Lange dominierte der Tauschwert von Design die Diskussion. Dekoration und Oberflächenmanipulation in der industriellen Warenproduktion schienen einzig als Aufgabenfeld zu verbleiben. Diese historische Hypothek zeigt sich auch in den Zeichentauschwert-Zitaten von Designklassikern, wie sie in der bildenden Kunst im Zuge "relationaler Ästhetiken" hoch im Kurs standen. Dem wäre nun das kritische Potential des Gebrauchswert von Design-Lösungen und die Analyse der damit verbundenen arbeitsteiligen Produktionsprozesse entgegenzusetzen, (siehe dazu den Beitrag von Sven Lütticken - und die Covergestaltung von Jorge Pardo). Im Beharren auf der Funktionalität von Planung und Entwurf ist das entscheidende Moment einer emanzipatorischen, utopischen Vorstellung von Design zu suchen, (siehe dazu das Gespräch zwischen Jesko Fezer und Tomas Maldonado).
