Dwiggins W. A.
Photograph of a Dwiggins marionette: F. Morton Smith
Hingham MA 1930. Dwiggins W. A. A black & white photograph of a marionette made by W. A. Dwiggins measuring 10 by 10 1/2 inches. The marionette is a likeness of F. Morton Smith a Boston lawyer who was married to Margaret Coatsworth the sister of the children's book author and illustrator Elizabeth Coatsworth. Both Margaret Coatsworth and F. Morton Smith were friends of Dwiggins and became involved with his theatrical productions: Smith is listed as a puppeteer on the program for Dwiggins's first production "The Mystery of the Blind Beggarman or Billy Brown's Bravery" which was performed for two seasons in 1933-1934. In Smith's marionette likeness Dwiggins perfectly captures his friend's bushy eyebrows and prominent nose and depicts him wearing a jacket and bow tie and smoking a cigarette. A noted book and type designer illustrator calligrapher and writer in his professional life Dwiggins began making marionettes as a hobby in 1928 and continued for twelve years. He took on the role of director carved the figures and designed the stages scenery costumes and lighting for his productions. Everything was done with the same perfectionism that defined all of his work. Dwiggins made marionettes of himself and several of his friends. Although it does not appear that these marionettes were ever characters in a formal play photographs taken by friends of Dwiggins show the marionettes interacting onstage. Photograph is mounted on board and protected by a piece of mylar. Indentation and slight staining from a paperclip to left margin slight bumping to corners and photograph has a slight warp to edges else a very nice image of one of Dwiggins's remarkable marionettes. With a fore-edge painting by the "double-line" painter depicting the pastoral village of Lissoy where Oliver Goldsmith spent his youth standing in for the pseudonymous town of Auburn in Goldsmith's poem "The Deserted Village." The Bewick brothers were the leaders of the development of the art of wood engraving at the end of the eighteenth century. In particular Thomas Bewick extended the range of the art by creating "a new conception of the black and white picture." These books were splendidly printed by Bulmer at his Shakespeare Printing Office. In The Bewick Collector Thomas Hugo describes Poems by Goldsmith and Parnell as "A magnificent result of the efforts of the wood engraver type-founder papermaker and printer" and writes that The Chase "contains the best specimens of John Bewick's abilities as a designer." Bound in contemporary red straight-grain morocco with double-fillet border and a wide double-fillet frame with semi-circle insertions. This special presentation of the two books was done for Baronet Sir John James Smith whose gilt armorial coat-of-arms is stamped in the center of the covers. Livers des Artistes
Fairfax CA: Jungle Garden Press 1994. Dern Carl & Marie. Quarto. 18ff. One of only three copies signed by the illustrator Carl Dern and the printer Marie Dern. A portfolio of eight pieces of original art by Carl Dern mixing printing watercolors pen drawings and collage. Playing with the concept of the livre d'artiste or artist's book the tongue-in-cheek illustrations interpret the work of eight famous modern artists incorporating a representation of a human liver into the artists' works. For Georgia O'Keefe the liver wears a pair of antlers and floats in the sky over a desert landscape and in an interpretation of Georges Seurat the liver becomes the exaggerated bustle of a women with a parasol. For Kurt Schwitters the liver is decorated with a collage of found objects. Also included are parodies of Joan Miró René Magritte Eva Hesse Frida Kahlo and Joseph Beuys. Each illustration is preceded by a page bearing the name of the artist letterpress printed by Marie Dern. A copy of this book was featured in the 2002 exhibition "Revealing the Mysteries: The Development of the Artist's Book in the Bay Area" at the San Francisco Center for the Book. The loose sheets are housed in a purple clamshell box designed by Dominic Riley. In a Dadaist touch a textured liver-shaped piece of metal is laid in and attached to the box on a piece of string is a small plastic figurine of a baby. Barnett P. Neville
Figure-Prints of Japan
Sydney Australia: Beacon Press 1948. Folio. 53pp. One of forty deluxe copies signed by the author. A lovely production illustrated with thirty-six color plates. The plates are genuine prints: beautifully made modern reproductions of the originals done in Japan. The text traces the rise and fall of the Ukiyo-ye school of Japanese wood-engraving from its origins with the artist Moronobu in the seventeenth century to its decline under Western influences in the nineteenth century. Ukiyo-e is translated as "pictures of the floating world" and prints of this genre depict the carefree pleasures of life: a world of entertainment and beauty beyond mundane everyday concerns. Ukiyo-ye challenged the traditional aristocratic and courtly schools of painting and the plates depict people of the lower classes including actors and courtesans the finely-dressed beauties of the city and tea-house waitresses. Artists of this school featured in Barnett's work include Utamaro Shunsho Harunobu and Kiyonaga. Sumptuously bound in silk brocade backed in gilt-ruled vellum. The endpapers bear prints of a woman carrying an umbrella surrounded by borders of red maple leaves. A few very faint spots of offsetting from the plates else a very fine copy. With the armorial bookplate of Bernard Gore Brett and a small unobtrusive bookseller's label to front paste-down. An enchanting introduction to the art form. Beacon Press unknown

