‎Thirteen Moons: A Novel‎

‎New York : Random House c2006. 2006. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 1st trade edition 1st printing ; 422 pages ; 25 cm ; SIGNED presentation by author on title page to Decatur Book Festival volunteer David Neville 1951-2020 ; ISBN 9780375509322 9781400066391 9780812967586 0375509321 1400066395 0812967585 ; OCLC 74270968 ; LCCN 2006284735 ; sea-green and light tan cloth in pictorial dustjacket ; Charles Frazier's Thirteen Moons is the story of one man's remarkable life spanning a century of relentless change. At the age of twelve an orphan named Will Cooper is given a horse a key and a map and is sent on a journey through the wilderness to the edge of the Cherokee Nation the uncharted white space on the map. Will is a bound boy obliged to run a remote Indian trading post. As he fulfills his lonesome duty Will finds a father in Bear a Cherokee chief and is adopted by him and his people developing relationships that ultimately forge Will's character. All the while his love of Claire the enigmatic and captivating charge of volatile and powerful Featherstone will forever rule Will's heart. In a distinct voice filled with both humor and yearning Will tells of a lifelong search for home the hunger for fortune and adventure the rebuilding of a trampled culture and above all an enduring pursuit of passion. As he comes to realize "When all else is lost and gone forever there is yearning. One of the few welcome lessons age teaches is that only desire trumps time." Will Cooper in the hands of Charles Frazier becomes a classic American soul: a man devoted to a place and its people a woman and a way of life all of which are forever just beyond his reach. Thirteen Moons takes us from the uncharted wilderness of an unspoiled continent across the South up and down the Mississippi and to the urban clamor of a raw Washington City. Throughout Will is swept along as the wild beauty of the nineteenth century gives way to the telephones automobiles and encroaching railways of the twentieth. Steeped in history rich in insight and filled with moments of sudden beauty Thirteen Moons is an unforgettable work of fiction ; "Thirteen Moons brings this vanished world thrillingly to life. One of the great Native American and American stories and a great gift to all of us from one of our very best writers." --Kirkus Reviews ; Charles Frazier was born in 1950 and grew up in western North Carolina. When Felicia Day was a girl all she wanted was to connect with other kids desperately. Growing up in the Deep South where she was "home-schooled for hippie reasons" she looked online to find her tribe. The Internet was in its infancy and she became an early adopter at every stage of its growth-finding joy and unlikely friendships in the emerging digital world. Her relative isolation meant that she could pursue passions like gaming calculus and 1930's detective novels without shame. Because she had no idea how "uncool" she really was. But if it hadn't been for her strange background-the awkwardness continued when she started college at sixteen with Mom driving her to campus every day-she might never have had the naive confidence to forge her own path. Like when she graduated as valedictorian with a math degree and then headed to Hollywood to pursue a career in acting despite having zero contacts. Or when she tired of being typecast as the crazy cat-lady secretary and decided to create her own web series before people in show business understood that online video could be more than just cats chasing laser pointers.Felicia's rags-to-riches rise to Internet fame launched her career as one of the most influential creators in new media. Ever candid she opens up about the rough patches along the way recounting battles with writer's block a full-blown gaming addiction severe anxiety and depression-and how she reinvented herself when overachieving became overwhelming. ; Showcasing Felicia's "engaging and often hilarious voice" USA TODAY ; You're Never Weird on the Internet Almost is proof that everyone should celebrate what makes them different and be brave enough to share it with the world because anything is possible now-even for a digital misfit. --Source: Publisher ; Kathryn Felicia Day is an American actress singer writer and web series creator. She is the creator and star of the web series The Guild a show loosely based on her life as a gamer. Now the acclaimed sleuth's latest outing shows how amply she and her creator deserve their acclaim as Callahan and the outrageous band of "girls" in her Atlanta cleaning crew set out during the Christmas rush to prove her no-account brother innocent of his ex-wife's murder. It's a few days before Christmas and Callahan thinks for once she has things under control. Her presents are all bought her baking is almost done and she's relaxing with a well-earned drink when her brother Brian--missing for over ten years--strolls through the door whistling off-key carols and lugging his two-year-old daughter Maura in his arms. Happy as she is to see her charming brother and her ever-more-charming niece Callahan hasn't forgotten that Brian carries trouble wherever he goes. That's never been truer than now for Brian reveals he's kidnapped Maura from his estranged wife who's on the warpath and of course has the law on her side. When Brian's ex-wife is found dead in her spectacularly messy apartment the law comes down on Brian big time. True to form Brian disappears again leaving Maura behind for Callahan to look after and forcing her to clear his name without his help. For Callahan knows that although Brian is many things he's no murderer. As the Christmas rush picks up Callahan her irascible mom Edna and a gaggle of House Mouse employees submerge themselves in the most dangerous undercurrents of Atlanta street life and head for wherever else in the New South's yuletide their search for truth leads them. In true Trocheck tradition Midnight Clear is heartwarming chilling and hilarious--a thoroughly up-to-date and irresistible Christmas tale. --Source: Publisher ; Kathy Hogan Trocheck was born on July 27 1954 in St. Petersburg Florida. She likes to call herself an "old-lady schoolteacher." She is thirty-four. Around Kelly School she is famous for her discipline: "She is mean bro" says one of her students. But children love her. And so will the reader of this extraordinarily moving book by the author of House and The Soul of a New Machine. Mrs. Zajac spends her working life "among schoolchildren." To some it might seem a small world a world of spelling and recess and endless papers to correct. But we soon realize that Mrs. Zajac's classroom is big enough to house much of human nature. Her little room contains a distillate of some of the worst social problems of our time. Some of the children's young lives seem already stunted by physical and emotional deprivation. And some are full of precarious promise. As we come to know these children we long for their salvation - and we come to understand as if for the first time the difference that a good teacher can make in a child's life and in our society. Among Schoolchildren provides the most realistic account of American education ever written - on every page we encounter the precisely rendered truth for which Tracy Kidder is famous. But this is more than a book about education. It is about one woman's indomitability about the joy of acting out of conscience and love. At bottom its subject is nothing less than the struggle between good and evil. In Among Schoolchildren Tracy Kidder has written his most emotionally powerful most memorable work. --Source: Publisher ; Tracy Kidder was educated at the University of Iowa and Harvard University. He served in the US Army in Vietnam. Kidder has garnered numerous literary awards including the Pulitzer Prize in General Non-Fiction and the National Book Award for General Nonfiction both in 1982. Anna is a fifteen-year-old girl slouching toward adulthood and she's had it with her life at home. So Anna "borrows" her stepmom's credit card and runs away to Los Angeles where her half-sister takes her in. But LA isn't quite the glamorous escape Anna had imagined. As Anna spends her days on TV and movie sets she engrosses herself in a project researching the murderous Manson girls-and although the violence in her own life isn't the kind that leaves physical scars she begins to notice the parallels between herself and the lost girls of LA and of America past and present. In Anna's singular voice we glimpse not only a picture of life on the B-list in LA but also a clear-eyed reflection on being young vulnerable lost and female in America-in short on the B-list of life. Alison Umminger writes about girls violence and which people society deems worthy of caring about which ones it doesn't in a way not often seen in teen fiction. ; Alison Umminger grew up in Arlington Virginia and as an undergraduate was the fourth woman to be elected president of "The Harvard Lampoon." Today she is a professor of English at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton Georgia where she lives with her family. ‎With Fire and Sword The Trilogy Book I Ogniem i mieczem. English‎

