler is dead" in English and in Chinese 希特勒死了! The other news: Mussolini Executed After Trial by People's Tribunal; Rangoon Freed of Japanese and San Francisco Conference in Session. <br> <br>The English language document appears to have been written as the file copy to accompany the Chinese news release/newsletter. The information at the top of the first page gives details of the Target audience: Occupied China as well as Leaflet ident cation number - "OWI/CN-109"; Language - "Chinese"; Time: "Immediately" and Purpose: "To report the latest developments in the European and Pacific theatres of war to the Chinese in Occupied territory and give them news of the progress of the San Francisco Conference". <br> <br>A little creasing pin holes and tiny tears at edges of the evenly browned English language document the Chinese leaflet lightly foxed. Printed colour map on a single newspaper leaf 53 x 40.7 cm; 59.8 x 45 cm sheet inset text box marginal browning and at the folds but remarkably bright in very good condition. WWII map of China showing most of China Indo-China Thailand and Korea with territory captured and controlled by Japan shaded in orange and red published by the Chicago Daily Tribune barely six weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbour. The text on the map reads "Since 1937 China has been at war with Japan. Lacking many essentials of war the Chinese nevertheless have managed to maintain a front against the aggressors. China's principal life line is the Burma road shown on the map which starts at Lashio Burma and extends to Kunming Yunnan province where it links with connections to Chunking the present Chinese capital". <br> <br>Based on a Rand McNally map the Tribune briskly got to work issuing maps for readers showing the beginnings of the war with Japan. ‎<p><em>Cup saucer and side plate; white china has strikingly clean straight lines and is rimmed in dark green with a green handle to the cup each piece carries the motif designed by Sylvia Pankhurst of the 'angel of freedom' blowing her trumpet and flying the banner of 'Freedom in the background are the initials 'WSPU' set against dark prison bars surrounded by the thistle shamrock and rose and dangling chains; the cup has one minor hairline crack otherwise all pieces are in fine condition.</em></p><p>Rare survival of an original Suffragette cup saucer and side plate complete with the 'Angel of Freedom' designed by Sylvia Pankhurst. Initially for use in the refreshment room of the Prince's Skating Rink Exhibition and then sold in aid of funds.</p><p>The Women's Exhibition of 1909 all but forgotten today was a tipping point in women's struggle for equal rights. The event was open to both sexes and cleverly calculated to show men that suffragettes were not the dangerous 'shrieking sisterhood' they were painted but were in fact the wives mothers and sisters they knew women safely interested in the same female pursuits they always had been women dedicated to creating beautiful things not destroying them.</p><p>'The winged angel logo was repeated on almost all promotional material. It was especially striking on the elegant white tea service specially commissioned from a pottery in Staffordshire used in the traditional tea and refreshment room during the exhibition and for sale after the event. Commemorative china was a relatively new idea and this early understanding of branding as a way of advertising was a key element of the exhibition's success making the WSPU one of the first campaign groups to understand the significance of logos' http://annesebba.com/journalism/the-womens-exhibition-of-1909/</p>‎
