The city of Beijing had different names during its history: Peiping Beiping Peking Beijing. This is a very complex map with lots of sights human activities animals and historical scenes. The map author Col. Frank Dorn was Commanding General of China Training and Combat Command 1944-1945. He created this Illustrated color map with vignettes of sights animals human activities and historic scenes with labels. ‎A Picture of Commander-in-Chief Dong's Plan to Attack the Western Forces at Yang Village‎

‎China 1899. Colour-printed woodblock. Paper toned. Minor nicks to margin. Very good condition. A Chinese print depicting a battle during the Boxer Rebellion.<br/> <br/>During the Boxer Uprising one of the ways the Boxers spread their message throughout China was through widely circulated pictures known as nianhua or "New Years' pictures." These pictures were often used to illustrate celebrations and festivals but also current events such as military victories. Since there were many people in the countryside who were illiterate the Boxers used various examples of imagery including posters placards and flags to coordinate the mass peasant movement and communicate their message of heroism and resistance against imperial powers. This print gives a close look at the battle at Yangcun. Chinese commanders led by Dong Fuxiang and his Gansu Braves were gathered in an encampment which the Western forces planned to attack. They built a bridge in order to cross the river to the encampment but the Chinese had planted mines which caused the bridge to explode and the Western forces to retreat. The print shows the Chinese forces waving swords as well as the flags of their commanders surrounding the Western soldiers from many sides as they attempt to flee some jumping off the bridge and drowning. "On the 14th day of the 7th month the Western armies arrived at Yang village. Western officers ordered the foot soldiers to build a footbridge across the river to attack the encampment. They were hit by Commander-in-Chief Dong and General Lis secretly placed mines. Our armies attacked from different directions. The Western army was decisively defeated and half of them were killed. A picture by the Daoist of Mount Song" caption translated by the National Archives. The celebratory nature of the illustration shows that it was meant to evoke feelings of patriotism and increase morale amongst the Chinese people and not intended to depict a realistic and historically accurate military scene. The pictorial style combines elements of traditional Chinese woodblock printing with some Western details with the bright colors following the nianhua tradition of the colorful New Year pictures. Only known copy of this engaging account of the month-long cruise of the Lark in the Woosung mudflats in November and December 1935. The party comprised four sportsmen Len Biggs the chronicler Bob Biggs Bob Whitmore and Dick Martin and a crew of four and their bag was more than 200 birds shot and retrieved chiefly duck and teal. The party travelled on the motor cruiser Lark with a sailing sampan Victor and converted lifeboat Marion in tow. The book takes the form of a diary with notes on expenses and other practical aspects of organizing the outing. Biggs acknowledges H.T. Wade's With Boat and Gun in the Yangtze Valley 1895; 2nd ed. 1910: "Although the enormous flocks of geese swan and duck that used to be a really wonderful sight seem to have decreased in numbers considerably there are still ideal spots for the wildfowler to shoot from still so many bird ." <br/>The typesetting and paper points to a local Chinese production and a handful of typographical errors are lightly corrected in pencil.<br/>RARE and interesting. Internally a surprisingly fresh copy collating complete with adverts to front and rear: 12 138 16. Introducing a range of "native products" to Americans living in the region the cookery reflects a growing need for nutritious recipes and supply chain substitutions in wartime. The sole copy on the market OCLC reports only 7 copies.<br/><br/>The only Chinese-published cookbook "to deal only with native products and recipes that could be made from them." In their preface to this new cookery the committee for the Women's Auxiliary explains in clear terms what sets their cookery apart. "This book was definitely war product. It was prepared with two ideas in view: that of utilizing local products as substitutes for the home imported foodstuffs and secondly that of reducing the cost of living. It was different from all other cook books that had been published in China for foreigners' use in that it dealt only with native products and recipes that could be made from them." While some recipes are titles in English only the compilers included Cantonese translations wherever possible in addition to including a glossary at the rear called Hints for the Housekeeper as well as a List of Terms Necessary in Food Preparation which both provide translations and pronunciations for Cantonese words related to food and household cleaning products. During and after WWI Shanghai had become a space of rich and problematic interactions between cultures. In addition to rising Western military forces its reputation as the "Paris of the East" drove in American and British tourists while later large residential areas were being built in the north due to war concessions. Opium smuggling prostitution and a spreading wealth gap caused friction. The Women's Auxiliary composed of intelligent and educated members with a cultural appreciation for these fluctuations as well as for the culture into which they had migrated sought to use the kitchen as a positive space for the exchange of food language and ideas.
