Spencer Isobel.
WALTER CRANE.
New York: Macmillan 1975. 208 pp 11 1/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "More than any other artist of the time Walter Crane appears at the center of the great surge of interest in the decorative arts in the late nineteenth century. He was the driving force behind the Arts and Crafts movement a children's book illustrator designer of textiles tiles stained glass and ceramics and a painter who enjoyed a reputation on the Continent as the most popular of the Pre-Raphaelites. Long before his name came to be associated with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott as the outstanding artists for the nursery his brightly colored series of Toy Books ensured him a wide reputation. His fame led to commissions for nursery wallpaper and from there to fabrics ceramics mosaic stained glass and gesso relief. As President of the Art Workers' Guild Exhibition Society he was a more strenuous advocate of the Arts and Crafts movement than his friend William Morris and traveled abroad with his work specifically helping the formation of an American Arts and Crafts movement. Crane's early paintings embody the romantic medievalism of Rossetti and Burne-Jones but he soon used poetry and painting as a means to express his growing interest in new philosophical ideas. Ultimately he was converted to socialism - a cause he embraced wholeheartedly becoming a member of the Social Democratic Federation the Fabians and Morris's Socialist League. He gladly made his art servant to his beliefs producing political cartoons and trade union banners. This is the first major study of Crane's life and work to be published since his death in 1915. Isobel Spencer a past lecturer in the history of art at Glasgow College of Art includes in her scholarly study of the man and his work the full range of Crane's many artistic activities." Hamilton James.
WILLIAM HEATH ROBINSON.
London: Pavilion 1992. 151 pp 12 1/8" H. B&w and colour reproductions photographs. "In this first fully illustrated monograph of William Heath Robinson's life and work James Hamilton makes a refreshingly new exploration of the personality of this convivial family man and deeply serious artist. Through fascinating new insights he traces the influences on his art the development of his uniquely individual humorous style and the unexpected path that his career followed: the switch from landscapes to book illustration and early success as illustrator of Poe Cervantes and Hans Andersen; the creation of his engaging character Uncle Lubin his cartoons for magazines and the First World War anti-German satires which earned him an enthusiastic following. Only after he had submitted his illustrations for a 'Complete Works of Shakespeare' in 1922 promptly cancelled did Heath Robinson turn away from literary illustration. Then came the immensely popular books on golf and railways and motoring murals and decorations for a liner gadgets for the Ideal Home Exhibition of 1934 and a wealth of inspired magazine and commercial work. Hamilton rounds off his account of Heath Robinson's life and career with detailed appendices including a chronology of his life an important discussion of his sources comprehensive bibliographies and lists of his exhibitions advertising work and ephemera. Published here for the first time are examples of the recently discovered Shakespeare illustrations." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine. Retan Walter and Risom Ole. Richard Scarry.
THE BUSY BUSY WORLD OF RICHARD SCARRY.
New York: Harry N. Abrams 1997. 159 pp 4to 12" H. Pictorial endpapers profusely illustrated throughout in color and b&w with photographs and reproductions of Scarry's work. "In dozens of books with hundreds and hundreds of illustrations Scarry revealed to kids that the everyday world was a place that could be understood - and that learning was fun. Scarry's 'Best Word Book Ever' for example puts names to everyday objects; 'Busy Busy World' explores geography country by country; and 'What Do People Do All Day' delivers exactly what the title promises. Such a man is worth knowing more about and this first biography presents the debonair humorous charming figure that Scarry was. In words and pictures the book traces his life from his roots in Boston to a post-World War II art school training and a brief career in advertising. Bored with selling products Scarry put himself forward as a children's book illustrator and began turning out pictures for other people's words. Soon he himself was writing texts and eventually he hit upon the magic touch that catapulted him to nearly universal popularity - a menagerie full of animal characters who behaved like humans but with unfailing good humor and grace. Through the personalities of these often mischievous creatures - the ubiquitous Lowly Worm Tinker and Tanker Sergeant Murphy - whom children could identify with but not have to worry about Scarry conceived a parade of books that parents and children alike could pore over for pictures or read time after time. Long before Waldo challenged young eyes to find him in picture books Goldbug was hiding here and there on Scarry's pages. Learning more about the charm of those books and the genius of the man who created them will enlighten and delight any reader of this book." WONDROUS STRANGE: THE WYETH TRADITION - HOWARD PYLE N.C. WYETH ANDREW WYETH JAMES WYETH.
