Textured maroon-coloured cloth stapled at gutter margin title in silver on front cover pulling & minor tearing to ffep. at gutter margin minor crease fold to front border minor bumping to corners still VG- copy w/ all images crisp & bright. First and only edition of this surprisingly uncommon photographic souvenir of cruising down the magnificent Three Gorges of the Yangtze River which traditionally sailed from Nanjiang in Jiangsu Province to Chongqing. Originally these cruises were begun by the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911 emperors to inspect their territory cruising along in opulent wooden ships. Despite the first Sino-Japanese War 1895 the 1911 Chinese Revolution and other disruptions by 1915 the Yangtze River had become a popular tourist excursion riding paddle steamers in the early 20th Century. The photographs depict San Yu Tung Shooting a Rapid The Hsintan rapids Granary Gorge Patung Pagoda Kuantukou Wushan Gorge Wind Box Gorge False Gorge Shihpaochai Sampan Man A Casualty depicting a beached steamship and others. China: after 1760.<br /> <BR> <BR> An early edition first printed in 1751 of this selection of poetry by eight famous writers from the Tang 618-907 CE and Northern and Southern Song 960-1279 CE periods. Nominally the collection was made by the Qianlong emperor who was himself a productive poet. If one goes by the number of poems published in Qianlong’s name the emperor “was by far the most prolific poet in Chinese history†he published more than 42000 pieces†Fang Chao-ying “Hung-Li†371. Those poems probably were not all his creation however; the man had an empire to run. Similarly this collection of the poetry of earlier masters probably owed a lot to Grand Secretary Liang Shizheng æ¢è©©æ£ 1697-1763 minister of the Board of Personnel who headed the team of compilers. The woodblock printing reproduces the original calligraphy of the “imperial brush†however.<br /> <BR> <BR> The poets in the collection include Li Bai 701-762 Du Fu 712-770 Bai Juyi 772-846 and Han Yu 768-824 of the Tang as well as Su Shi 1037-1101 and Lu You 1125-1210 of the Song. In the selection of poets and poems the compilers put emphasis on the expression of “filial loyalty†zhongxiao å¿ å a core value for the Confucian monarchy. The styles of the poets were attributed to their lived experience so that the poems became seen as representing their character.<br /> <BR> <BR> The collection has been criticized for focusing on only the biggest names of the Tang and Song periods featuring a selection of only eight poets. Yet the collection was very influential. Its publication preceded the reinstitution of a poetry element in the civil service examinations which retroactively drew attention to the book. Notably this fact was highlighted by the famous statesman and zealous Neo-Confucian Chen Hongmou 1696-1771 then governor of Jiangsu when he requested and received permission to reprint it in the province in 1760 whence this copy; see below. Furthermore in two separate sessions of the civil service examinations during the Qianlong reign — one local examination and one high-level examination — the collection was mentioned in the policy section of the exam. Prospective candidates would have taken note of such mentions and this collection liley ended up on the reading lists of many hopefuls. For a time the collection was prescribed reading for new Hanlin Bachelors at the Qing court and among the reading population writ large it helped establish Su Shi’s and Lu You’s reputations as poets. <br /> <BR> <BR> The book was finished in 1750 and printed the following year. As mentioned above it was reprinted in Jiangsu in 1760. It is possible that this copy belongs to this reprint edition even though the actual printing using the same blocks might be later. The book was reprinted again as a woodblock printing in Zhejiang in 1877. Later copies based on this edition carry the date 1877 after the imperial preface.<br /> <BR> <BR> Very good set preserved in four hantao. Korea: final volume with date 1903.<br /> <BR> <BR> A rare metal movable type edition printed at the Ministry of Justice in Seoul in 1903 using a font cut in 1816. The text was originally compiled in ChosÅn Korea on royal command in ca. 1440. The earliest edition that can be confidently dated was printed by woodblocks in KyÅngju in 1536.<br /> <BR> <BR> The text explains the descriptions of crimes and punishments contained in the Great Ming Code which was the penal code of the Chinese Ming empire 1368-1644. This book in the form in which we now have it is the result of a series of revisions in the late 14th century. It represents an important moment in Chinese legal history as a kind of legal Renaissance in that it was deliberately modeled on the centuries-old Tang code whereas the preceding Mongol Yuan empire had not had an official Chinese legal code. <br /> <BR> <BR> The Ming legal code was very influential in East Asia. In Korea the Ming code’s influence can be discerned already in the second half of the 15th century when we see references in the penal section in the official collection of statutes specifying that certain matters should be handled according to the Ming code. Even in the last Korean code issued before the advent of Japanese rule dated 1905 the influence of the Ming code is still discernable.<br /> <BR> <BR> Our edition of the book belongs to the uncertain period in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the Korean leadership tried to navigate between the surrounding empires and establish the country as an independent state. The laws of Ming China which had collapsed more than two and a half centuries earlier were still being studied by prospective officials in the Korean judiciary on the eve of the Russo-Japanese War which made Korea a Japanese protectorate.<br /> <BR> <BR> Our edition was printed with metal movable type using the chÅnsaja å…¨å²å— set. This copper font of approximately 20000 characters was cast privately in 1816 by Pak ChonggyÅng 朴宗慶.<br /> <BR> <BR> Fine and handsome set. A seal states that this set belonged to the collection of the Institute for the Training of Officials for the Judiciary PÅpkwan YangsÅngso 法官養æˆæ‰€ in Seoul founded in 1895 as part of an attempt to modernize the civil service.
