Taubert, Eberhard; Fritz Hippler (Design)
Illustrierter Film-Kurier. Der Ewige Jude Illustrated Film-Courier: The Eternal Jew
Berlin: Vereinigte Verlagsgesellschaft Franke & Co 1940. First edition. Loose leaf. Good to good- condition. Quarto. 8pp. Original photo-illustrated wraps with white lettering on cover. Illustrated promotional supplement of the periodical Illustrierter Film-Kurier in gravure. The 1940 film "Der ewige Jude" is a propaganda documentary about the world Jewry after an idea by Eberhard Taubert.

As part of Goebbels' anti-Semitic strategy this film followed the 1937 art exhibition "Der ewige Jude" in Munich and the publication of a book in the same year and with the same title both with derogatory captions asserting the "degenerate Jewish race." Goebbels took an active role in the production of the film and insisted on Fritz Hippler as the director for the film. After the invasion of Poland Goebbels instructed Hippler to send camera crews to Poland to collect footage of Polish Jews. The film starts with an "impressive" foray through the Jewish ghettos in Poland depicting the Jews in filthy living conditions making a living through profiteering instead of honest work. The footage was manipulated in a way to show the Jews as originating in Palestine and from there flooding the earth drawing parallels to the way rats spread through new territory stressing the Jew's ability to adapt to various life styles.

The promotional is illustrated with photomontages depicting Jews from various walks of life Polish street scenes a Rabbi holding up a knife in line with the brutal depiction of a Shechita as the face of Jewry juxtaposed with gleaming pictures of content German people and thankfulness towards a government willing to solve the "Jewish problem." Text in German. Illustrated wraps with some wear horizontal fold small creases and chips along edges and covers reinforced with transparent tape; administered with a quarter inch tape along inside edges along bottom and foredge on back cover. Same with centerfold along bottom and foredges. Vereinigte Verlagsgesellschaft Franke & Co unknown

(GARDEN DESIGN). [DEZALLIER D'ARGENVILLE, ANTOINE JOSEPH]
THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF GARDENING
London: Bernard Linton 1728. Second Edition in English. "With very large Additions and a new Treatise of Flowers and Orange-Trees. 255 x 195 mm. 10 1/8 x 7 3/4. viii 297 i.e. 299 17 pp.Translated by John James.
Contemporary calf boards capably rebacked in a lighter calf raised bands dark brown morocco label with gilt lettering. With tailpieces a number of illustrations and 38 folding plates of garden plans. Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Whyte Melville of Bennochy and Strathkinness; front free endpaper with ink singature of Robert Melvill and the armorial bookplate of Francis Gray Smart. Hunt 471; Henrey 950; Fowler 171 first edition in English; Harris 381. Original boards somewhat crackled as nearly always with treated calf and slightly marked corners quite worn a hint of browning to title and final leaf of ads otherwise a very desirable copy the text and plates in remarkably clean and bright condition.

