Druse, Ken with Margaret Roach
The Natural Habitat Garden
New York: Clarkson Potter 1994. Stated First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good. Druse The Natural Shade Garden and Roach the gardening editor for Newsday survey gardens all over the United States that focus on native plants; together they "traveled around the country seeking instruction not just from nature's aesthetic side but from the actual workings of the nation's dwindling reserve of wild places." The result endowed with the scrupulously detailed and decidedly deep tones of Druse's photographs introduces--and urges--appealing ideas into American gardens. There is for example the prairie simplicity of Dick and Marsha Krueger's garden in Wisconsin where a conventional lawn gave way in part to wildflowers. By contrast a visit to the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island Wash. reveals "grandeur in decay"--the abandon of spreading moss on emergent tree roots and deer fern bulging up from shady spots. The authors also scope out desert gardens in Arizona; New England landscapes backed by familiar maples; and wildlife that tends to thrive with renewed vigor when a garden goes native again. Also included are planting advisories and practical information such as a source guide and suggested reading list." -- Publishers Weekly "This one book used alone provides a wealth of ideas and information to develop your own natural habitat garden." -- Joanne S. Carpender National Gardener "Makes a compelling argument for designing gardens that will bring back birds bees butterflies frogs turtles and hosts of mammals and other organisms one yard at a time." -- Joel M. Lerner Washington Post Book is fine. Dust jacket unclipped has some edge wear and some rubbing especially on the back at the top was crumpled slightly and this left some creases. There is a tiny tear starting at the top of the spine of the jacket. Clarkson Potter hardcover

Binding is Red cloth Hardcover lettered in black on Spine DJ Light Stain mild Wear 173 pgs Interior Nice tight Clean Was Orignally publ in 1874 . Bunkers of Rippleton In this book Optic's message is that groups in society need discipline order and competent leadership to succeed. His genius is that he uses a 12-oared gig to make the point; a boat which requires absolute coordination and cooperation from the rowers. The Bunkers of the sub-title are a bunch of rebellious boys who make life miserable for many on the shores of an upstate New York Lake. After his son Frank has a run-in with the Bunker's Captain Sedley a retired and well-to do shipmaster decides to form a boat club for his son and his friends. In the course of learning to row the boat they learn cooperation discipline and courage and of course manage to outdo the Bunker's with their undisciplined and rebellious ways. There's also a little injustice and false accusation. The falsely accused triumphs in the end and is proven innocent. It is done so well that you feel like standing up and giving a cheer when the innocent is set free. First published about 1850. First Thus. Hard Cover. NY CARLTON Press Geneva Book hardcover

The River Ki. Kinokawa. English
Tokyo : Kodansha International ; New York ; San Francisco : distributed in the United States through Harper & Row 1980. 1980. Very Good. 1st edition ; 243 pp. ; map ; 22 cm. ; ISBN: 0870113852 Kodansha International/USA; 9780870113857 Kodansha International/USA LCCN: 79-66240 ; LC: PL845.R5; Dewey: 895.6/35 ; OCLC: 6644428 ; translated by Mildred Tahara. ; dark red clpoth with grey lettering in color photographic dustjacket ; ex-lib stamps labels pocket ; "The River Ki short and swift and broad like most Japanese rivers flows into the sea not far south of Osaka. On its journey seaward it passes through countryside th at has long been at the heart of the Japanese tradition. And it flows too past the mountains and the villages past the dams ditches and rice fields that provide such a richly textured backdrop to this novel. Powerful enough to sweep away people on its banks and placid enough to carry along with its flow a sumptuous wedding procession the River Ki dominates the lives of the people who live in its fertile valley and imparts a vital strength to the three women mother daughter and granddaughter around whom this novel is built. It provides them with the courage to cope in their different ways with the unprecedented changes that occurred in Japan between the last years of the last century and the middle of this century. Sawako Ariyoshi one of Japan's most successful modern novelists describes this social and cultural revolution largely through the eyes of Hana a woman with the vision and integrity to understand the inevitability of the death of the traditional order in Japan. Ariyoshi writes with a love for detail bound to a broader understanding of the importance of the geographical and biological forces that mold her characters--and the result is a story that flows with all the vitality of the River Ki itself."-- dustjacket ; VG/VG Tokyo : Kodansha International ; New York ; San Francisco : distributed in the United States through Harper & Row, 1980. unknown
