The Book of Jonah. Together with: thirteen wood engravings by David Jones for the book
London: Clover Hill Editions 1979. Jones David. Quarto. 19pp. One of 100 copies printed on Barcham Green's RWS handmade paper by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press with an extra set of the engravings on japon. Illustrated with thirteen wood engravings by David Jones several of which frame the text. Jones was encouraged by Eric Gill to learn the craft of wood engraving and although one can see the influence of Gill's work in these illustrations they also reveal a sense of darkness and tumult that is distinctly Jones's own. The first edition of this book was published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1926; the new edition was printed using Jones's original blocks. The engravings in this portfolio are untrimmed and therefore slightly larger than the prints included in those suites. Light fading to spine and head of slipcase else fine in publisher's binding of cloth-backed patterned paper-covered boards. Engravings fine in paper pocket formed out of the rear paste-down. Housed in green cloth slipcase. Cleverdon 9. Clover Hill Editions unknown

Gorey Edward
Q.R.V.
Boston: Anne & David Bromer 1989. Claes Edgard. 32ff. From an edition of 400 copies this is one of 110 hand-colored in metallic casein by the artist and signed by him below the colophon. This Gorey rarity is bound in a one-of-a-kind designer binding by Brother Edgard Claes a binder known for his technical proficiency and progressive style. With twenty-nine illustrations accompanied by rhyming couplets Q.R.V is an homage to Isaac Watts and the text is obscurely akin to "Divine Songs for Children." According to Gorey Q.R.V. is the nothing that cures everything: "When someone's tongue has reached your lung it's time to use your knee; Regain your air of savoir faire by quaffing Q.R.V." Bound with Claes' characteristic polycarbonate boards and airbrushed automotive paint with a snakeskin spine. The boards present a cubist rendering of "Q.R.V." fracturing it into squares of differing blues and reinforcing the elusiveness of the true meaning of the term. Housed in a metal slipcase that features a die cut "Q.R.V." on both sides. Claes has been a monk of the Crosier order since 1976 and the seal of that order along with Claes' signature appear on the rear endpapers. An innovative and modern binding for a mysterious work. Bromer pp. 56-58. 1 1/2 by 1 7/8; 37x44mm. Anne & David Bromer unknown

Bradbury Ray
Fahrenheit 451
NY: Ballantine Books 1953. Mugnaini Joseph. First Edition first hardbound trade issue. Laid in to this copy is Joseph Mugnaini's original preliminary cover art for the novel which Bradbury personally owned. The watercolor and sketch work features the same elongated human figure dressed in newspapers and surrounded by flames. Mugnaini collaborated with Bradbury to interpret and illustrate the covers and interiors of many of his works including The October Country A Medicine for Melancholy and Twice 22. This however is his most famous piece and this original artwork is entirely unique. Fahrenheit 451 has long been regarded as a high point of the science fiction genre. Written in the peak of McCarthyism it grapples with the consequences of censorship and the destruction of knowledge. The novel has been celebrated since its first publication. In 1954 it won the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature and in 2004 it was granted a 1954 Retro Hugo Award one of only four Retro Hugos ever given. Bound in red cloth with yelow stamping Currey binding D with minimal edgewear. Both volume and dust jacket in very fine condition. Barron 3-31; Pringle 8. Ballantine Books unknown