This is the definitive guide to formal gardening practices in the 18th century containing a thorough exploration of both theory and practice that is elucidated by nearly 40 folding plates drawn by one of the most influential architects of the period. Henrey calls it "the first important book on garden design to appear in England in the eighteenth century" and according to the Met museum's website the work "became the standard international text of the grand French manner of garden design." The text includes a wide array of design recommendations that comprise elements such as labyrinths groves bowling greens porticos colonnades and stairways; examples of different types of ornamentation and embellishment such as statuary and water features; recommendations for the best type of trees to employ; and practical advice for the care and management of plants and gardens. It is also notable as the first book to describe the "ha-ha" a type of fence with a sunken grade on one side creating an invisible livestock barrier while also preserving an unspoiled view of the countryside beyond it. The name supposedly derives from the astonished sound a viewer would make when encountering this ingenious solution. The work was originally published anonymously in French in 1709 and the first edition in English translated by architect John James appeared in 1712. Although the title page of the present work credits it to the great French architect Alexander Le Blond named "architecte du Roi" in France and the chief architect of St. Petersburg it is actually the work of his pupil Antoine Joseph Dezallier D'Argenville 1680-1765. Le Blond however did provide most of the drawings for the plates which beautifully illustrate the various garden designs and structural plans. Our three previous owners are of some interest. The signature on the front free endpaper is probably that of General Robert Melvill or Mellville 1723-1809 who served in the West Indies during the Seven Years' war. He became a plantation owner and governor of the Grenadines Dominica St. Vincent Tobago and Grenada. After returning to Great Britain in 1771 Melvill pursued academic interests and became a member Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries of London as well as a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Because he was a bachelor Melvill's estate went to his cousin John Whyte-Melville 1797-1883 a renowned golfer he became captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in 1823 and the father of the novelist and poet George John Whyte-Melville. Francis Gray Smart 1844-1913 was a homeopathic physician who founded the Tunbridge Wells Homeopathic Hospital. He was also an antiquary and avid coin collector who became a member of the Linnean Society the Society of Antiquaries and the British Numismatic Society. Considered apart from the book's sturdy though not especially attractive exterior the contents here are unexpectedly fresh clean and bright--unusual in a type of book that might normally have experienced use in an unprotected environment. Sir Edmund Beckett Denison [afterwards Edmund Beckett, Lord Grimthorpe] (1816-1905), lawyer, architect and horologist who design
The horologist who designed the Big Ben clock: Sir Edmund Beckett Denison latterly Lord Grimthorpe. Three Autograph Letters Signed to Edward Hayes Plumptre regarding the business of Westminster girls’ school Queen’s College.
ONE: 14 January 1856; Queen’s College. TWO: ‘Valentines Day’ 14 February 1870; 33 Queen Anne Street W. London THREE: 3 April 1870; Doncaster. The third of these letters in particular gives a good indication of his Yorkshire bluntness his entry in the Oxford DNB describes him as ‘a man of arrogance and bile . capable of generosity strong friendships and kindness towards people in need of help’. The three items are in good condition lightly aged; the third with slight wear along one edge. All three are signed ‘E B Denison’ and the second and third are addressed to ‘My dear Plumptre’. ONE 14 January 1856: 3pp 4to. This letter concerns Queen’s College the girls’ school founded in 1848 by Denison’s relation Frederick Denison Maurice of which Plumptre would be Head 1875-1879. Subscribed ‘Chairman of the meeting of the Council this day’ and addressed ‘To the Chairman of the Committee of Education’. Begins: ‘Mr Nicolay is anxious that the Committee of Education should be informed of the opinion of the Council respecting the taking of Boarders in the new house No 68 Harley St.’. He reports the resolutions of the council who ‘think that the matter is now so far advanced that we may ask the Committee to come to a decision on the subject of taking boarders . We beg also to suggest that it is desirable that the meeting or meetings on this subject should be attended by as many of the Professors as possible as it is a matter seriously affecting their pecuniary interests’. TWO ‘Valentines day’ 1870: 2pp 16mo. ‘By this time you have possibly got my letter of yesterday which I took to the College expecting to see you & not observing that it was dated on Monday.’ After a brief discussion of College business he gives this in a postscript: ‘Crassweller came this morning wanted us to guarantee him in an action which a livery stable man is bringing against him for what he calls a nuisance in carrying off the rubbish through the Mews which Spooner referred to in his letter to you. Of course I did no such thing. It may or may not turn out that we shall have to do nothing but Crassweller will settle very differently for himself & yours.’ THREE 3 April 1870: 2pp 12mo. ‘Spooner’s account’ of Crassweller is ‘not very satisfactory’ but he has signed the cheque to him. ‘I have told Bailey that his continued employment is a disgrace to the Portland Estate after all that Bailey knows of him - & the Duke i.e. the Duke of Portland extensive London landowner too - By allmeans sic try the Duke again if you think it will do any good. I have a strong persuasion that in spite of Spooner we ought to have tried to get the building condemned by the M. Board & made it a landlord’s job’. He continues: ‘I have never heard of a 60 year marriage continuans before my father & mother’s. I shall not be in London on Wednesday for more than sleeping at any rate especially as our kitchen boiler is bust.’ Postscript refers to ‘Bickley liberality towards Q. C.’ and Lady Stanley. ONE: 14 January 1856; Queen’s College. TWO: ‘Valentines Day’ [14 February] 1870; 33 Queen Anne Street W. [London] THREE: 3 unknown
