Evolutionary Chess Set
1975. Folk art chess set and table. This non-traditional chess set is based on the theory of evolution with dinosaurs facing off against mammals. The field is alternating squares of brown earth and green & blue ponds. The pawns on each side grow through the early evolutionary stages: the dinosaurs starts as a simple DNA double helix which progresses through aquatic creatures and early amphibians; the mammalian side begins with a small rat-like creature that ultimately evolves into early man. The larger pieces are in pairs though each member of the pair is posed differently so that the set comprises sixteen unique pieces. The dinosaurs are represented by stegosaurs pterodactyls and something similar to an iguanodon. The king and queen are appropriately a pair of tyrannosaurus rex; the queen wears a pretty necklace of shark teeth. Opposite are rhinoceroses saber-tooth tigers mammoths and a pair of modern humans as king and queen. The queen is a smartly dressed woman from Tokyo and the king is a farmer named Butch who bears an unfortunate resemblance to his pre-historic cousin in the row of pawns. The entire piece is a free-standing table with the board resting on four legs. Around the edges of the board a continuous landscape shows the gradual progression of life from the chaotic cosmos through to the modern day. The four legs of the table are painted in similar scenes with one leg each for early aquatic life dinosaurs early mammals and modern day. The Tokyo theme may point to a date of creation in the range of 1965-1975 the height of the Japanese Kaiju monster films craze. Pre-historic creatures though magnified to a gargantuan scale were common in these monster films and their size was often the result of science gone wrong. The top of the chessboard measures 33 inches square the base 36 inches square and it stands 34 inches tall not including pieces. A fascinating unique piece. unknown

Le Joaillier Léon Devos
Bruxelles: Ets. Guy Onkelinx 1924. Devos Léon. Small quarto. 40pp. Illustrated with ten color plates of Art Deco jewelry design and six allegorical color plates a full-page black & white unattributed image and a small vignette by American artist Lawrence Sterne Stevens. The jewelry designs by Devos an important Belgian jeweler are elegantly styled to the Art Deco aesthetic and expertly rendered in the plates. The designs are divided into five sections by type of gem-diamonds pearls sapphires rubies and emeralds-and each section is prefaced with an illustration by Sterne Stevens of exotic foreign locales and beautiful women and men draped in jewels. Sterne Stevens was born in Michigan and worked as a cartoonist while taking night classes at the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts. By chance Alphonse Mucha visited his former teacher at the school and was introduced to Sterne Stevens; with Mucha's encouragement Sterne Stevens moved to Belgium in 1910 to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Following the war he worked as a designer and illustrator from 1924 to 1937 before returning to the States to work as a freelance illustrator. This trade catalogue then would have been one of his earliest works during this period of production in Belgium. Bound in brown wrappers with decorative cord at the spine. The front is enhanced by an embossed design printed in dark brown and light blue. Typed letter on the company stationary signed by Devos laid in. The letter which would accompany the catalogue invites the recipient to visit the showroom at 63 rue de Namur where they could find "un assortiment vraiment unique." Fine. Ets. Guy Onkelinx unknown

Amish Love: Adventures in a Puritan Cult
Florence Italy: Michael Angelino Press 1930. Blaine Mahlon. Small quarto. 264pp. With woodcut cover illustration and five erotic half-tone reproductions of paintings by Mahlon Blaine. This book is part of the swelling trend in the 1930s for "privately printed" erotic books which would often be published by anonymous or pseudonymous authors and illustrators and printed with fake publication information in order to protect the creators from public backlash. This erotic tale supposedly taken from a diary of an Amish woman telling of the scandalous sexual exploits of her mother is one such work. Blaine's stirring illustrations bring life to the text combining sensual lines with cunning details. Both the cover in Blaine's bold woodcut style and the illustrations with their broad washes over sketched lines have a raw quality to them a sense of hurried energy that echoes the excitement of the reader. Near fine in wrappers with spotting crease to front cover and scratch to back. Blaine whose most respectable and recognizable works were illustrations for Edgar Rice Burroughs John Steinbeck and the New Yorker published over two thousand drawings between 1917 and his death in 1969. An interesting work from this underappreciated master. Trenary "Mahlon Blaine One-Eyed Visionary" p. 59. Michael Angelino Press unknown