Williamson Mary E.
The Story of Annabelle Ant
N.p. n.d. Luckett Mary K. Small quarto. ii 36pp. This is a unique pre-production edition of Mary E. Williamson's children's book which seems to never have been published. The text is handwritten in black ink and the illustrations are hand-drawn and colored with ink and paint all on boards. The story follows an old hardworking ant who wins a contest to craft the queen ant's wedding dress. While the illustrator Mary K. Luckett is largely unknown Williamson was involved in the world of publishing throughout her many careers. After serving as a pilot in the WASP Women Air Force Service Pilots program in World War II she acted as the public relations director for the Kansas City Tuberculosis Society and taught at the Department of Speech and Mass Communication at the University of Nebraska Omaha where she also acted as the Dean for the College of Fine Arts University Relations Director and eventually Chair of the Communications Department. She was also an associate of the Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press Vice President of Nebraska Cable Television and a constant advocate for Nebraska small businesses. In 2010 she was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for her service as a WASP. The book though apparently never published reflects Williamson's values of entrepreneurship women's empowerment and the promotion of local voices. Bound in black leatherette over boards with an illustrated title panel inset on the front cover. General wear at outer hinges corners bumped occasional tears to inner boards some flaking to acrylic paint pages 27 and 29 partially detached and pages 7 and 9 completely detached. Very good with Williamson's own typescript and handwritten comments laid in. unknown

Collection of Christmas cards by Georgie Gaskin
1905. Gaskin Georgie. A collection of nine color Christmas cards for the years 1897 through 1905 designed by Georgie Gaskin for Laurence W. Hodson and his family. The cards feature delicate vining borders intertwined with banners that extend the Christmas greeting for that year. The subjects of the cards include the Hodson children at play and nativity scenes and one contains a calendar for the year 1905. Five of the cards are folded and include printed Christmas greetings hand-lettered by Gaskin. Georgie Gaskin and her husband Arthur were heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. Though Arthur Gaskin illustrated books including The Shepheard's Calendar by the Kelmscott Press the couple was more well known for their elegant handmade jewelry. Georgie designed the jewelry which often featured elaborate flowering vines a characteristic that can readily be seen in these Christmas card designs. The cards were previously held in mats and show some mat burn to the front side with adhesive on the back; a few have also been trimmed along one or more edges; otherwise the items in this collection are in near fine condition. unknown

Akera Kankou
Sanjuurokkai kyouka awase shiohi no tsuto Gifts of the Ebb Tide: A Poetry Contest on the Thirty-six Shells
Edo: Tsutaya Juzaburou 1789. Utamaro Kitagawa. Small quarto. 20pp. First edition. Illustrated with eight spreads by Kitagawa Utamaro. This anthology of thirty-six short poems presented in the style of a traditional poetry contest was written by members of the Yaegaki Circle after Akera Kankou and several members of the Circle were inspired by shells during a walk on the beach at Shinagawa. Utamaro's opening illustration is clearly drawn from this showing families walking along the shore and gathering shells at Shinagawa just as the poets did. The poetry is set above exquisitely detailed renderings of the shells examined in the accompanying verse. The closing scene shows a group of women gathering to play a matching game using painted clam shells. Utamaro's skillful illustrations are highlighted with mica blind embossing mother-of-pearl and gold and printed on thick hosho paper. Roger S. Keyes used images from Gifts of the Ebb Tide on the dust wrapper of Ehon The Artist and the Book in Japan his historic exhibit of Japanese illustrated books at The New York Public Library in 2006. Keyes illustrated every page of Utamaro's masterpiece in his book and began his description of it with these words: "One of the most beautiful books ever published began with a visit to the seaside." Keyes continued in his discussion of the first edition: "The first edition of Gifts of the Ebb Tide was a triumph. No one had ever drawn shells with more authority more sensitivity more painstaking detail. No printers had used such a variety of textures and none since the days of Harunobu had employed such a range of colorants or produced such an array of special effects." The second edition is what Keyes illustrated in his text. It is a matter of taste as to which edition one prefers. The second has stronger color in the woodcuts. The first has the golden screen behind the group of women. Bound in hand-painted indigo paper with expected wear and fading. Spine with Japanese cloth in what appears to be an early repair. Impressive provenance with this copy being owned by Edmond de Goncourt renowned collector of Utamaro's work and author of a monograph on the artist. De Goncourt wrote in red at the margin of the opening endpaper: "Exemplaire de la plus grande beautre comme triage." This copy is exceptional and very rare. Roger S. Keyes Ehon: The Artist and the Book in Japan pp. 112-123. Tsutaya Juzaburou unknown

