Apres des etudes de sculpture et de ceramique a l'Institut provincial d'architecture et des arts appliques de Hasselt (Provinciaal Hoger Instituut voor Architectuur en Toegepaste Kunsten) entre 1955-1963, il choisit volontairement de s'orienter dans le secteur de la ceramique industrielle. Apres une specialisation en Allemagne et en France, a partir de 1966, il entame une longue periode comme designer au service de la firme hollandaise Royal Mosa. Il y restera jusqu'en 1989. Parallelement a cette activite, Pieter Stockmans enseigne le design industriel. Entre 1969 et 1998, il enseigne a la KHLim (Katholieke Hogeschool Limbug) a Genk. Entre 1983 et 1985, specifiquement ? le design ceramique ? a Eindhoven (Design Akademy Eindhoven). De 1997 a 1999, il est examinateur du tres prestigieux Royal College of Art de Londres. A la suite de son exposition au musee de Hasselt en 1981, Pieter Stockmans va doubler son oeuvre de designer d'une oeuvre de plasticien composee de pieces uniques, d'installations et d'integration a l'architecture. Cette dimension plasticienne de l'oeuvre a fait l'objet de nombreuses expositions. Pour cette raison, le Musee royal de Mariemont a souhaite par l'exposition rendre compte de la contribution de Stockmans au design industriel. As a result, an electronic dictionary (containing some 8.000 lemmas) and a morphological recogniser (and a tagger/lemmatiser as a derived product) are realised. Another important achievement is a computer grammar (for sentence analysis) with a parser. For other modules (sublanguage and discourse analysis), software that has been developed elsewhere (Linguistic String Project team of the New York University and the Service d'Informatique Medicale, Assistance Publique - Hopitaux de Paris resp.) is adapted and extended for use with Dutch. In this way, intelligent information processing becomes feasible. Two information extraction applications illustrate the potentialities of the program. The application domain is cardiology and cardiac surgery. All components of the system are situated in their theoretical framework, extensively discussed and illustrated by means of excerpts of Prolog code and figures.
