MING TAIZU, Emperor of China
Tae MyÅngnyul kanghae or Dae Myeongnyul ganghae 大明律講解 The Great Ming Code Explained
69; 84; 102 folding leaves. 30 parts in three vols. Large 8vo 306 x 202 mm. orig. patterned yellow-brown wrappers new stitching. Korea: final volume with date 1903.

A rare metal movable type edition printed at the Ministry of Justice in Seoul in 1903 using a font cut in 1816. The text was originally compiled in ChosÅn Korea on royal command in ca. 1440. The earliest edition that can be confidently dated was printed by woodblocks in KyÅngju in 1536.

The text explains the descriptions of crimes and punishments contained in the Great Ming Code which was the penal code of the Chinese Ming empire 1368-1644. This book in the form in which we now have it is the result of a series of revisions in the late 14th century. It represents an important moment in Chinese legal history as a kind of legal Renaissance in that it was deliberately modeled on the centuries-old Tang code whereas the preceding Mongol Yuan empire had not had an official Chinese legal code.

The Ming legal code was very influential in East Asia. In Korea the Ming code’s influence can be discerned already in the second half of the 15th century when we see references in the penal section in the official collection of statutes specifying that certain matters should be handled according to the Ming code. Even in the last Korean code issued before the advent of Japanese rule dated 1905 the influence of the Ming code is still discernable.

Our edition of the book belongs to the uncertain period in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the Korean leadership tried to navigate between the surrounding empires and establish the country as an independent state. The laws of Ming China which had collapsed more than two and a half centuries earlier were still being studied by prospective officials in the Korean judiciary on the eve of the Russo-Japanese War which made Korea a Japanese protectorate.

Our edition was printed with metal movable type using the chÅnsaja å…¨å²å— set. This copper font of approximately 20000 characters was cast privately in 1816 by Pak ChonggyÅng 朴宗慶.

Fine and handsome set. A seal states that this set belonged to the collection of the Institute for the Training of Officials for the Judiciary PÅpkwan YangsÅngso 法官養æˆæ‰€ in Seoul founded in 1895 as part of an attempt to modernize the civil service. It was intended as a textbook for the institute’s students.

"At the end of the book is a double leaf of errata a novelty among Korean government publications" Fang The Asami Library 18.45

References

Fang Chaoying. Institute of Current China Studies
Inside China Mainland 149 issues
Taipei: Institute of Current China Studies 1999. Staplebound. Very good. Various sizes mostly small octavo or quarto. 13 issues dated between September 1979 in the inaugural year - possibly the first issue and November of 1981. Then the run jumps to January 1987 Issue 97 and continues through September 1999 Issue 249 lacking only three issues within that run. Though incomplete a very substantial run of this Taiwan-published journal of mainland China. The issues in the spring and early summer of 1989 touch a great deal on the student protests in Tiananmen Square. Well-stocked in libraries we were hard-pressed to find a similarly large group of issues in commerce; nor did we find many single issues either. There is also an index by subject which covers the first 20 years of the magazine. Ex-library with some markings but generally a clean very readable set. Overseas shipping may incur extra charges. [SHANGHAI - ANTIQUE PRINT] (SIMPSON, WILLIAM).
Sketches in China: Paper-Hunt at Shanghai. caption title
London.: The Illustrated London News. April 121873. Full-page engraving 23.8 x 31.2 cm plus caption on a single newspaper leaf sheet a little toned marginal spotting the image in very good condition. The Shanghai Paper Hunt Club was founded in December 1863. The Illustrated London News' "Special Artist" William Simpson in his commentary overleaf notes that "The 67th Regiment who were stationed at Shanghai about ten years ago introduced it at this place. The character of the country here as well as the breed of Tartar ponies seem well suited to the sport." Membership of the Club remained the preserve of male expats until the late 1920s when it was opened to Chinese membership. As is suggested in the engraving whilst the prey was paper rather than foxes the sport could still be brutal for both horse and rider. Simpson brings his skill and experience as a war artist to the observation of the hunt.

William Simpson 1823-1899 Scottish war artist and correspondent joined the 'Illustrated London News' in the 1860s and covered the Abyssinian campaign 1868 Franco-Prussian war Modoc war 1873 and Second Afghan war. He had previously covered the Crimean war on behalf of publishers and lithographers Colnaghi's.

From the Estate of the late collector and scholar Arthur Hacker. .
