As founding member of the eminent »Devetsil« avant-garde group and major proponent of »Poetism« later nobel-prize winner heavily criticised tendencies of Social Realism in poetry upcoming in the late 1920s and therefore was thrown out of the Czech Communist party in 1929. - Josef Capek's linocut cover design is visualising the title in a simple though effective way. Capek originally has preferred the linocut technique "partly out of necessity: in the postwar shortages linoleum was one of the few cheap materials available." cit. Beeing one of the most important Bulgarian authors and promoters of children’s and youth literature Ran Bosilek produced adaptions of e.g. the »Iliad« »Odyssey« and the »Grimm’s fairy tales« for young readers and translated i.a. Astrid Lindgren. - The 21 tipped-in plates are zincografic reproductions of georgeous multicolour drawings by Ivan Lazarkevich 1895-1963 a Kiev-born ethnic Russian who was educated at the famous Petersburg Art Academy and moved to Bulgaria in 1920 to become a reknown children book illustrator and comic artist. - Cover in parts slightly stained srachted and worn edges and corners slightly bumped title page and colophon page with owner's ink remark inside somewhat finger-stained generally solid copy of this edition. In it I seek to draw a literary analogy between the dichotomy of using modern day digital design tools to create works that are produced on vintage analog equipment. In this story set in a fictional past one of the characters is transported to another dimension in space and time. His attempts to communicate across this gulf are indecipherable to the reader without access to a smartphone. I hope to entice readers into seeing new possibilities for tying two disparate mediums together for a more interactive and unique experience. Many of the pages fold out to give the reader the feeling of discovery and thorough study. Bound in 2015 by Florent Rousseau one of the few European binders with consistent mastery of unique materials. The volume is bound with a fabric spine and glittering covers of industrial plastic resembling chrome with dozens of die-cut squares through which are seen all manner of colors. Eight overlays four on each cover of the same plastic mimic Dorny's illustrations; two extend to the paste-downs on which Rousseau has signed and dated the work. Finished with suede free endpapers and a yellow chemise and slipcase. Square octavo. 15ff. One of 60 copies signed by the author Marcelin Pleynet and the illustrator Bertrand Dorny. The Marlborough Litany
Marlborough & Leominster Herefordshire: Marlborough College Press & Whittington Press 1998. Here an original out-of-series copy of the litany which was printed in 1949 in an edition of seventy copies by the Marlborough College Press has been reinvigorated and repackaged by John Randle of the Whittington Press. Randle who had been one of the younger members working on the project in 1949 has here added a preface by Henry Ball another of the original creators of the litany printed on Batchelor Kelmscott papers. The litany itself is printed in three colors on handmade vellum parchment from Dixon & Roe using an Albion press. Quarto. 12ff. From an edition of sixteen this is one of twelve copies for sale. Bound by James Brockman in vellum-backed paste-paper boards with printed paper label on upper cover. Housed in slipcase. Letter from Randle advertising the publication laid in.
