Sheet of six Épinal prints military and religious subjects
France: no publisher no date early twentieth century. Striking hand-colored sheet of six "images d'Épinal." Inexpensive broadsides like these were hugely popular in France in the nineteenth century: naïve woodcuts brightly colored featuring images of Catholic saints Napoleonic battles and storybook characters. By the turn of the twentieth century lithography had emerged as the primary printing process and the range of subjects had greatly expanded but there was still a market for images printed in the old style a graphic tradition that influenced modernists from Henri Rousseau to Alfred Jarry. This group of six separate images printed from blocks on a sheet of Ingres d'Arches paper may be a publisher's proof. The military and religious subjects include uniformed soldiers on horseback the Madonna and child and Saint Hubert's encounter with Christ in the form of a stag. A bright fine example. Single sheet of six woodblock prints printed recto only and colored en pochoir measuring 14.75 x 19 inches. no publisher unknown books

The preface offers an introduction to mixing colors and technical tips for young painters. Subjects vary widely from realistic animals including a striking lobster to a dressed-up family of anthropomorphic mice from nursery scenes to depictions of outdoor sports and play. A charming survival. Single volume measuring 7 x 10 inches: 124. Original blue cloth spine stiff paper boards upper board color-printed to resemble a three-dimensional traveling trunk book trimmed in that shape. Text printed on one side only with thirty uncolored scenes facing their colored counterparts. Chicago 1930s A remarkable archive of 52 original designs for light fixtures executed in watercolor ink and graphite on heavy card stock. Most sheets measure approximately 20 × 13 inches with one large folding drawing included. Each design bears the distinctive Beardslee blindstamp. Some sheets show minor surface smudging and light edge wear consistent with age and use. The Beardslee Chandelier Manufacturing Company based in Chicago Illinois was a leading producer of high-quality gas and electric light fixtures in the early 20th century. The company originated as the W.S. Edwards Manufacturing Co. but in 1901 under the leadership of George Murray Beardslee b. 1868 it was renamed and expanded its operations. Beardslee who had joined the firm in 1890 served as both treasurer and vice president. Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society HistoryWiki One of Beardslee's key designers was Anton Dvorak b. 1888 a graduate of both the Chicago Institute of Art and the Lewis Institute of Chicago. Dvorak began his career at the Chicago Gas and Electric Fixture Co. 1904-1914 before joining Beardslee where he eventually became vice president. Between 1921 and 1930 he filed six patents with the U.S. Patent Office contributing significant innovations in lighting design. Encyclopedia of Bohemian and Czech-American Biography Vol. 1 Miloslav Rechigl Jr. Beardslee specialized in stylish yet affordable lighting fixtures for banks churches retail stores and offices. By the mid-1920s the firm had earned a national reputation described as "one of the largest and best known lighting equipment companies in the Midwest." Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune September 30 1925 This collection reflects the elegance and precision of Art Deco design. Each drawing is meticulously labeled with a model number and scale and many include notes specifying their intended installation locations-such as "2nd hall" "men's room" "civic room" "safe deposit" "main stairs" "main lounge" and "parlour." Design - Lamps - Original Photographs.
Ghent Emile Schulze circa 1910-1935. A set of nearly 140 original b/w and full colour photos mounted of lamp designs. = A fine and large collection of original photographs with an average size of 15 x 10 cm 6" x 4" but many larger or somewhat smaller of well over 250 different models of lamp. A few are printed. The vast majority mounted on 122 more-or-less similar-sized cardboard sheets 14 x 24 cm; 5.5" x 9.5" sometimes two photos on one card or one photo showing up to 12 or more different designs. Several come with handwritten notes about their dimensions the light bulbs to be used a catalogue number and so on. Some are hand-coloured or in colour photography. A minority 16 loose or mounted on smaller cardboard sheets. One is a postcard dated 1932. Added: 33 similar cards with mounted photos of candle-sticks ornaments and the like from the same source. Also included is a business document from the firm of Etablissements Emile Schulze Gand Ghent Belgium. Apparently this firm was a major upmarket lamp dealer in pre-WWII Belgium and probably went out of business in the 1970s. The Museum van Oude Techieken Museum of Old Technicnologies MOT in Ghent lists two Emile Schulze catalogues: Fabrique d'appareils d'éclairage et de manchons à incandescence and Fabrique de Lanternes. Appareils d'Eclairage Manchons à incandescene. All cards and photographs are in good condition. A very attractive unique collection. unknown
