‎MATHEWS, FRANCES AYMAR.‎

‎A Little Tragedy at Tien-Tsin.‎

‎New York.: G.W. Dillingham Company. Reprint. c1906. Colour frontispiece 426pp 2 adverts neat pencilled inscription front free endpaper dated 1910spine sunned with light rubbing to head and tail. Very good copy A curious collection of short stories set in China or amongst the Chinese community in the US by American author Frances Aymar Mathews. The story from which the book takes its title was first published in Harper's Monthly. While another journal well known for its coverage of Asian affairs at the time The Overland largely ignored the disasterous fighting deaths looting and destruction going on in China during the Boxer Rebellion Harper's Monthly published this "peculiar story" alongside political essays of the time. Set in Tien-Tsin a city which had suffered terribly this is the story of "an illicit intimacy" between an American writer and a young Chinese housewife which not surprisingly ends in tragedy. A story which strongly reflects the attitudes of its time. Yu-Fang describes it: "This story evokes the colonial trope of "enslaved" Chinese women's liberation through Christianity and heterosexual love while displacing violent colonial encounters into a domestic tragedy of illicit inter-racial intimacy." Cultural Politics of Deviance and Unequal Difference 1890-1910 - Yu-Fang Cho. SUNY. 2013. . G.W. Dillingham Company. unknown‎

‎WOODHEAD, H. G. W.‎

‎The Truth About the Chinese Republic‎

‎London.: Hurst and Blackett. circa1925. Portrait frontispiece 287pp appendix first and last leaves are faintly foxed neat written name of a prior owner on the half-title spine a little sunned but a firm and tight copy. "In the following pages an attempt is made to reveal the facts regarding the more important issues which have arisen between China and the Treaty Powers as a result of the recent disturbances in that country. It seems to be the fashion nowadays in some circles to regard every claim made or right exercised by the foreign Powers in China as "imperialistic" or unreasonable. It does not seem to be generally understood that the so-called "unequal Treaties" constituted the only means at the time at which they were imposed of securing for foreign residents in China reasonable security for their persons their property and their trade. . . . This work was written with no feeling of hostility towards the Chinese among whom the writer is proud to number many close friends. He believes that it is essential that the truth about the more important of China's international problems should be widely known and that no real service would be done to China by ignoring stubborn and irrefutable facts when the question of treaty-revision is seriously taken up. The labour expended upon writing this volume during a brief furlough will be amply rewarded if it contributes to the discussion of China's problems on a basis of reality. It is easy enough for the arm-chair critic or the sentimentalist at home to urge the scrapping of existing Treaties and the relinquishment of the privileges certain foreigners at present enjoy. These people would probably take a very different view if they had lived for any length of time in China and acquired a first-hand knowledge of the actual situation in that country. And I cannot believe that they are doing any real service to China or to their own countrymen by creating the impression that the British and American publics have completely succumbed to Chinese nationalist and Bolshevik propaganda." Flanagan Company Chicago. 166pp Original tan cloth covered boards with a prior owner bookplate on the front pastedown. Written for intermediate and upper grade American schoolchildren the earlier of these two editions of this textbook published in 1900 contains a description of the Boxer rebellion that has been removed from later editions:

" How we have longed to visit this wonderful country! A few months ago such a visit would not have been possible for China was at war with our nation and many of the nations of Europe. Our lives would have been in danger and the journey to China might have been the last we should ever have taken.

You have heard of the Boxers of China who killed many foreigners and also many Christianized Chinese in the late revolution in that country. Do you know who these Boxers are They are members of a secret patriotic society. They love their country and want to prevent it from falling into the possession of foreigners. They believe that these foreigners have come to overthrow their government and to destroy their religion. They are opposed to the ruling family in China who are Manchus. These Manchus came from a territory outside of China Proper and Chinese Boxers have always disliked to have the rulers of their country chosen from Manchuria." There is a particularly gruesome illustration of Boxer heads in cages exposed as a warning to passers-by.

The 1931 edition omits any reference to the Boxers and the illustration described above has also been removed. . Head and tail of spine tender rear inner hinge split but secure corners rubbed and a neat prior owner signature on the front free endpaper dated 3/23/'97. Much better than it sounds this is a very pleasing copy of a scarce item. "The author states that ' the story - though not all fact is not fiction. Its incidents are either real occurrences or like them. The official corruption presented may be less in other localities; yet it is to be feared that it is general and great. The customs described may differ in other parts of China; the author has presented what he knew prevailed in the vicinity of Amoy his home for a time.

The facts regarding the famine were gathered from published reports of missionaries and from statements made by missionaries to the author. At least one of those stated that sixty-three per cent of government appropriations were taken for their own use by mandarins instead of being applied for the relief of suffering.

The Tai Ping Rebellion is of course a matter of history: but the facts relating to the capture of Amoy were obtained from him whose name Rev. J.V.N. Talmage D.D. for more than 40 years a missionary in China appears on the page of dedication." . Congregational Sunday School and Publishing Society hardcover‎

‎WEALE, PUTNAM.‎

‎The Eternal Priestess: A Novel of China Manners.‎

‎London.: Methuen & Co Ltd. 1st UK Edition. 1914. 404pp 31 3 publisher's catalogues Strikingly decorated blue cloth covers lettered in gilt head of spine has a closed tear that has been reinforced small puncture hole to the gutter on the front board prior owner name in pencil on the front free endpaper but a very attractive copy of the first edition. The author states in the prologue that the people living in these pages are not real but they are essential parts of a picture painted to portray facts - that is the impact of the East upon the West the disarray which collisions bring and the ensuing irony.

At first glance this novel may appear unremarkable however it is of considerable interest in the 20th century history of Chinese-European relations as it includes on page 26 what is believed to be the earliest published reference to the infamous sign in Shanghai's Public Garden which purportedly stated "Dogs and Chinese not Admitted". The sign has now been conclusively shown not to have stated this however references to the racist wording still appear to this day and the reporting of its existence has caused and continues to cause a great deal of ill feeling.

Reginald Johnston former tutor to Pu Yi the last emperor of China wrote in a 1927 pamphlet issued by the Tianjin British Committee of Information that the anti-Chinese wording "it is a kind of slander which takes a lot of killing and survives even the most authoritative denials". Shanghai's Dogs and Chinese Not Admitted" Sign: Legend History and Contemporary Symbol - Robert A. Bickers and Jeffrey N. Wasserstrom. The China Quarterly No 142. June 1995.

Putnam Weale was the name under which Bertram Lenox Simpson 1877- 1930 wrote many books about China. Born in England Bertram Simpson followed his father into the Chinese Maritime Customs Service leaving the service in 1901. He wrote a great deal about China in the years that followed and became deeply involved in Chinese politics. He was murdered in 1930 and it seems quite likely that his murder was of a political nature though neither motive nor killer was ever found. . Methuen & Co Ltd. hardcover‎
