Small folio 275 x 200 mm. bound in publisher's wrappers illustrated by Czech artist P. Skala. Moscow: Izdatel'stvo AKHRR: Shkola FZU pri 1-i Obraztsovoi tipografii 1928. A remarkable collection of Soviet imagery intended as instruction for decorating workers' clubs reading huts and use during rallies. The illustrations include fully decorated interiors concepts for 'hands-on' attractions such as a 'rayok' or Russian peep show shooting galleries and quiz shows. Most of the imagery is in the constructivist style but also includes numerous caricatures of western fat cats fascists and even a Ku Klux Klan member which would have been inspiration for costume design. Rare OCLC finds just one copy at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. The leaves with illustrations have an even toning from the printing process else a fine copy with the errata slip and unusually printed on fine thick paper. unknown

He Completed His Undergraduate Education At The University Of Alberta With A B.Sc. Degree In Engineering Physics In 1945 Received The M.Sc. Degree From Caltech In 1947 And The Ph.D. In 1952. Most Of His Academic Career Has Been At Caltech Where He Was The Theodore Von Karman Professor Of Aeronautics Emeritus At The Time Of His Death. A spectacular series of designs with superb colour woodblock plates with each volume devoted to a different motif. Volume 1 is Ryu no maki the dragon. Volume 2 is Hoo no maki the phoenix and Volume 3 is Shishi no maki the lion. Both the full colour plates and the monochrome plates facing them are masterpieces of the woodblock maker's art. Unsodo is the name of a large Japanese publishing company with branches in both Tokyo and Kyoto. Founded in 1891 this company is still in existence today. From the 1890s through the 1930s the Unsodo publishing house was involved in printing high quality pattern books for various crafts including textiles and lacquer.Some wear to the boards but otherwise a fine set.