‎Fort Washington Pa. : Copernicus Society of America ; New York : Hippocrene Books distributor c1991. 1991. 1st Edition 3rd Printing. Hardcover. Good/Very Good. 1st Hippocrene edition 3rd printing ; xvi 1135 pages ; 24 cm ; ISBN 9780870529740 0870529749 ; OCLC23014830 ; Map on lining papers ; Translation of: Ogniem i mieczem ; brown cloth in color pictorial dustjacket ; Despite some deviations the book's historical framework is genuine and the fictional story is woven into real events. Many characters are historical figures including Jeremi Wisniowiecki and Bohdan Khmelnytsky Polish: Bohdan Chmielnicki. Sienkiewicz researched memoirs and chronicles of the Polish nobility or szlachta for details on life in 17th-century Poland. The book was written according to the author "to lift up the heart" of the Polish nation in the unhappy period following the failed January Uprising during the era of the partitions of Poland. Thus it often favors epic plots and heroic scenes over historical accuracy. Nonetheless Sienkiewicz's vivid language made it one of the most popular books about that particular place and era ; By Fire and Sword is a historical novel by the Polish author Henryk Sienkiewicz published in 1884. It is the first volume of a series known to Poles as The Trilogy followed by The Deluge and Fire in the Steppe. The novel has been adapted as a film several times most recently in 1999. ; Far more celebrated than any of his positivist contemporaries Henryk Sienkiewicz began as a journalist and achieved considerable renown with his account of a two-year journey to the United States. Between 1882 and 1888 he wrote three historical novels dealing with political and military events in seventeenth-century Poland: With Fire and Sword The Deluge 1886 and Fire in the Steppe 1888 also translated as Pan Michael. Although superficial in its analysis of historical events the trilogy gained enormous popularity both in Poland and in other Slavic countries thanks to Sienkiewicz's masterful use of epic techniques and of the seventeenth-century colloquial idiom. Even more popular if artistically far weaker was his Quo Vadis 1896 a novel about Rome in the age of Nero Sienkiewicz's fame in the West is chiefly based on this work. Another historical novel The Teutonic Knights 1900 deals with the fifteenth-century struggle between Poland-Lithuania and the Teutonic Order. Henryk Sienkiewicz was awarded The Nobel prize in Literature for 1905 "because of his outstanding merits as an epic writer". ; slight knock else G/VG

