‎Deal With the Dead: A Novel‎

‎New York : G.P. Putnam's Sons c2001. 2001. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Good. 302 pages ; 24 cm ;SIGNED by author on the title page ; ISBN 9780399147043 0399147047 ; OCLC 44541795 ; LCCN 00055938 ; LOC No PS3569.T331528 D45 2001 ; blue cloth in worn pictorial dustjacket ; As John Deal seeks to resurrect his late father's Miami building firm he reluctantly agrees to work secretly for the same government agency which once employed his father ; The "unassailable new kingpin of the South Florida crime novel" James Ellroy returns with a breathtaking novel of family secrets and murder. With his first five John Deal novels Standiford attracted universal critical praise and acclaim from such masters as Elmore Leonard Tony Hillerman and Stephen King. With his new Deal however he has surpassed himself. Attempting to resurrect the Miami building firm that his late father ruined Deal is elated to be awarded part of a major project only to find that the project has strings. Deal never knew that under duress his father had been working secretly for a government agency and now the same agency wants Deal to take his place. With great reluctance he agrees--and his life is immediately torn apart as he is caught in the middle of a vicious personal vendetta his family threatened and his friends hunted his own existence hanging by a thread. Deal's only chance is to turn the tables on everybody seeking to use him but unless he finds a way to do it soon . . . there'll be nobody left to save. Filled with intense character-driven action and rich textured prose Deal with the Dead proves again that "like Raymond Chandler Standiford is a poet in a trenchcoat" The Miami Herald. ; Les Standiford is the director of the creative writing program at Florida International University. He has lived in Miami since 1981. ; nick to bottom of front cover ; remainder mark on bottom of textblock ; G/G

New York : G.P. Putnam's Sons, c2001. hardcover‎

When it came to hunting she was a master shot. As a dress designer few could compare. An ingenious architect she innovated the use of marble in her parents' mausoleum on the banks of the Yamuna River that inspired her stepson's Taj Mahal. And she was both celebrated and reviled for her political acumen and diplomatic skill which rivaled those of her female counterparts in Europe and beyond. In 1611 thirty-four-year-old Nur Jahan daughter of a Persian noble and widow of a subversive official became the twentieth and most cherished wife of the Emperor Jahangir. While other wives were secluded behind walls Nur ruled the vast Mughal Empire alongside her husband and governed in his stead as his health failed and his attentions wandered from matters of state. An astute politician and devoted partner Nur led troops into battle to free Jahangir when he was imprisoned by one of his own officers. She signed and issued imperial orders and coins of the realm bore her name. Acclaimed historian Ruby Lal uncovers the rich life and world of Nur Jahan rescuing this dazzling figure from patriarchal and Orientalist cliches of romance and intrigue and giving new insight into the lives of women and girls in the Mughal Empire even where scholars claim there are no sources. Nur's confident assertion of authority and talent is revelatory. In Empress she finally receives her due in a deeply researched and evocative biography that awakens us to a fascinating history. -- Source: Publisher ; Ruby Lal is an acclaimed historian of India and a professor of South Asian History at Emory University. She is the author of Empress: The Astonishing Reign of Nur Jahan Domesticity and Power in the Early Mughal World and Coming of Age in Nineteenth Century India: The Girl-Child and the Art of Playfulness. A hero to the likes of Llosa and Gabriel Garcia Marquez and a vital forbearer to magical realism Onetti won the Cervantes Prize in 1980. A Dream Come True beautifully translated by Katherine Silver gathers Onetti's entire body of short fiction into English for the first time. Onetti's characters drift untethered through strange places with unfamiliar people. A woman idles in a beachside hotel during a prolonged convalescence; a grandmother serves cafe-con-leche to schoolboys resembling her lost grandson. In these mysterious dream-like stories everything is gestured at nothing plainly told. Each offers a brief glimpse into the life of one of Onetti's vast cast of unusual characters intimately rendering their sorrows fears and joys"-- Provided by publisher. ; Synopsis: A Dream Come True collects the complete stories of Juan Carlos Onetti presenting his existentialist complex and ironic style over the course of his writing career. Onetti was praised by Latin America's greatest authors and regarded as an inventor of a new form and school of writing. Juan Carlos Onetti's A Dream Come True depicts a sharp coherent literary voice encompassing Onetti's early stages of writing and his later texts. They span from a few pages in "Avenida de Mayo - Diagonal - Avenida de Mayo" to short novellas like the celebrated detective story "The Face of Disgrace" and "Death and the Girl" an existential masterpiece that explores the complexity of violence and murder in the mythical town of Santa María. His stories create a world of writing which is both universal and highly local mediating between philosophical characters and the quotidian melodrama of Uruguayan villages. ; Juan Carlos Onetti Borges was a Uruguayan novelist and author of short stories. ; Contents: Avenida de Mayo - Diagonal - Avenida de Mayo -- Obstacle -- Possible Baldi -- Tragic end of Alfredo Plumet -- Perfect crime -- Convalescence -- Dream come true -- Masquerade -- Welcome Bob -- Long tale -- Ninth of July : Independence Day -- Back to the South -- Esbjery by the Sea -- House in the Sand -- Album -- Tale of the Rosenkavalier and the Pregnant Virgin from Liliput -- Most Dreaded Hell -- Face of Disgrace -- Jacob and the Other -- As Sad as She -- On the Thirty-First -- Kidnapped Bride -- Matias the Telegraph Operator -- Twins -- Death and the Girl -- Dogs will have their Day -- Presencia -- Friends -- Soap -- Cat -- Marketplace -- Piggy -- Full Moon -- Tomorrow will be Another Day -- Tree -- Montiagne -- Ki no Tsurayuki -- Shotgun -- She -- Araucaria -- At Three in the Morning -- Imposter -- Kisses -- Her Hand -- Back and Forth -- Ti me dai la cosa me io te do la cosa te -- Cursed Springtime -- Beachcomber -- Visit -- Saint Joseph ; FINE

