Haruna Shigeharu 1847-1913 was a pottery painter born into the upper classes in Ishikawa prefecture here using his artistic and design skills to organize and edit this "PRACTICAL ARTS DESIGN MAGAZINE" full of black and white design ideas and articles on such topics as the Columbian Exposition etc. Very unusual periodical here in very good condition inside and out. 1908. DESIGN Sugiura HISUI designer. MITSUKOSHI; MITSUKOSHI TIMES; OSAKA MITSUKOSHI Tokyo & Osaka 1908-1923. Western-style magazines 24.9 x 18.4 cm decorated wrappers. Lovely covers most by Sugiura Hisui 1876-1965 or designed under his supervision. Hisui is the most important figure in the development of Japanese commercial art in the 20th century the progenitor of "Taisho Chic" and a force to be reckoned with as a practical designer at Mitsukoshi and an educator at the Japan School of Art the Imperial School of Fine Art and the Tama Imperial School of Art which he co-founded. He even spent two years in Europe in the early 20s researching design. He created many portfolios of design examples for professionals wrote treatises on the principles of design and was a tireless creator of posters and magazine covers. He began work at Mitsukoshi in 1908 as a design consultant in charge of cover art for the house organ MITSUKOSHI TIMES. When MITSUKOSHI magazine began in 1912 he had already been promoted to head of design for the company a year earlier and stayed in that position for decades. His artwork graced the covers of many magazines over the years but it was his work for MITSUKOSHI and MITSUKOSHI TIMES and OSAKA MITSUKOSHI that began his design career. We are offering here a group of issues of those magazines most with his brilliant cover art. The magazines as a form of trade catalog and guide to fashion for the well-heeled clientele of Mitsukoshi department store were intrinsically ephemeral. They are hefty magazines a vade mecum for the bon ton with pictures of summer frocks kimono fabrics morning coats shoes - with instructions on how they should be cleaned stored worn. With pictures and prices and order sheets. Useful and used then thrown away they are seldom found today. A gathering of this size is quite unusual especially as it begins with issues of MITSUKOSHI TIMES from 1908 - the year that Hisui took over design reponsibilities for the house organ. There are 16 pages of color woodblock printed designs and 30 pages of bw collotypes. One of the hybrid design books that Unsodo created in the 20s and 30s. Very clean and bright in the original publisher's slipcase. A very unusual and late effort by Tamahiro 1878-1926 an important Unsodo designer who began his work for them at the turn of the century. Even more unusual in such lovely original condition. Complete. unknown

This "Practical Design" monthly features the work of Oda Kazuma 1882-1956 in this its first issue. This issue features articles on the use of electric lights at night for advertising with a note at the end on some recent advertising posters that have appeared. Obviously a periodical by professionals for professionals in the design and advertising world. Not a world one usually thinks of Oda Kazuma belonging to but here he turns his talents at lithographic printmaking to more practical ends with sevarl examples of advertising designs and commercial art. Very good condition throughout. Very unusual. unknown

KIMONO DESIGN - MANUSCRIPT. 10 1/2" x 14 1/2" oblong design book bound in single backed sheets on the short side with string not fukuro-toji. With a brushed title label sealed throughout but otherwise anonymous. As often happens with manuscripts the name of the shop which used it as a pattern book has been excised. There are 25 black and white design sketches for elaborate kimono. More of a Kano rather than a Rimpa style. The album probably dates from the first half of the 19th Century. A lovely item which suffers from very bad worming throughout. Though the damage is worse at the extremities of the work holes are shot through the paper and effect the design images as well. Sold with all faults. unknown

Significant run of the SAIKA series which captured Japanese and Asian design in all its manifestations - objects utensils. fabrics rugs architectural elements lacquerware cloisonnee etc. etc. There is a total of approximately 500 plates of which about 100 are color woodblock printed and another dozen or so are color collotypes and color lithographs. The remainder are collotypes and offset. An interesting series from the reference library of the Mitsukoshi Department Store. In addition to designing books Armstrong wrote books as well including a comprehensive guide to wildflowers in the American West which she also illustrated.<br /> <br /> This novel by George Washington Cable 1844-1925 tells of a romance set in New Orleans during the American Civil War; Cable considered the "first modern southern writer" used his fiction to highlight the injustices of racism in the South and he is considered a precursor to William Faulkner. Slipcase is also fine strong and sturdy clean without wear. FIRST COLOURED ENGLISH EDITION 1898 4to 300 x 235 mm 11¾ x 9 inches cloth backed boards large coloured illustration to upper cover specially commissioned from Toulouse Lautrec by the original French publishers adverts on endpapers. 23 full page coloured illustrations attributed on title page to F.J. Vernay Yorick etc. printed 1 side only. Most are very interesting: Water Mill Serpentine Dancer Harlequin Traction Engine Mortar Mill Steamboat Volcano Scissors Grinder The Cat and Cherub little black boy crying in bath-tub watched by cat House on Fire etc. 3 are geometric. The book was issued with a 'transparency' rectangular sheet of clear plastic mounted in card frame housed in pocket inside upper cover. When moved over the pictures it produced an illusion of movement. Corners very slightly worn board edges slightly worn covers slightly dusty upper cover slightly rubbed 2 small stains and some scratches to lower cover spine slightly faded endpapers lightly browned transparency split vertically with a small closed tear see image. An occasional pale fingermark to margins otherwise contents clean small piece missing from lower blank corner of 1 plate tiny closed tear with tiny chip to lower margin of Butterfly plate. A very good copy with original transparency damaged as noted. An uncoloured edition with only 13 plates and without the Toulouse Lautrec cover was published the same year.