Fort Washington, Pa. : Copernicus Society of America ; New York : Hippocrene Books [distributor], c1991. hardcover‎

Her new novel will do that again. "Acting Out" is the probing poignant and ultimately uplifting story of a woman caught between the life she thought she was supposed to lead and the dreams she gave up long ago. Ina West grew up independent and solitary raised by an artistic unavailable mother and a reliable loving father. As a twenty-something photographer Ina landed in Manhattan's bohemian art scene after college at the same time that she started dating the devoted hardworking Jay Robinson. When her mother's mental state began to deteriorate her closest cousin became dangerously ill and her free artist's lifestyle put her in some vulnerable situations Ina found comfort in Jay's trajectory into the safe privileged world of the African-American upper middle class. Forsaking her independence and creativity for the joys of family life and material wealth she married Jay had three children and moved to the suburbs; gradually Ina gave herself completely to motherhood and the upkeep of their increasingly luxurious lifestyle. And they had it all: the SUV the lavish home the expensive but casual wardrobe. Then one day after twelve years Jay comes home from work and announces that he's leaving. Amid her shock grief and fear a single clear truth emerges: though still physically present Ina herself had checked out of the marriage long ago. As she struggles with single motherhood reduced financial stability and the emotional roller coaster of her breakup Ina undertakes a journey of self-discovery with no sure destination. She moves to a smaller house rekindles an old love and takes up photography again. The old adventuresome independent Ina begins to resurface tempered by a self-knowledge borne of experience: she has learned how to look unflinchingly into her past and to determine what she wants for her future. Little delves into some of the most private and difficult questions people face. This moving ambitious and accomplished novel explores the fallout -- and the healing -- that can occur when the African-American dream crumbles and when a woman is torn between divergent lifestyle choices. Ina's story of loss and courageous self-revelation will resonate for any woman who has struggled with finding her path in life. --Source: Publisher ; ink mark on bottom of text block else VG/FINE