Muller Marga
Das Christkind Kommt: Ein Weihnachtsbuch fur Kinder von 1-80 Jahren
Munich: Josef Muller 1930. Madelener Josef. Quarto. 45pp. This book recounts the story of the Christkind the "Christ child" who in Germany takes on a similar role to Santa Claus giving out Christmas gifts to children without being seen. The Christkind figure originated as part of the Reformation of the 16th century acting as a Protestant equivalent to the Catholic Saint Nicholas. Over time however the lines have blurred and now the distinction is more regional than religious. The Christkind is particularly predominant in Austria South and West Germany and the German-speaking Switzerland among other areas. This book has been illustrated with black-and-white images integrated into the text and with 10 full-color plates. The illustrator Josef Madelener is especially known for his 1935 art card series that included the image "The Mountain Spirit" which J.R.R. Tolkien directly cites as the origin of the wizard Gandalf. The images in this volume feature the same Romantic and fantastical lustre as the Christkind is accompanied by animals and angels through forests and towns. Bound in red paper-covered boards with gold-stamping and a Madelener color illustration on the front. Rubbing and minor staining to extremities paper cover has two-inch slice at back else near fine. ABC Painting
Tallarico Tony. Original artwork signed by the artist Tony Tallarico. Depicting the letters A B and C against an orange background this vibrant piece juxtaposes the realistic style of the letter examples an apple a ball and a cat with the playful style of the letters themselves which have been enhanced by black outlines painted onto the inside of the frame glass. The letters evoke the typography of comic books; this is no accident since Tallarico spent much of his career as a comic book artist. He is particularly known for being the artist behind "The Great Society" comic book published by Parallax which satirized the administration of Lyndon Baines Johnson and the short-lived series "Lobo" of Dell Comics the first comic with an African-American to headline his or her own series. Tallarico later went on to illustrate hundreds of children's books including the Where Are They series. Fine in a gilt frame. Frame measures 25 1/2 by 23 in.; 648x584mm. unknown

Ehon mushi erami
Edo: Tsutaya Jusaburo 1823. Kitagawa Utamaro. 19 15pp. Likely third edition. Masterfully illustrated with fifteen prints by Kitagawa Utamaro softly colored and finely detailed showing insects and reptiles tucked among lush plants. Each spread is accompanied by a pair of flowing 31-syllable kyoka poems humorously relating the sentiments of love to insects. In the preface the compiler Yadoya no Meshimori relates the "origin" of the poems: he and his companions had gone down to the River Sumida one night to listen to the insects and had engaged in a poetry-writing competition. However Asano and Clark posit "It is more likely that the whole project was proposed and carried out from start to finish by the publisher Tsutaya Jusaburo himself taking the central role." A publisher's note in the back solicits kyoka submissions for three future volumes on the themes of birds fish and animals. Momochidori Kyoka is on birds and Shiohi no Tsuto is on seashells rather than fish; the volume on animals was never published. Although this is the earliest of Utamaro's nature studies it is by no means the least skillful. Hillier accurately describes the marriage of Utamaro's artistry with the technical precision of the printing: "the perfection of the detail the fineness of the lines the range of colour the gradation of tone the addition of mica to the wings of insects all reach a degree of refinement that has never been excelled." This edition of the work is bound in stenciled blue covers decorated in gold with pine trees and clouds and is missing the postscript by Toriyama Seiken. Unlike the edition with woodblock printed covers this edition has horizontal chain lines. Examples of this edition can be found in the Rijksprentenkabinet of Rijksmuseum Amsterdam the Kunsthalle Bremen Collection and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Volume one has a broken string and one short worm track professionally filled in and both volumes show some soil and wear to the covers although the interior is bright and clean. Housed together in four-flap chitsu of green cloth with a blank gold label hinges weak and missing one clasp. Hillier pp. 409-414; Ryerson pp. 220-221; Rijksprentenkabinet Catalogue of the Collection of Japanese Prints Part II no. 85; Kunsthalle Bremen p. 224; Asano and Clark 463. Tsutaya Jusaburo unknown

