PORTUGUESE TRADE WITH CHINA.
A scarce and revealing Portuguese commercial document First edition of this seemingly unrecorded Portuguese prospectus for a new maritime shipping concern operating between Lisbon Brazil and China issued amidst growing European challenges to Portugal's commercial position and one year before the Qing empire significantly loosened restrictions on overseas traders in Canton. The document describes in 27 clauses the terms and operations of a new Portuguese company recently granted by King Joseph I of Portugal sea trade rights for 1771 between Rio de Janeiro Macao and Canton. It records that the company's ship will sail from Lisbon to Macao via Rio as well as the names of its two founders Joaquim Antonio Alberto and Florencio Teixiera de Azevedo and the capital to be raised by stock issues. It appeals for new investors specifies a docking period in Brazil for trading and outlines the freight rates for Macao's residents wishing to ship items back to Portugal. In 1771 the Qing empire finally disbanded Canton's restrictive Cohong system making the Chinese market more directly accessible to foreign traders. In the same year the East India Company was permitted to begin operations in the city mounting a significant challenge to Portugal's trade routes. Canton offered Portugal a route to profits which could more than make up for Macao's steady decline as a commercial centre during the 18th century. Folio pamphlet 311 x 220 mm pp. 11. Elaborate woodcut vignette of Portuguese royal coat of arms on title page. Nineteenth-century string stab stitching edges uncut. Title page dated "8 de Nov de 1770" in a neat contemporary hand additional contemporary annotation - "justo" - on p. 4. Pages bright with a little toning at margins small stabbed perforation at gutter throughout affecting one letter on p. 4. A near-fine copy. unknown

CHINA MARITIME CUSTOMS.
Service List 1935.
Shanghai: Statistical Department of the Inspectorate General of Customs 1935. First edition sole printing of the detailed internal 1935 staff list for the Chinese Maritime Customs Service. This copy is from the library of Charles Williams a senior official in the Service and was issued in his retirement year. Between 1875 and 1948 the Service published an annual list containing basic information on all members of staff and their responsibilities. These volumes only ever distributed for internal use represent a valuable record of the Service's contributions to the economic and political history of modern China. Though not marked as such the present copy was formerly owned by Charles Alfred Speed Williams a scholar-official who entered the Service in 1903 at the junior level of Fourth Assistant and rose through the ranks. It records that by 1935 Williams worked alongside over 9000 other foreign and Chinese employees and he was one of only a few dozen senior officials serving at the Commissioner or Acting Commissioner grade. Late in the year he retired from duty and his colourful experiences were later recorded in his autobiographical work Chinese Tribute 1969. The Chinese Maritime Customs Service was founded in 1854 by Britain and other foreign powers to collect taxes on maritime trade for the Chinese government but its remit quickly expanded to include domestic customs administration the postal service waterway and harbour management and meteorology. These areas of responsibility inevitably overlapped with diplomatic and political issues making the Service one of the most powerful bureaucratic entities in the country. Williams is also well-known for his Outlines of Chinese Symbolism and Art Motives: An Alphabetical Compendium of Antique Legends and Beliefs as Reflected in the Manners and Customs of the Chinese 1931 a work that went through multiple editions over several decades. Quarto. Original yellow card wrappers titles to spine and front cover in black. Foxing and a few marks to wrappers internally clean and bright. A very good copy. unknown

CHINA.
Tourists' Guide to China.
Shanghai: California Directory Association and the Shanghai Times 1926. A well-preserved example of this scarce guide for American visitors to China recorded in just four institutions on WorldCat. Produced during a golden age of East Asian travel this convenient compendium lists places of interest and suggested itineraries for major cities alongside dozens of advertisements for hotels curio shops and luxury goods. Foreign tourists in East Asia were not a new sight in the early 20th century but the construction of railway lines from the late 19th century caused a dramatic increase in the ease and possibilities of travel. In Hong Kong Shanghai and other large cities the number of businesses catering to the foreign tourist market ballooned with many listed in this guide. Inside travellers could find information on the Hong Kong Hotel and the famous Grand Hotel des Wagon-Lits in Peking's Legation Quarter as well advertisements for firms as varied as the Hong Kong and Kowloon Taxicab Company the outfitters Aux Chic Parisien U. B. Pilsener Beer of Shanghai Strehlneek's Chinese Art Studio and Clerici Bedoni & Co. importers of fine Italian wines. Two pages of pidgin English phrases are provided to help travellers ask for the "Sing-song house" the theatre or "Smelleum water" Eau de Cologne. The California Directory Association produced a number of tourist guides for travellers to the Far East all of which are now rare. Duodecimo. With 2 folding maps of central Hong Kong and Shanghai half-tone illustrations in text advertisements throughout. Original red card wrappers title and Chinese dragon to front cover in black. Wrappers lightly creased with small chip to lower tip of front cover internally clean and bright larger folding map with small closed tear partially tape repaired to verso. A very good copy of this vulnerable publication. unknown

Nauchno-issledovatel skii institut po Kitai u (Kommunisticheskai a akademii a ). (Communist Academy China Research Institute.)
Sovety v Kitae: Sbornik materialov i domukumentov "Soviets in China: A Collection of Materials and Documents".
Moscow: Parti noe izd-vo 1933. First edition first printing uncommon institutionally of this widely cited Russian research publication on the soviets controlled by the Chinese Communist Party in the early 1930s. It reflects the Kremlin's keen paternalistic interest in the development of China's communist movement and stamping Comintern authority on Mao and other party leaders. Worldcat records just ten copies. After the collapse of the Chinese Communist Party's CCP First United Front with the Kuomintang in 1927 the remnants of the CCP retreated to rural areas and formed a number of soviets as experiments in cultivating a socialist revolution in the countryside. These base areas including Jingangshan and Jiangxi-Fujian became the birthplaces of the rurally-focused ideology that would eventually deliver the whole of China for the CCP. Historical research continues to reveal the Soviet Union's extensive involvement in the CCP's early growth. In 1930 Stalin and other Comintern figures had been instrumental in convincing a wing of the CCP leadership to abandon hopes of forming urban soviets and instead focus on cultivating support among the peasantry. By 1933 having grown to distrust Mao's leadership Moscow again altered the shape of the party by sending Bo Gu one of the "28 Bolsheviks" and Otto Braun to take charge of the Jiangxi soviet and manage military operations against Kuomintang encirclement campaigns. Moscow needed access to the most up-to-date information on the base areas. The present work contains a 100-page introduction to the Chinese soviets co-authored by the Russian Sinologist Evgenii Sigismundovich Iolk 1900-1937 who was ideally qualified on account of having been in China in 1926-27 as a member of Borodin's staff specialising in agrarian issues. During this period Iolk had had a front row seat to Mao's early attempts to organise the peasantry. In 1932 he began working in the intelligence section of the General Staff of the Red Army in which role he undoubtedly enjoyed access to the latest information on developments in China. Octavo. With 5 folding maps 1 with colour. Original red cloth title to spine and front board reverse outlined in silver block silver hammer and sickle device to spine. With the errata slip tipped in. A few marks and faint stains to cloth extremities a little rubbed textblock and upper margin of maps lightly browned. A very good copy. hardcover