Boston: Bulfinch Press 1998. 168 pp 4to 11 1/4" H. "Swashbuckling romantic mysterious fantastical - all these words can be used to describe the art in this splendid book of 'wondrous strange' paintings by four great American artists. Conceived and entitled by Betsy James Wyeth it focuses on an aspect of American realism that stems from the great turn-of-the-century illustrator Howard Pyle and continues in the work of his student N.C. Wyeth N.C.'s son Andrew Wyeth and his grandson Jamie Wyeth. The thread that links the four artists is an imaginative often disquieting dreamlike imagery - 'the incarnation of the fantastic in everyday reality'. The colourful paintings - thirty by each artist - are brimming with madness mystery high emotion and drama. As Susan Larsen notes in the introduction this book 'is full of literary flights of fancy exotic adventures spiritual journeys romantic encounters and children's fables played out on the stage of ordinary life'. Other insightful essays examine the relationships among Pyle and the Wyeths suggesting how illustration and the fine arts intersect in their work. This is an enchanting collection of art by America's most famous family of artists." Small bump at bottom edge of front board. Taylor Judy collected and introduced by. Beatrix Potter.
LETTERS TO CHILDREN FROM BEATRIX POTTER.
London: Frederick Warne 1992. 240 pp small 4to 10 1/8" H. "The chief recipients of her letters were the family of her former governess Annie Moore. Beatrix wrote them long lively 'picture letters' copiously illustrated with witty drawings and full of funny anecdotes about her pets and her holidays. As she became established as an author she continued to write to young relatives members of her publisher's family and the enthusiastic fans who loved her books. Sometimes these letters take the form of a supposed correspondence between different animal characters from the Peter Rabbit stories all written in miniature with their own tiny envelopes. It is a measure of the delight with which Beatrix Potter's letters were received and treasured that so many of them have survived to this day. The picture letters and miniature letters in this book are shown in facsimile and it is illustrated with photographs and Beatrix Potter's own drawings. Judy Taylor has introduced each section with an account of the children who received the letters many of whose stories have never been told before. The result is an intriguing and attractive book that reveals much new information about Beatrix Potter and above all demonstrates her unfailing power to beguile children and adults alike." WALTER CRANE AS A BOOK ILLUSTRATOR.
New York: St. Martin's Press 1975. 105 pp 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour reproductions. "Walter Crane artist of Kensington was a man of many talents but possibly best known for his original and charmingly executed designs which made him the leading illustrator of children's books of the Aesthetic Movement period. In the face of the commercial vulgarity and ugliness of Victorian industrialised society he created a delicate and escapist fairy world which with its emphasis on spontaneity and mobility of line and its clever use of background and colour popularised a completely new style of tasteful book designs and brought them within the reach of everyone. The influence of Crane's work and his highly novel theories of design make him an important figure in nineteenth century art history. The author discusses Crane's style and ideas in a study delightfully arranged after Crane's own rules and book design. He includes nearly 100 illustrations ranging from nursery rhymes and fairytales to tailpieces and borders mostly full page as Crane designed them and 16 in the full colour he helped to pioneer. The extensive annotated catalogue is an invaluable aid for both student and specialist." Previous owner's bookplate on half title page. Poortvliet Rien.
IN MY GRANDFATHER'S HOUSE.
New York: Harry N. Abrams 1988. 240 pp oblong 10 1/4" H x 12 1/8" D. Beautifully illustrated in colour throughout. "The fascinating saga told with pen and brush of a rural family in old Holland - the Poortvliets - going back ten generations to Cornelis Adriaensz who died in 1649. Characteristically evocative Poortvliet's work is remarkable in its ability to touch us. With equal skill he conveys the coziness of a comfortable house set in a bleak and brooding snowy landscape and the light-hearted revelry of a winter carnival. This book does not conjure up a romantic vision of the past - the Dutch countryside was not all tulips and windmills. There was hardship and hard work like that of the young cowherd seen here - an eight-year-old boy whose long and lonely day began at four o'clock in the morning and only ended when he returned home at six o'clock in the evening. We learn of the many Dutch families in the early days who endured the deaths of five ten or more babies and of their joy in those that survived. We even learn of such nocturnal annoyances as the families of noisy mice that shared the straw mattresses of the country folk. The author's colorful heritage traced back to the 1600s while it does not include rich and famous people does include characters and stories to rival those of a soap opera in their intricacy and human interest. Those accounts are based on ancient documents such as birth and death certificates and church records some of which are reproduced. Exploring his own roots Poortvliet captures the beauty in the faces and in the lives of the country people of Holland as he illuminates their odyssey into modern times."