Kiho Gafu
Kyoto 1827. Kawamura Kiho. Small quarto. 2 31 4ff. Illustrated with thirty color wood-block prints by ukiyo-e artist Kawamura Kiho. Kiho who was also known as Shun Goitsu and Chikurikwan was the adopted son and acknowledged disciple of artist Kawamura Bumpo. Both Bumpo and Kiho are stylistically similar to the the Shijo school which preferred gray and black lines highlighted with pale blushes of color over the more vivid ukiyo-e style popular at the end of the eighteenth century. These light colors are perfectly suited to this sensitive collection most of which illustrate simple and quiet scenes from everyday life. Farmers and fisherman are interspersed with portraits of plants and animals. Of especial interest are three prints of people reading-a farmer bundling rice while reading a book laid open on the ground a bearded man huddling beneath a lamp and man lounging beneath a full moon. The images are preceded by a four-page preface and one page of calligraphy and followed by a closing note eight pages of advertisements and a colophon. In the original blue covers patterned with waves of mica with a title label to the upper cover. Overall light soiling and wear to covers with minor worming to inside covers and last two leaves; red stamp to lower right and small loss to fore-edge of front cover; unobtrusive ink inscription to inside front cover; re-sewn with new thread and housed in new chitsu. A beautiful book by an under-appreciated artist. Ryerson p. 388; Brown p. 105; Mitchell pp. 360-361 Example A; Franklin pp. 75 & 79. unknown

Gill Eric
An Essay on Typography
London: Sheed & Ward 1931. Gill Eric. Octavo. iv 121 pp. First edition. One of 500 copies signed by Eric Gill and Rene Hague and printed by Hague & Gill. This is a presentation copy inscribed on the colophon. Illustrated with twenty-five figures including ten type specimens and four illustrations from wood engravings by Gill. According to the bibliography there were twenty-five copies specially bound by Donald Attwater in full Welsh sheepskin tooled in blind. The present copy appears to be one of those specially bound copies as it is in full sheepskin with blind tooling though with very subtle differences from the bibliographical description. Evan Gill notes for instance that "the blind tooling on front and back was not uniform in design" and that on the present copy is uniform. He also notes that GILL TYPOGRAPHY reads downward on the spine where here the author's name is not on the spine. Slight fading to spine very minor bump to spine head minute scuffs to soft leather as is typical of sheepskin. A fine copy nevertheless of a seminal work on typography in a rarely seen binding state. Willoughby Edwin Eliott
The Making of the King James Bible: A Monograph with Comparisons from the Bishops Bible and the Manuscript Annotations of 1602 with an Original Leaf from the Great "She" Bible of 1611
Los Angeles: Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop 1956. Folio. 31pp. One of 290 copies printed at the Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop. Though this title usually only includes one original leaf this particular copy contains two one from the Book of Proverbs and another from the Book of Matthew both with two woodcut initials. The "Great She Bible of 1611" is really a corrected version printed in 1613 of the "Great He Bible of 1611" in which a typographic error results in the Book of Ruth having a "he" referring to Boaz placed where a "she" referring to Ruth should be. The "Great She Bible" is thus the second authorized printing of the King James Bible with the "He" version being the first. Willoughby's comprehensive monograph on the King James Bible discusses the factors that impacted the first printing and is illustrated with facsimiles from the 1611 edition. Leaves show some foxing and minor wear to edges else fine. Bound in quarter cloth and printed boards in an acetate wrapper. Some rubbing to corners and mark on front board. Near fine overall. Bookplate. BCC #45; Chalmers 113 p. 84. Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop unknown