New York : Free Press, c2003. hardcover‎

In Oh What a Slaughter Larry McMurtry has written a unique brilliant and searing history of the bloody massacres that marked-and marred-the settling of the American West in the nineteenth century and which still provoke immense controversy today. Here are the true stories of the West's most terrible massacres-Sacramento River Mountain Meadows Sand Creek Marias River Camp Grant and Wounded Knee among others. These massacres involved Americans killing Indians but also Indians killing Americans and in the case of the hugely controversial Mountain Meadows Massacre in 1857 Mormons slaughtering a party of American settlers including women and children. McMurtry's evocative descriptions of these events recall their full horror and the deep constant apprehension and dread endured by both pioneers and Indians. By modern standards the death tolls were often small-Custer's famous defeat at Little Big Horn in 1876 was the only encounter to involve more than two hundred dead-yet in the thinly populated West of that time the violent extinction of a hundred people had a colossal impact on all sides. Though the perpetrators often went unpunished many guilty and traumatized men felt compelled to tell and retell the horrors they had committed. From letters and diaries McMurtry has created a moving and swiftly paced narrative as memorable in its way as such classics as Evan S. Connell's Son of the Morning Star and Dee Brown's Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. In Larry McMurtry's own words: "I have visited all but one of these famous massacre sites-the Sacramento River massacre of 1846 is so forgotten that its site near the northern California village of Vina can only be approximated. It is no surprise to report that none of the sites are exactly pleasant places to be though the Camp Grant site north of Tucson does have a pretty community college nearby. In general the taint that followed the terror still lingers and is still powerful enough to affect locals who happen to live nearby. None of the massacres were effectively covered up though the Sacramento River massacre was overlooked for a very long time. "But the lesson if it is a lesson is that blood-in time and often not that much time-will out. In case after case the dead have managed to assert a surprising potency. "The deep constant apprehension which neither the pioneers nor the Indians escaped has it seems to me been too seldom factored in by historians of the settlement era though certainly it saturates the diary-literature of the pioneers particularly the diary-literature produced by frontier women who were of course the likeliest candidates for rapine and kidnap." --Source: Publisher ; Larry McMurtry winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction among other awards is the author of twenty-four novels two collections of essays two memoirs more than thirty screenplays & an anthology of modern Western fiction. ‎The Letter of the Law‎