The design for the covers is taken directly from the decorative endsheets which show a web pattern made with India ink and thread. Paz Octavio
The Word
San Francisco 2010. Ingmire Thomas. Quarto. 10ff. Original calligraphic manuscript by Ingmire of the text from a section of Paz's poem "Blanco." This poem which was published in 1967 has been linked to Paz's time in India and it can be read as a figurative exploration of Indian religious philosophy. "The spirit is an invention of the body/ The body is an invention of the world/ The world is an invention of the spirit" all of which is rooted in the Word which also harkens back to the Logos at the beginning of the Gospel of John. In treating this text Ingmire has envisioned the first section of the poem as a text that is revealed from an abstract drawing on the facing page as if emerging from the blotting of the drying ink. This treatment reaches its climax in the center spread where the text is written in alternating lines of black and raised gold against a marbled background and what appeared as strange and jarring is suddenly transformed into something harmonious and striking. A bold interpretation by Ingmire whose work has balanced traditional calligraphy with modern innovative techniques and an astounding ability in his use of gold script. Bound in heavy handmade paper wrappers with the title in vertical blocks on the front cover. Housed in a complimentary folding case by the Foolscap Press. Extremely fine. unknown

The Four Seasons. An Impression of Spring Summer Autumn and Winter: a Landscape Panorama
London: Gogmagog Press 1965. Cox Morris. Four small octavo volumes each 26pp. One of 100 copies printed on Hosho paper signed by the artist/printer Morris Cox. Each volume contains a colorful panorama of nature printed from heavily textured blocks which give the offset prints an embossed effect. The changing seasons appear in a flowing image with delicate natural forms and subtle hues. Colin Franklin says that the group is "reckoned as the peak of his achievement as a printer." The texture of the prints derives from the unusual printing blocks used to create them. Cox mounted sheets of cardboard onto plywood and layered them with gesso next adding materials from nature like seeds leaves and twigs. These natural elements were then varnished for strength. Printing these unconventional blocks required an inventive approach. According to David Chambers "These were printed by using the office copying press and then screwing this down several times as the blocks were drawn through on a long carriage." Slight spine slant on Autumn light uniform toning else a fine set in monotype-printed pictorial boards and original acetate wrappers. Considered to be the magnum opus of the Press. Shakespeare William
The Works of William Shakespeare in Ten Volumes
Stratford-on-Avon: Shakespeare Head Press 1906. Ten quarto volumes. This is one of only twelve sets printed on pure vellum with a frontispiece illustration in each volume. It represents a monumental undertaking which took four years to complete and consumed about 250 sheets for each of the twelve copies printed on vellum. The Shakespeare Head Press was founded by A. H. Bullen who had the idea of printing the complete works of Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon as the result of a dream in which he was presented with a set of Shakespeare's works while visiting the town. This is the first edition of Shakespeare to have been published in Stratford and the first major publication of the Press. Although other Shakespeare Head Press sets printed on vellum regularly appear on the market this Shakespeare set is very difficult to obtain. Volumes I and II are lacking the silk fore-edge ties spine lettering a trifle rubbed on volume VI few volumes with minor wrinkling to spine ends else a fine copy in creamy full limp vellum stamped in gilt. Tomkinson p. 229 Ransom p. 9. Shakespeare Head Press unknown

Chinoiseries / Costumes d'Antan
France / China 1900. Octavo. 22pp. Album of Chinese landscapes in original watercolors facing depictions of women's antique costumes painted on silk interleaved with tissue. "Chinoiserie" refers to European art characterized by imagery of a romanticized China a notion that similarly underpins the genre of costume books which presented foreign fashion through a European lens. It appears that the brightly-colored landscapes in this album were done later than the silk paintings most likely by a Western artist. Included are market scenes depictions of boats on a river and pagodas. These European stylings contrast with the depictions of Chinese fashion opposite them bringing a stark juxtaposition of East and West not often seen in costume books. The delicate paintings of costumes on silk are done in a much more traditional Chinese style. Great attention is paid to details such as the knotted red and green silk cords worn around the women's waists floral hair ornaments and the subtle patterns of their loose-sleeved robes. One woman carries a basket of flowers another poses beside a deer and one is dressed as a warrior with a sword in a jacket and loose trousers tying on her knee guards. The costumes are colored in soft shades of blue pink and green. Very fine in soft gilt-titled white calf with raised bands on the spine blind-tooled with decorative rules. Housed in a flannel-lined box. unknown