Brooklyn, NY : Archipelago Books, 2019. paperback‎

Anna is a fifteen-year-old girl slouching toward adulthood and she's had it with her life at home. So Anna "borrows" her stepmom's credit card and runs away to Los Angeles where her half-sister takes her in. But LA isn't quite the glamorous escape Anna had imagined. As Anna spends her days on TV and movie sets she engrosses herself in a project researching the murderous Manson girls-and although the violence in her own life isn't the kind that leaves physical scars she begins to notice the parallels between herself and the lost girls of LA and of America past and present. In Anna's singular voice we glimpse not only a picture of life on the B-list in LA but also a clear-eyed reflection on being young vulnerable lost and female in America-in short on the B-list of life. Alison Umminger writes about girls violence and which people society deems worthy of caring about which ones it doesn't in a way not often seen in teen fiction. ; Alison Umminger grew up in Arlington Virginia and as an undergraduate was the fourth woman to be elected president of "The Harvard Lampoon." Today she is a professor of English at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton Georgia where she lives with her family. "American Girls" is her first novel. ; FINE/FINE

New York, NY : Flatiron Books, 2016. hardcover‎

‎Acting Out: A Novel‎

‎New York : Free Press c2003. 2003. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Fine. 1st ed.; 1st printing ; 275 pages ; 23 cm ;SIGNED by author on title page ; ISBN 9780684854809 9780684854816 0684854805 0684854813 ; OCLC 51277474 ; LCCN 2002029810 ; LOC No PS3562.I78276 A64 2003 ; white and blue cloth in pictorial dustjacket ; Benilde Little the beloved bestselling author of "Good Hair" and "The Itch" is a writer whose works are touchstones for legions of people because they reach deeply into readers' lives. Her new novel will do that again. "Acting Out" is the probing poignant and ultimately uplifting story of a woman caught between the life she thought she was supposed to lead and the dreams she gave up long ago. Ina West grew up independent and solitary raised by an artistic unavailable mother and a reliable loving father. As a twenty-something photographer Ina landed in Manhattan's bohemian art scene after college at the same time that she started dating the devoted hardworking Jay Robinson. When her mother's mental state began to deteriorate her closest cousin became dangerously ill and her free artist's lifestyle put her in some vulnerable situations Ina found comfort in Jay's trajectory into the safe privileged world of the African-American upper middle class. Forsaking her independence and creativity for the joys of family life and material wealth she married Jay had three children and moved to the suburbs; gradually Ina gave herself completely to motherhood and the upkeep of their increasingly luxurious lifestyle. And they had it all: the SUV the lavish home the expensive but casual wardrobe. Then one day after twelve years Jay comes home from work and announces that he's leaving. Amid her shock grief and fear a single clear truth emerges: though still physically present Ina herself had checked out of the marriage long ago. As she struggles with single motherhood reduced financial stability and the emotional roller coaster of her breakup Ina undertakes a journey of self-discovery with no sure destination. She moves to a smaller house rekindles an old love and takes up photography again. The old adventuresome independent Ina begins to resurface tempered by a self-knowledge borne of experience: she has learned how to look unflinchingly into her past and to determine what she wants for her future. Little delves into some of the most private and difficult questions people face. This moving ambitious and accomplished novel explores the fallout -- and the healing -- that can occur when the African-American dream crumbles and when a woman is torn between divergent lifestyle choices. Ina's story of loss and courageous self-revelation will resonate for any woman who has struggled with finding her path in life. --Source: Publisher ; ink mark on bottom of text block else VG/FINE