‎New York : Warner Books c2000. 2000. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 1st. ed. 1st printing ; SIGNED by author on title page ; 341 pages ; 24 cm ; ISBN 9780446522991 0446522996 ; OCLC 43403470 ; LCCN 00022285 ; LOC No PS3557.R37562 L4 2000 ; brown cloth in pictorial dustjacket ; No parent ever expects his child to die young. So when Donald Sales's 22-year-old daughter is brutally murdered at law school he comes undone. In a fit of rage Sales tells the police that he suspects Eric Lipton one of his daughter's professors is the killer. And when the arrogant but brilliant Professor Lipton is found in possession of her bloody underpants Sales doesn't want the law professor in jail -- he wants him dead. Lipton's attorney is Casey Jordan. As a law professor Lipton knows quite well that anything he says to Casey cannot be used against him. Lipton adamantly denies murdering his young student and Casey believes him. To Casey the girl's father -- Donald Sales -- is a more logical suspect. His violent history makes Casey wonder if he is deranged by grief or by guilt. And when Casey discredits Sales on the witness stand and skillfully deflects the prosecution's attempt to connect Lipton with a series of similar murders Casey believes that justice is at hand. But then -- just as the jury hands its "Not Guilty" verdict to the judge -- Lipton leans over and tells Casey that he is in fact the killer. Then Lipton inexplicably disappears and more bodies begin to turn up. Casey must now decide whether to uphold her legal oath to protect her client.or join forces with an obsessed father who demands that a demented killer be brought to justice. --Source: Publisher ; Timothy Green was born in Liverpool New York on December 16 1963. Fine/Fine. 1st ed. 1st printing ; ix 203 pages 8 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations portraits ; 23 cm ; SIGNED presentation by author on half-title ; ISBN 9781892514684 1892514680 ; OCLC 263116766 ; LOC No PS3569.I256 Z67 1999 ; LCCN 99087287 ; light-green and green cloth in color photographic dustjacket ; When Celestine Sibley died in August 1999 hundreds of thousands of her fans mourned for weeks and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution celebrated her life with daily coverage and a special 24-page supplement of which over 1.5 million copies were published. There is no one more perfect to encapsulate the life and memory of the deeply loved novelist memoirist and widely syndicated columnist Celestine Sibley than her granddaughter Celestine Sibley Fleming. Celestine Sibley wrote extensively about her granddaughter over the years -- and vice-versa -- and they shared a very close bond. Featuring Fleming's memories about her grandmother in terms of her life both as a public figure and family matriarch together with tales from her grandmother's garden and kitchen and a collection of family photographs Celestine Sibley is a much-needed final word on her life. In the words of Sibley Fleming: "The book is about the inheritance left to me by my grandmother not about diamond tiaras or strings of pearls but instead a look at the richness of life the miracle of relationships and the wisdom that comes from greeting every day with and open mind and sense of humor like only my grandmother could. 'Tine taught me how to see life". At last Celestine Sibley fans everywhere are offered a rare and affectionate look into the soul of Celestine Sibley. ; Celestine Sibley Fleming is a columnist writer and editor whose work appears regularly in national magazines and regional newspapers. She is the author of several books including How to Rock Your Baby. Out of options she reluctantly accepts her father's offer to help refurbish Birdsong the old family place he recently inherited in Guthrie Georgia. All it will take he tells her is a little paint and some TLC to turn the fading Victorian mansion into a real-estate cash cow. But when she arrives Dempsey realizes that "Bird Droppings" would more aptly describe the moldering Pepto Bismol-pink dump with duct-taped windows and a driveway full of junk. There's also a murderously grumpy old lady one of Dempsey's distant relations who has claimed squatter's rights and isn't moving out. Ever. Everyone in Guthrie seems to know Dempsey's business from a smooth-talking real-estate agent to a cute lawyer who owns the local paper. As if that's not bad enough pesky FBI agents keep showing up on her doorstep looking for information about her ex-boss. All Dempsey can do is roll up her sleeves and get to work. Before long what started as a job of necessity somehow becomes a labor of love and ultimately a journey that takes her to a place she never expected-back home. --Source: Publisher ; Mary Kay Andrews was born Kathy Hogan Trocheck on July 27 1954 in St. Petersburg Florida. Into the valley of the bug -- Ward A-1 Room 101 -- "Hooray for Colonel Spurling" -- The countdown -- Zero hour zero -- So may he rest -- Epilogue : The limited assembly ; The Last Days of Patton is the story of General George S. Patton's final battle -- the Allied victory over Germany in the spring of 1945 and the ensuing nine months of his life with particular attention given to his fatal automobile accident in December. Ladislas Fargo chronicles the postwar adventures and misfortunes that ultimately deprived Patton of the glory and victory he had earned in his career as military strategist leader and hero. - Jacket flap. ; "It would be as hard to give up all thought of being a soldier as it would be to stop breathing" wrote George S. Patton in October 1945; "The great tragedy of my life was that I survived the last battle." But Patton would not see the year out: in December he would die as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Germany. His unexpected death sent shock waves through the American and Russian commands. It seemed plausible that America's greatest general may have been a victim of foul play. In the seven months following the German surrender Patton had openly and provocatively criticized the Soviet Union and appeared to have transformed from a staunch anti-Nazi to a Nazi sympathizer. The Last Days of Patton by Ladislas Farago a follow-up to his bestselling Patton: Ordeal and Triumph attempts to reconstruct the last months of Patton's life in order to determine if the general did indeed try to provoke a war with the Soviet Union and whether he failed to sufficiently de-Nazify the area of Germany under his jurisdiction. Farago also investigates the possibility of a conspiracy to murder Patton and reveals the role other prominent men including Eisenhower Montgomery Marshall and MacArthur had in censuring and ultimately removing Patton from active service. The Last Days of Patton. is the story of the general's final battle--a professional soldier caught up in the changing politics of the emerging Cold War and new reality of the atomic age." ; FINE/FINE

