The first book published by the philosopher and statesman Francis Bacon 1561-1626 Baron of Verulam and Viscount Saint Alban this collection of essays encompasses a wide range of subjects from the outer workings of the law and society to the internal workings of human sensitivity wisdom and friendship; full of erudite observations and pithy statements "Essays" was highly praised at the time of its publications and was seen as a paragon of the essay form. This publication by the Limited Editions Club was designed by Bruce Rogers 1870-1957 American typographer and inventer of the "Centaur" typeface considered by many to be one of the greatest book designers of the twentieth century. He designed books for the Riverside Press Cambridge where he cut his first typeface "Montaigne" named for the first book it appeared in "The Essays of Montaigne" 1903; he designed "Centaur" while working as house designer for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This creation shows the Bruce Rogers touch in so many details including the elegant floral initial capitals he created the imaginative device on the colophone and the patterned paper covering the boards based on an Elizabethan design. A lovely work this copy with many signatures unopened thus almost as new. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter teal cloth with paper boards in teal and gold with an Elizabethan pattern re-drawn by Bruce Rogers gilt lettering and ornaments on the spine top edge gilt fore- and bottom edges rough cut title page in red and black floral initials in black by Bruce Rogers throughout some signatures unopened; monotype Shakespeare Worthy special paper folio size 13" by 9" pagination: i-v vi-ix x-xii 1-3 4-190 1 colophon one of 1100 copies this number 540 signed by Bruce Rogers on the colophon. In glassine wrapper housed in a clamshell box covered in teal cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. ___CONDITION: Volume is fine with clean boards straight corners a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright with many of the gatherings unopened and entirely free of prior owner markings; a minute amount of rubbing to the corners and a few small spots of foxing to the front free endpaper else fine. The glassine wrapper is near fine clean with very light wear to the corners and a small chip to the head of the spine.
