Modernist surface designs like this one reflected the avant-garde painting styles of the early twentieth century including Cubism abstraction and distortion. First edition of this work by Czech psychoanalyst philosopher art theoretician and writer Bohuslav Brouk one of the first promoters of Freud's work in Czechoslovakia. He was a close friend of Karel Teige and a co-founder of the Czech Surrealist Group in 1934. Considered one of the most original minds of the Czech avant-garde he was also seen as its enfant terrible. Brouk's postscript for Štyrský's "Emily Comes to Me in a Dream" 1933 a defense of erotic literature revealed his great interest in sexual freedom individual creativity and modern artistic tendencies. His research in the early 1930s focused on topics such as masturbation sexology and fetishes and his works were often censored. With a trenchant wit and rhetorical talent he set out to destroy what he saw as everyday myths that make a meaningless existence bearable: ethics work sport and marriage among others. After the war he was an outstanding public critic of communist ideology and fled the country after the 1948 coup. unknown‎

Very rare anthology one of only two published by the Proletkult Proletarian Culture movement in Saratov near the Volga River. It was intended to give a representative overview of the literary and visual works of local proletarian writers and artists who were inspired by the larger movement in the Soviet Union and even abroad and were active in various local workshops and studios. Founded in 1917 at a congress of worker creative workshops Proletkult "began as a loose coalition of clubs factory committees worker's theaters and educational societies devoted to the cultural needs of the working class." With support from the minister of education Anatoly Lunacharsky and theoretical guidance by Aleksandr Bogdanov who believed that only art made by the proletariat can reflect most accurately the reality of the proletariat "by 1918 it had expanded into a national movement with a much more ambitious purpose: to define a unique proletarian culture that would inform and inspire the new society" Lynn Mally. Culture of the Future: The Proletkult Movement in Revolutionary Russia 1990; pp. xviii.<br /> <br /> This volume opens with a tribute to F. I. Kalinin 1882-1920 a Russian revolutionary and literary critic who had served as chairman of Proletkult prior to his untimely death. It contains poetry and prose by young proletarian writers some of which signed other texts under pseudonyms. While many of them praise the virtues of hard work industrialization and the revolutionary struggle others are more lyrical in tone. Among the authors are K. An attractive edition showcasing the work of Valentin Serov 1865-1911 with a ten-page biographical sketch by Sergei Makovskii. Serov was a popular and widely influential Russian painter and portrait artist who was initially allied with the Itinerants Peredvizhniki and whose style gradually developed from an understated impressionism to a more overtly Modernist approach during his affiliation with "The World of Art" after 1900. Decorative wrappers as well as Kogan's elaborate publisher's emblem designed by Boris Grosser 1889-1982 a French Jewish artist of Russian birth who illustrated numerous books published by Russian emigres with his distinctive woodcut designs. After studying with Bilibin Grosser continued his training in Munich and Paris. After 1918 he lived in Odessa and in 1920 he emigrated settling in Paris after 1921. He collaborated with numerous publishing houses in Paris Berlin and Holland illustrating the works of Ivan Bunin Vladimir Nabokov and many others. The book was published to celebrate the five-hundredth anniversary of the appearance of the first printed book in Bohemia in 1468 The Trojan Chronicles. From the English-language resume: "the great seventeenth-century Czech humanist Jan Amos Komenský . had faith in the grandiose possibilities open to the printed word that can spread life-giving ideas. And finally it is to the second half of the twentieth century that the book owes its graphic design. Small loss to corner of first leaf; pre-war stamps to title verso and p. 21 of the Ukrainian Public Library without inventory numbers marking the book part of the later dispersed duplicate exchange fund. A striking important Ukrainian avant-garde book designed by Vasily Sedliar 1899-1937 a leading Ukrainian painter illustrator and art pedagogue of the interwar period who was killed during the Stalin Terror of 1937. The book is likely the first monograph on Béla Uitz 1887-1972 a Hungarian-Soviet avant-garde artist who later turned to monumental painting creating large-scale murals for the Kharkiv Krasnovodsk Theatre a project he worked on with Sedliar. Uitz was initially influenced by Cubism Expressionism and later Constructivism with the 42 reproductions of his work in this volume tracing his artistic trajectory. Active in Comintern in Hungary France Austria and Germany in 1926 Uitz moved to the Soviet Union joining the October group and teaching at VKhUTEMAS in 1927-1930. In 1931 Uitz was elected secretary of the International Union of Revolutionary Artists at a conference held in Kharkiv and commissioned to decorate the Kharkiv theatre with this volume likely published for the occasion.