McGraw-Hill, New York, ©1981 hardcover‎

In May 2012 he was sworn in as the 29th Chief Justice serving as leader of Georgia's judicial system until Dec. 31 2012 ; In 323 B.C.E having conquered Persia Alexander the Great set his sights on Arabia then suddenly succumbed to a strange fever. Locating his final resting place-unknown to this day-remains a tantalizing goal for both archaeologists and treasure hunters. Now the quest for this coveted prize is about to heat up. And Cotton Malone-former U.S. Justice Department agent turned rare-book dealer-will be drawn into an intense geopolitical chess game. After narrowly escaping incineration in a devastating fire that consumes a Danish museum Cotton learns from his friend the beguiling adventurer Cassiopeia Vitt that the blaze was neither an accident nor an isolated incident. As part of campaign of arson intended to mask a far more diabolical design buildings across Europe are being devoured by infernos of unnatural strength. And from the ashes of the U.S.S.R. a new nation has arisen: Former Soviet republics have consolidated into the Central Asian Federation. At its helm is Supreme Minister Irina Zovastina a cunning despot with a talent for politics a taste for blood sport and the single-minded desire to surpass Alexander the Great as history's ultimate conqueror. Backed by a secret cabal of powerbrokers the Federation has amassed a harrowing arsenal of biological weapons. Equipped with the hellish power to decimate other nations at will only one thing keeps Zovastina from setting in motion her death march of domination: a miraculous healing serum kept secret by an ancient puzzle and buried with the mummified remains of Alexander the Great-in a tomb lost to the ages for more than 1500 years. Together Cotton and Cassiopeia must outrun and outthink the forces alliedagainst them. Their perilous quest will take them to the shores of Denmark deep into the venerated monuments of Venice and finally high inside the desolate Pamir mountains of Central Asia to unravel a riddle whose solution could destroy or save millions of people-depending on who finds the lost tomb first. ; FINE/FINE

Ballantine Books, New York, ©2007 hardcover‎

‎The Alexandria Link: A Novel ; A conversation with Steve Berry ;‎

‎Ballantine Books New York ©2007 2007. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Soft cover. Fine/No Jacket. ARC Advanced Reading Copy ; color pictorial stiff paper wrappers ; 8; 462 4 pp. ; ISBN 9780345485755 9780345485762 9780345497246 0345485750 0345485769 0345497244 OCLC 73515551; "These are unrevised proofs" ; SIGNED by Steve Barry on the title page ; Cotton Malone retired from the high-risk world of elite operatives for the U.S. Justice Department to lead the low-key life of a rare-book dealer. But his quiet existence is shattered when he receives an anonymous e-mail: "You have something I want. You' re the only person on earth who knows where to find it. Go get it. You have 72 hours. If I don't hear from you you will be childless." His horrified ex-wife confirms that the threat is real: Their teenage son has been kidnapped. When Malone's Copenhagen bookshop is burned to the ground it becomes brutally clear that those responsible will stop at nothing to get what they want. And what they want is nothing less than the lost Library of Alexandria. A cradle of ideas-historical philosophical literary scientific and religious-the Library of Alexandria was unparalleled in the world. But fifteen hundred years ago it vanished into the mists of myth and legend-its vast bounty of wisdom coveted ever since by scholars fortune hunters and those who believe its untold secrets hold the key to ultimate power. Now a cartel of wealthy international moguls bent on altering the course of history is desperate to breach the library's hallowed halls-and only Malone possesses the information they need to succeed. At stake is an explosive ancient document with the potential not only to change the destiny of the Middle East but to shake the world's three major religions to their very foundations. Pursued by a lethal mercenary Malone crosses the globe in search of answers. His quest will lead him to England and Portugal even to the highest levels of American government-and the shattering outcome deep in the Sinai desert will have worldwide repercussions. ; scarce advanced reading copy ; FINE

Ballantine Books, New York, ©2007 paperback‎
