This particular issue has a full color plate entitled Le Jardin Ensorcele by noted Art Deco artist and fashion designer Erte depicting a fashionable young woman of the period in a cobweb hammock the spider beside her and a stereotype Blackamoor holding the bejeweled rope suspending the hammock beneath by a fountain. The plate and the magazine itself measures about 12" x 8.75" is not printed on the reverse side and is in very good condition. Aluminum boards have moderate general scuffing especially along the edges. Textblock head and tail edges dyed black and moderately scuffed fore and rear edges have mild age-toning and soiling. Signed flat by Ray Bradbury at the conclusion of introduction. Signed flat by Andrew Hoyem beneath the colophon. GH Consignment. Shelved Case 9 3/4. Andrew Hoyem's Arion Press edition of FLATLAND by Edwin Abbott Abbott originally published under the tongue-in-cheek pseudonym "A Square" in 1884 by London's Seeley & Co. FLATLAND satirizes socioeconomic class structures following the various strata of geometric shapes who must traverse a two-dimensional world. Barely successful upon release FLATLAND slowly earned its cult status in the science fiction canon following Albert Einstein's publication of his general theory of relativity. Einstein not unlike Abbott posited the concept of a fourth-dimension and elaborated upon the importance of time affecting Earthly phenomena. Afterwards Abbott's work was perceived as almost prophetic albeit fictional. Throughout the 1960s several writers produced work inspired by FLATLAND including Norton Juster. Released two decades later the Arion Press edition is the truest attempt to contain Abbott's text in a form reflective of its content. Scarce libretto of a strange Futurist one act opera with talking a tree Euphobia shrubs and airplanes among the characters some of which are actually human --aviators soldiers and natives -- even if they intone like actors in a Greek tragedy. This oddball propagandistic work more an oratorio than opera celebrates war "sweet war" aviation and territorial conquest -- the things that cast a spell on so many Futurists and which were the essence of Fascism. Three copies located on OCLC of this libretto brochure at Berkeley Harvard and one in Italy. There are copies of the printed music elsewhere. The work was first performed at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in 1937. 8vo. 20 by 13 cm. 23 pp. Dedicated to Mussolini. Pavolini like many adherents of the Futurist Movement came to embrace Fascism. In his case he had a brother who was a prominent member of the Fascist heirarchy. After the war Pavolini found success as a screenwriter. Age toning to the leaves. G. Ricordi & C. Editori unknown

An extraordinarily beautiful sales catalogue organized around vivid colors as the title suggests. Folio 33 by 25 cm. xxx 30 2 pp. plus wraps. The colors are "Bird of Paradise" "Midnight Blue" "Angel Fish" "Morpho Menelans" emerald curite "Forest Green" "Th Grand Canyon" "Rose Coral" "Italian Waters" "Orchid" "Autumn" and the cars are all Cadillacs. All the cars have in fact two colors both of which are suggested by the color designation and each color and car receives a luxuriant two-page spread with three color illustrations: one for the inspiration for the particular color one of the car interior and one for the outer body. Accompanying the illustrations are fluid intoxicating descriptions that conjure up the imagery the sensate experience the fantasy with only passing mentions of some of the design specifics. The cars include Cabriolets a Roadster a Phaeton Imperials a Brougham a Town Sedan and a Convertible Coupe. One can see designs that both reach back to the fine coaches of a quickly receding era and the more comfortable sleeker cars to come. The brochure was released in conjunction with a road show showcase of the vehicles staged at fine hotels in New York Chicago Los Angeles and San Francisco the Commodore the Drake the Biltmore and the Palace respectively. Wear to the edges of the dust jacket the decorative paper covering the bound card-stock wrap0 with a few scratch lines on front soiling on rear and a few minor closed tears along edges. A hole to the white front fold-in of this jacket. Other than some light pencilled lettering a child's hand clean and bright within.