New York : Free Press, c2003. hardcover‎

In I Rhoda Manning Go Hunting with My Daddy Gilchrist writes again of one of her most beloved characters with the hilarity wisdom and poignancy that marks all of her fiction. Here a clutch of stories are told in the voice of Rhoda -- as a child as a divorced mother of three sons and as an old woman recalling the curse and blessing of being the only daughter of Big Dudley. In Remorse a small town hairdresser revisits the last days of his best friend's life and what he might have done to save her. Then her eyes sprang wide and her lips parted and she repeated over and over like a sinner's prayer how she would not sorry away like Marnie.-- From Like a Sister ;It is 1956 and Sister is only thirteen years old but she is a mother to her two younger twin brothers and her toddler sister. Her mother Marnie has had a string of boyfriends and her latest is more interested in building up business at his new café than he is in raising three children that are not his own. Marnie is involved in the café as well--but Sister is not exactly sure how. All she knows is that Marnie isn't around very much. Things weren't always this way--at one time they were close "just like sisters." Now it seems they are strangers and Sister has noticed that the neighbors are giving each other looks--looks that say that whatever Marnie is up to at the café it isn't respectable. Deciding that she will not follow in Marnie's footsteps Sister begins to take charge of her life as best she can by minding her manners and by befriending her kindly next-door neighbor Willa who seems to Sister to be a fine example of how a mother should be. When Felicia Day was a girl all she wanted was to connect with other kids desperately. Growing up in the Deep South where she was "home-schooled for hippie reasons" she looked online to find her tribe. The Internet was in its infancy and she became an early adopter at every stage of its growth-finding joy and unlikely friendships in the emerging digital world. Her relative isolation meant that she could pursue passions like gaming calculus and 1930's detective novels without shame. Because she had no idea how "uncool" she really was. But if it hadn't been for her strange background-the awkwardness continued when she started college at sixteen with Mom driving her to campus every day-she might never have had the naive confidence to forge her own path. Like when she graduated as valedictorian with a math degree and then headed to Hollywood to pursue a career in acting despite having zero contacts. Or when she tired of being typecast as the crazy cat-lady secretary and decided to create her own web series before people in show business understood that online video could be more than just cats chasing laser pointers.Felicia's rags-to-riches rise to Internet fame launched her career as one of the most influential creators in new media. Ever candid she opens up about the rough patches along the way recounting battles with writer's block a full-blown gaming addiction severe anxiety and depression-and how she reinvented herself when overachieving became overwhelming. ; Showcasing Felicia's "engaging and often hilarious voice" USA TODAY ; You're Never Weird on the Internet Almost is proof that everyone should celebrate what makes them different and be brave enough to share it with the world because anything is possible now-even for a digital misfit. --Source: Publisher ; Kathryn Felicia Day is an American actress singer writer and web series creator. She likes to call herself an "old-lady schoolteacher." She is thirty-four. Around Kelly School she is famous for her discipline: "She is mean bro" says one of her students. But children love her. And so will the reader of this extraordinarily moving book by the author of House and The Soul of a New Machine. Mrs. Zajac spends her working life "among schoolchildren." To some it might seem a small world a world of spelling and recess and endless papers to correct. But we soon realize that Mrs. Zajac's classroom is big enough to house much of human nature. Her little room contains a distillate of some of the worst social problems of our time. Some of the children's young lives seem already stunted by physical and emotional deprivation. And some are full of precarious promise. As we come to know these children we long for their salvation - and we come to understand as if for the first time the difference that a good teacher can make in a child's life and in our society. Among Schoolchildren provides the most realistic account of American education ever written - on every page we encounter the precisely rendered truth for which Tracy Kidder is famous. But this is more than a book about education. It is about one woman's indomitability about the joy of acting out of conscience and love. At bottom its subject is nothing less than the struggle between good and evil. In Among Schoolchildren Tracy Kidder has written his most emotionally powerful most memorable work. --Source: Publisher ; Tracy Kidder was educated at the University of Iowa and Harvard University. He served in the US Army in Vietnam. Kidder has garnered numerous literary awards including the Pulitzer Prize in General Non-Fiction and the National Book Award for General Nonfiction both in 1982. In Oh What a Slaughter Larry McMurtry has written a unique brilliant and searing history of the bloody massacres that marked-and marred-the settling of the American West in the nineteenth century and which still provoke immense controversy today. Here are the true stories of the West's most terrible massacres-Sacramento River Mountain Meadows Sand Creek Marias River Camp Grant and Wounded Knee among others. These massacres involved Americans killing Indians but also Indians killing Americans and in the case of the hugely controversial Mountain Meadows Massacre in 1857 Mormons slaughtering a party of American settlers including women and children. McMurtry's evocative descriptions of these events recall their full horror and the deep constant apprehension and dread endured by both