England 1835. 4pp. 8ff. Original manuscript set of costume overlays depicting the evolution of a "Youth just ceased to grow" into a "Dandy quite complete." The overlays are hand-drawn and colored in a caricaturish style with a hole to show the Youth's face below and they are accompanied by a four-page hand-written account in rhyme of the Youth's transformation which builds on itself with each additional article of clothing. The hourglass shape of the Youth's frock coat and his pantaloons date the set to the period between 1825 and 1835. 26 Etchings by Shelly Fink
Alford MA 1962. Fink Sheldon. Small quarto. 28ff. One of forty copies. Etched title page and twenty-six fine etchings by Fink ranging thematically from portraits to botany to insects. Many of Fink's etchings have a decidedly Baskinesque aesthetic but Fink's circle centered primarily in New York where he was friendly with Jack Levine and Raphael Soyer. For this collection Fink commissioned Royall Moore to create paper with a high linen count and this was the subject of a Popular Mechanics article in 1965. Moore who was described in the article as an "inventive Yankee" was a carpenter by trade and made all the equipment himself. The binding for this edition was executed by Arno Werner who bound it in full deerskin with a hubbed spine and decorations printed in black on the upper cover and spine. Werner also presumably made the marbled endpapers which also decorate the deerskin-backed folding case. Some minor wear to extremities of the box otherwise fine and bright. unknown

Strouse Norman H.
The Passionate Pirate
North Hills: Bird & Bull Press 1964. Octavo. 91pp. One of 200 copies. A biography on the life and work of Thomas Bird Mosher the remarkable New England publisher and literary pirate. The Passionate Pirate is one of Henry Morris's earlier titles. In making it he was plagued with both papermaking and printing problems since he had recently acquired a new papermaking beater and a new printing press. The first bindings on the books were disastrous and the entire edition had to be rebound. This copy is inscribed by Morris "For my good friend Remy Green" and dated 11/15/64. Remy John Barcham Green worked for and later ran J. Barcham Green Ltd. which operated the Hayle Mill in Kent England. Morris was in frequent contact with Remy and his father Jack John Barcham Green II when he first began his papermaking journey in the 1950s. Morris says of his initial correspondence with Jack Green: "I really sent a barrage of questions and I must say that Mr. Green was extremely kind as he not only answered them all but to this day continues to give help and advice." When Jack was ill in August 1957 Remy replied to one of Morris's letters and afterwards they became "good friends" meeting several times when Remy visited the United States. In addition to the inscription this copy has a J. Barcham Green Ltd. stamp to the front flyleaf dated 1 December 1964. One of the Press's more desirable pieces with an interesting association considering the issues Morris had in creating it. A fine copy in morocco-backed decorated paper boards housed in a drop-back box with leather spine label. Bird & Bull Bibliography A5; Omnibus pp. 38 43-49. Bird & Bull Press unknown

Coptographische Groepon
Amsterdam: Wed. G. A. Diederichs en Zoon and Mindermann 1820. Four paper packets with thirty-six paper figures. The figures are cut from laid paper so that a lantern shining through the cut-out portions would project the image onto a wall or sheet. The largest packet containing six sheets was professionally produced and contains intricate multi-figure images of chess players musicians a school master with his pupils Don Quixote and Sancho Panza dames at a tea table and a noble family. The other three packets containing twelve twelve and six figures respectively look to have been homemade supplements to the original set. These additional figures are very finely done and include a variety of historic figures such as Queen Elizabeth I the prophet Muhammad Diogenes Homer Minerva the Apostles Paul and Peter and King Francis I of France. The set also includes a few generic figures from different professions and ethnicities. Each is carefully numbered and labeled and a handwritten list is included in each packet. Shadow theater which has a long tradition in the East did not gain popularity in Europe until the eighteenth century. This set of cut paper silhouettes is an extremely rare early example of this form of European entertainment. A very interesting and unique set complete and in fine condition. Wed. G. A. Diederichs en Zoon and Mindermann unknown
