With adventures among the mountain Kirghis; and the Manjours, Manyargs, Toungouz, Touzemtz, Goldi, and Gelyaks: the hunting and pastoral Tribes. , architect and traveller, Thomas Witlam Atkinson (1799 - 1861) and his wife Lucy, spent seven years travelling in Siberia and Central Asia during the period 1847 - 53. Their son Alatau was born during their travels at the beginning of November in 1848 in what is today Eastern Kazakhstan. Bearing in mind the conditions they were living in and the extreme cold, it is a miracle that he survived! Thomas Atkinson's first book "Oriental and Western Siberia: A Narrative of Seven Years' Explorations and Adventures in Siberia, Mongolia, The Kirghis Steppes, Chinese Tartary, and Part of Central Asia" was first published in London and New York in 1858. In the preface to this, his second book describing the travels he (and his wife and son who are invisible in his writing) gives more detail on the natural history and resources of this vast region than he gave in "Oriental and Western Siberia.". He did not confine himself to seeking only to satisfy the scientists among his readership but also discusses the possibility of British commerce in the region. "Our commerce, prodigious as are its operations, is, its is well known, capable of infinite expansion, and I have laid open a field of almost incalculable extent, where enterprise, skill, and industry are sure to find a profitable investment." He also addresses the great interest in Britain in Russian ambitions for the region: "For those of my compatriots who have been alarmed by the approaches of Russia to our Indian Empire, I have faithfully stated every step that has recently been made in this direction, and afforded them an opportunity of learning her present position on the north of the Himalaya. Her existing relations with China, now that we are engaged in a war with its government, will doubtless give increased interest to the facts I have been enabled to collect respecting the several advances she has skillfully made into Chinese territory, and the consequent extraordinary development of her own." Paperback. Very Good. From Publishers Weekly The Chinese Cultural Revolution lasted from 1966 to 1976, and reactions to it have dominated Chinese writing since. The so-called "Chinese Western" examines the impact of the Revolution on impoverished, isolated western China, regions profoundly entrenched in tradition. Each of the eight stylistically varied stories selected by Zhu Hong, a professor of American literature in Beijing who has also taught at Harvard, illuminates the bewilderment and undeniable courage of a people confronted by monumental change. In Jia Pingwua's nearly mythic "How Much Can a Man Bear?" the injustices of the Cultural Revolution are only a politicized form of existing enslavement: " 'Let me tell you,' " says a husband to his wife, " 'living, your body belongs to me, and dead, your ghost is mine!' " The urban student who narrates Zhu Xiaoping's "Chronicle of Mulberry Tree Village" observes a destitute rural village to which he has been sent for reeducation and concludes that its guileful inhabitants elude his ability to judge them. (Illustrated Scenes from the Life of the Sage, Confucius). 30x40 cm. chinese tex,t, maps, illustrations, portraits + 105 woodblock prints depicting the life of confucius, in the original chinese sewn binding. protected in later chinese style blue cloth box, with straps and ivory needles. a very good copy. scarce.A recent article by Chun Shum in the 'East Asian Library Journal' (Vol. 10, no. 1) provides a wealth of information on what amounts to an exemplary sub-genre of Chinese illustrated book production. In fact, scenes from the life of the Confucius are, arguably, at the fountainhead of book illustration in China. Illustrations of Confucius' life exist in three media: as paintings, engraved on stone (typically reproduced in collections of rubbings), and as woodblock printed editions. The earliest painted version were probably produced in during the Eastern Han period; three sets of stone engravings are said to exist; and there have been many woodcut editions of the Sage's illustrated life. The earliest printed versions are thought to date to the 13th century, but no such Song editions survive. There are several Ming editions. The quality of the illustrations and of the prints differ greatly. This one is taken fromt blocks that appear to be the best we have seeen.The present work is a late Qing edition, most likely a later printing from the blocks prepared by Kong Xianlan in 1874. This edition is noted and described in Chun Shum's article (pp. 153-55), and the sample illustration reproduced matches the corresponding images in the present work. All 105 images collated by Chun Shum are present, along with the introductory text taken from the biography of Confucius in the 'Shiji'. Quality of paper and printing indicate that this may be a somewhat later impression from Kong's blocks, impossible to date precisely. the impressions are clear and the book is a rich source of the visual imagery - based on earlier, Ming model - produced at the time. Fortune was the first plant collector to travel in China after the conclusion of the Opium War, as a botanical collector for the Horticultural Society of London starting in 1843. Travel was not allowed for more than 30 miles past Shanghai, but he set off by boat from Shanghai, in Chinese costume complete with shaved head and pigtail and was the first westerner to reach Soochow and many other parts of China, collecting large numbers of plants and seeds. The book contains two chapters on the cultivation and manufacture of tea with suggestions on the possibilities of developing a tea industry in India.