pioneers and Indians. By modern standards the death tolls were often small-Custer's famous defeat at Little Big Horn in 1876 was the only encounter to involve more than two hundred dead-yet in the thinly populated West of that time the violent extinction of a hundred people had a colossal impact on all sides. Though the perpetrators often went unpunished many guilty and traumatized men felt compelled to tell and retell the horrors they had committed. From letters and diaries McMurtry has created a moving and swiftly paced narrative as memorable in its way as such classics as Evan S. Connell's Son of the Morning Star and Dee Brown's Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. In Larry McMurtry's own words: "I have visited all but one of these famous massacre sites-the Sacramento River massacre of 1846 is so forgotten that its site near the northern California village of Vina can only be approximated. It is no surprise to report that none of the sites are exactly pleasant places to be though the Camp Grant site north of Tucson does have a pretty community college nearby. In general the taint that followed the terror still lingers and is still powerful enough to affect locals who happen to live nearby. None of the massacres were effectively covered up though the Sacramento River massacre was overlooked for a very long time. "But the lesson if it is a lesson is that blood-in time and often not that much time-will out. In case after case the dead have managed to assert a surprising potency. "The deep constant apprehension which neither the pioneers nor the Indians escaped has it seems to me been too seldom factored in by historians of the settlement era though certainly it saturates the diary-literature of the pioneers particularly the diary-literature produced by frontier women who were of course the likeliest candidates for rapine and kidnap." --Source: Publisher ; Larry McMurtry winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction among other awards is the author of twenty-four novels two collections of essays two memoirs more than thirty screenplays & an anthology of modern Western fiction. Fine/Fine. 422 pages ; 24 cm. ; SIGNED presentation by author on title page to Decatur Book Festival volunteer David Neville 1951-2020 ; ISBN 9780060837389 9780060837396 9780061768040 9780061774959 0060837381 006083739X 0061768049 0061774952 ; OCLC 262886342 ; blue cloth in color pictorial dustjacket ; A hilarious novel about one woman's quest to redo an old house . . . and her life ; After her boss in a high-powered Washington public relations firm is caught in a political scandal fledgling lobbyist Dempsey Jo Killebrew is left unemployed and broke. Out of options she reluctantly accepts her father's offer to help refurbish Birdsong the old family place he recently inherited in Guthrie Georgia. All it will take he tells her is a little paint and some TLC to turn the fading Victorian mansion into a real-estate cash cow. But when she arrives Dempsey realizes that "Bird Droppings" would more aptly describe the moldering Pepto Bismol-pink dump with duct-taped windows and a driveway full of junk. There's also a murderously grumpy old lady one of Dempsey's distant relations who has claimed squatter's rights and isn't moving out. Ever. Everyone in Guthrie seems to know Dempsey's business from a smooth-talking real-estate agent to a cute lawyer who owns the local paper. As if that's not bad enough pesky FBI agents keep showing up on her doorstep looking for information about her ex-boss. All Dempsey can do is roll up her sleeves and get to work. Before long what started as a job of necessity somehow becomes a labor of love and ultimately a journey that takes her to a place she never expected-back home. --Source: Publisher ; Mary Kay Andrews was born Kathy Hogan Trocheck on July 27 1954 in St. Petersburg Florida. ‎Harvard University Press Cambridge Mass. 1981 1981. 5th or later Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. viii 356 pages : illustrations ; 24 cm. ; ISBN 9780674575035 0674575032 ; OCLC 6762059 ; blue cloth in chipped dustjacket ; Contents: Presenting the Milky Way -- The data of observation -- The sun's nearest neighbors : stellar populations -- Moving clusters and open clusters -- Pulsating stars and globular clusters -- The whirling galaxy -- The nucleus of our galaxy -- The interstellar gas -- Dark nebulae and cosmic grains -- The spiral structure of the galaxy -- Our changing galaxy ; A swirling spiral of 100 billion star-suns star clusters nebulae and cosmic dust the Milky Way is our home galaxy and for astronomers a source of endless fascination. Since 1941 The Milky Way has conveyed Bart and Priscilla Bok's own fascination with our galaxy in an authoritative yet easily understandable account. For two generations this immensely popular book has been the standard introduction to the Milky Way but once again scientific advances have demanded a complete revision and thorough updating. In just the last decade an entirely new model of a much more massive Milky Way has emerged and new techniques of radio and infrared astronomy have opened up the full study of the galactic center. As in earlier editions presentation of new research and dynamic new theoretical advances will delight amateur and professional stargazers alike.; Born in northern Holland Bart Jan Bok received his Ph.D. from the University of Groningen. His poor performance on a Boy Scout examination covering the stellar constellations kindled a lifelong interest in astronomy. Prior to World War II Bok emigrated to the United States becoming a citizen in 1938. For nearly 30 years he served on the faculty at Harvard University where he taught astronomy and directed the Harvard Observatory. From 1966 to 1974 Bok was professor of astronomy at the University of Arizona. Bok is most widely known for the discovery of Bok globules or small patches of dust that might be the sites of star and planet formation. In his later life Bok developed astronomical enterprises in Australia and in Arizona. Bol died in 1983. ; VG/VG

Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Mass., 1981 hardcover‎

A mother and father set out with their kids from New York to Arizona. In their used Volvo--and with their ten-year-old son trying out his new Polaroid camera--the family is heading for the Apacheria: the region the Apaches once called home and where the ghosts of Geronimo and Cochise might still linger. The father a sound documentarist hopes to gather an "inventory of echoes" from this historic mythic place. The mother a radio journalist becomes consumed by the news she hears on the car radio about the thousands of children trying to reach America but getting stranded at the southern border held in detention centers or being sent back to their homelands to an unknown fate. But as the family drives farther west--through Virginia to Tennessee across Oklahoma and Texas--we sense they are on the brink of a crisis of their own. A fissure is growing between the parents one the children can feel beneath their feet. They are led inexorably to a grand unforgettable adventure--both in the harsh desert landscape and within the chambers of their own imaginations. Told through the voices of the mother and her son as well as through a stunning tapestry of collected texts and images--including prior stories of migration and displacement--Lost Children Archive is a story of how we document our experiences and how we remember the things that matter to us the most. Blending the personal and the political with astonishing empathy it is a powerful wholly original work of fiction: exquisite provocative and deeply moving"-- Provided by publisher. ; "A novel about a family of four on the cusp of fracture who take a trip across America--a story told through varying points of view and including archival documents and photographs"-- Provided by publisher. ; Valeria Luiselli was born in Mexico City and grew up in South Korea South Africa and India. ‎New York : HarperCollinsPublishers c1998. 1998. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 1st ed. 1st printing ; 279 pages ; 25 cm. ; SIGNED presentation by author on title page to Decatur Book Festival volunteer David Neville 1951-2020; ISBN 9780060175436 0060175435 ; ISBN 9780060175436 0060175435 ; OCLC 39078859 ; LCCN 98020321 ; LOC No PS3570.R587 M54 1998 ; red and yellow cloth in pictorial dustjacket ; In six previous books Kathy Hogan Trocheck's Callahan Garrity series has risen to the apex of Southern suspense. Now the acclaimed sleuth's latest outing shows how amply she and her creator deserve their acclaim as Callahan and the outrageous band of "girls" in her Atlanta cleaning crew set out during the Christmas rush to prove her no-account brother innocent of his ex-wife's murder. It's a few days before Christmas and Callahan thinks for once she has things under control. Her presents are all bought her baking is almost done and she's relaxing with a well-earned drink when her brother Brian--missing for over ten years--strolls through the door whistling off-key carols and lugging his two-year-old daughter Maura in his arms. Happy as she is to see her charming brother and her ever-more-charming niece Callahan hasn't forgotten that Brian carries trouble wherever he goes. That's never been truer than now for Brian reveals he's kidnapped Maura from his estranged wife who's on the warpath and of course has the law on her side. When Brian's ex-wife is found dead in her spectacularly messy apartment the law comes down on Brian big time. True to form Brian disappears again leaving Maura behind for Callahan to look after and forcing her to clear his name without his help. For Callahan knows that although Brian is many things he's no murderer. As the Christmas rush picks up Callahan her irascible mom Edna and a gaggle of House Mouse employees submerge themselves in the most dangerous undercurrents of Atlanta street life and head for wherever else in the New South's yuletide their search for truth leads them. In true Trocheck tradition Midnight Clear is heartwarming chilling and hilarious--a thoroughly up-to-date and irresistible Christmas tale. --Source: Publisher ; Kathy Hogan Trocheck was born on July 27 1954 in St. Petersburg Florida.
