ill., br. La balla di paglia, come materiale di costruzione, garantisce una notevole riduzione dei costi e dei consumi energetici, grazie alle eccellenti caratteristiche di isolamento termico. I primi edifici risalgono alla fine dell'Ottocento e si devono ai coloni inglesi delle pianure del Nebraska, i quali in mancanza di pietre e di legname utilizzarono con successo balle di paglia per costruire le loro case. Tale tecnica prosperò fino agli anni quaranta quando la diffusione del cemento ne causò il graduale declino. Attualmente, in tutto il mondo, vengono costruiti circa 1000 nuovi edifici in paglia all'anno. In Italia, uno dei primi fabbricati in balle di paglia è stato realizzato nel comune di Pramaggiore (Ve): si tratta di un'abitazione su due piani, ognuno dei quali ha un'estensione di circa 140 metri quadri. L'edificio, munito di regolare permesso a costruire, è stato realizzato da Stefano Soldati, allievo di Barbara Jones. Egli stesso ha partecipato alla costruzione di una decina di edifici in balle di paglia in diversi paesi europei.

McVoy & Campbell p. 42. Final novel by this author who was born in Ohio and lived in Cedar Rapids Iowa. Her first novel was written under a male pen-name Ferris Jerome and that was followed by a Utopian novel set on Mars and a novel about slavery compared to "Uncle Tom's Cabin". This was a historical novel set in 18th Century Louisiana.The book is noted in McVoy and Campbell but the author was not from Louisiana. Her sister was and it was visits to her sister by which she came to know the state and write about it. A. C. McClurg & Co hardcover

The jacket is complete though the jacket price has been neatly removed leaving a small diamond shape 1cm hole on the inner flap and looks very presentable in its removable transparent protector. .
