L'Ellenismo vide in Magna Grecia la caduta delle colonie greche, tra cui Taranto, gradualmente inglobate nella nuova struttura romana: da comunità indipendenti a centri amministrativi. La preziosità dei prodotti e l'uso di particolari classi di gioielli, collegato a determinati strati sociali, definiti, ma non certo strettamente localizzati, motivano circolazioni ampie di modelli e di prodotti finiti, l'interpretazione delle quali oscilla tra i luoghi da cui i preziosi si diffondono e dall'opposta collocazione delle botteghe, passando attraverso l'intermediazione dell'orafo.