<br /> <br /> The Ukrainian art critic and monumental painter Ievhen Kholostenko 1904-1945 wrote the introductory text to the volume. Both Sedliar and Kholostenko were students of Mykhailo Boichuk 1882-1937 at the Kyiv Academy of Art. A celebrated modernist painter Boichuk came into disfavor in the 1930s. His arrest and execution he was accused of being "an agent of the Vatican" affected an entire generation of students known as the "Boichukists" who practiced the innovative kind of monumental painting Boichuk taught. One of the closest associates of Boichuk Sedliar was part of the so-called "executed renaissance" rozstriliane vidrodzhennia a generation of innovative artists and writers who perished during the Great Purge. Professional restoration to spine and wrapper edges. Toned due to stock; else a good or better copy. First book of poetry by the Ukrainian poet critic and translator Dmytro Zahul 1890-1944 with wrapper design by the prolific Ukrainian graphic and poster artist Okhrim Sudomora. A Bukovina native Sahul published his first poems in the newspaper "Nova Bukovyna" in 1912. The publication of this collection the first of four published by the poet was noted for its symbolist imagery. The collection brought notoriety to Zahul who would move to Kyiv to work as an editor in the screenwriting department of Ukrainfilm in the 1920s. In this period he also came to head the literary organisation "Western Ukraine" an outgrowth of Pluh the Union of Peasant Writers of Ukraine. In 1933 Sahul was arrested for his work with "Western Ukraine" and accused of excessive nationalism along with many other Ukrainian writers and intellectuals repressed in this period later dubbed the "executed renaissance". Thirteen pages with isotype graphics including two in color. Lacking the twenty-nine leaves of isotype illustrations which were apparently issued along with the pamphlet. Very good save for light rust from staples to gutter of last few leaves. KonviÄka 1900-1971 originally from near Hodonín was a teacher and author of several works on pedagogy and schooling with a special interest in art education crafts and visual statistics. From 1928 to 1934 he was active at the Masaryk Experimental Differentiated School in Zlín the home of the illustrious Tomáš BaÅ¥a Shoe Company which shaped the infrastructure and culture of the entire town. The school was one of three experimental schools in Czechoslovakia which allowed students to explore various hands-on projects rather than following traditional syllabi and it had direct ties to BaÅ¥a. Derek Sayer describes the entrepreneur's ambition for the town as follows: "Zlín in Moravia Tomáš BaÅ¥a's company town is a show-piece of designed modern living. Its administrative building a seventeen-story skyscraper built in 1937-38 may well have been the tallest building in Europe at the time. Still more distinctive was BaÅ¥a's provision of standardized family houses and apartments for his workers and a range of social amenities from "Masaryk Schools" to hospitals to community centers. It is an eminently modernist vision which the visiting Le Corbusier for one much appreciated" Derek Sayer The Coasts of Bohemia p. 200. The building housing the progressive Masaryk Schools built in 1927-1928 after plans by FrantiÅ¡ek Lydie Gahura was also a cutting edge construction which was demolished in 1988.<br /> <br /> In the present work KonviÄka speaks to drawing instructors at schools and outlines the basic principles of visual statistics. He discusses Otto Neurath and the Vienna Method as well as the Moscow Insitute of Visual Statistics Izostat which in its own ways applied Neurath's methods. Another figure whose work he singles out as pioneering in this field is Augustin Tschinkel. Via the Czech journal "ZemÄ› SovÄ›tů" Land of the So­viets various examples of Soviet Isotype illustrations have made it onto the pages of KonviÄka's book. Original promotional leaflet for the Magdeburg stop of the international exhibition "Fotografie der Gegenwart" Contemporary Photography organized by the Folkwang Museum Essen in conjunction with the Magdeburg exhibition office and curated by Kurt Wilhelm-Kästner. Playing a key role in cementing photography's role within modern art and visual culture the exhibition was originally shown at the Museum Folkwang in Essen and later in Hannover Berlin Dresden Magdeburg and London among other locations. In particular it highlighted the achievements of Neue Sachlichkeit and "Neues Sehen" with its connections to the Bauhaus. Among the contributors were major figures such as Herbert Bayer Karl Blossfeldt Hans Finsler John Heartfield Germaine Krull Man Ray Moholy-Nagy and Lucia Moholy Albert Renger-Patzsch August Sander as well as schools and organizations such as the Voks Soviet-Film-Photo agency among many others. Very good. First edition of the catalog for the first comprehensive exhibition of visual poetry in the GDR. The two curators of the exhibition the Chilean graphic designer muralist and set designer Guillermo Deisler and the graphic designer Karla Sachse met through mail art networks connecting Chile and the GDR. Following the Chilean military coup in 1973 Deisler fled into exile. Before settling permanently in the GDR he also lived for a time in France and Bulgaria. For the Mail Art artists the tradition of visual poetry was an important point of reference. Yet the interplay of text and image was not a harmless purely aesthetic one in East Germany; under the conditions of secret police surveillance Mail Art was also a strategy of creative encryption. The two curators did not exhibit the works solely out of historical interest but also out of a contemporary interest in production aesthetics. In this way prints from the Renaissance and Baroque periods were linked with futuristic Dadaist and contemporary experiments in Concrete Poetry from East and West. The loose-leaf pages of the catalog encourage the viewer to step beyond a purely historical perspective and actively try out other constellations. Here the freedom of the letters becomes for the viewer a freedom of the pages.<br /> <br /> The focus was on contemporary visual poetry. A poor copy but very scarce. I believe this was the author's first book. Lewis Foreman Day 1845 - 1910 was a British decorative artist and industrial designer and an important figure in the Arts and Crafts movement. His professional association with William Morris and other key figures of the Arts and Crafts movement such as Crane and W. A. S.
