Contemporary ruby-red morocco, elaborately gilt with gilt inner dentelle and giltstamped arms to both covers. Green moirée silk endpapers. Green silk divider. Only edition. Of all of Gironi's publications, all of which are of a similar nature, the present work on Greek music is one of the rarest, published in only 30 copies and printed on strong, very wide-margined wove paper. This is the dedication copy for Marie Louise, Archduchess of Austria and Duchess of Parma (1791-1847), the wife of Napoleon and daughter of Francis I (1768-1835), first Emperor of Austria, with a printed dedication dated May 1825 and sumptuously bound with the Austrian arms on both covers. - "Cette dissertation n'étant point destinée au commerce, il n'en a été tiré que trente exemplaires, et l'auteur en a fait hommage à une dame à l'occasion de son mariage. Les gravures sont d'après les dessins de peintres célèbres" (Brunet). - The eight hand-coloured aquatints, showing costumes and musical instruments, are blindstamped with Giulio Ferrario's monogram ("Il costume antico e moderno"). An entirely complete copy, showing only some slight spotting and some foxing to margins. Old catalogue description pasted to lower free endpaper. Traces of professional restorations to spine and hinges. Latterly in the collection of the legendary French maître coiffeur Louis Alexandre Raimon (1922-2008), hairdresser to film stars and aristocracy, with his ownership stamp to first free endpaper ("Collection Alexandre de Paris"). Notre exemplaire est une des très rares épreuves imprimées sur papier Japon, toutes petites traces de punaisage sur l'extrémité de la marge supérieure (Our plate is one of the few copies printed on Japanese paper. Original plate in good condition). LES MAITRES DE L'AFFICHE, prestigieuse publication d'art, éditée par l'atelier de lithographie Chaix, dont la parution s'étala de décembre 1895 à novembre 1900. Chaque livraison comportait 4 planches de reproduction en chromolithographie d'une remarquable qualité d'impression des plus belles affiches illustrées des grands artistes français et étrangers (auxquelles il faut ajouter 16 planches de lithographies originales offertes en prime aux abonnés). Lors de l'Exposition universelle de 1889, fut organisée la première exposition rétrospective dévolue à l'affiche, celle-ci devait valider la reconnaissance officielle d'appartenance de l'affiche au monde de l'art. Jules Chéret (1836-1932) y sera sacré '' Maître de l'affiche '', c'est aussi à cette date que Seurat commencera à collectionner les affiches de Chéret. ‎1791. In der Platte signiert "H. Wüest pinx. / W. F. Gmelin sculps.", datiert und betitelt. Ausgezeichneter malerischer Druck mit gleichmäßigem Rand um die Darstellung und mit Schriftrand. Auf festem Bütten. 35 x 47,5 cm (Darstellung).‎

‎Blick auf das Denkmal des Dichters und Staatsmannes Salomon Gessner im barocken Platzspitzpark in Zürich mit Figurenstaffage. Der geschätzte Bildhauer Alexander Trippel (1744 Schaffhausen - 1793 Rom) schuf das Denkmal, das mit Bezug auf die Dichtungen Gessners eine Szene aus "Daphins und Micon" darstellt. Gmelin, der in Basel die Grabsticheltechnik im Stil Johann Georg Willes erlernte, arbeitete schließlich überwiegend in Rom, wo er einen blühenden Handel mit Drucken betrieb. Die Radierung nach einer Zeichnung von Johann Heinrich Wüest (1741 - Zürich - 1821) entstand kurz nach seiner Ankunft in Rom (AKL Sauer, S. 274). - Vertikale Knickspur, geglättet. Durchgehend mit blassen Braunfleckchen, im Himmel etwas stärker. Papier partiell etwas ausgedünnt. Kleine Fehlstelle im linken Unterrand fachmännisch hinterlegt.‎

‎FAUST - Rare Bound Set - without any text‎

‎1826 Faust was Goethe's most celebrated creation with international editions in his lifetime and subsequently in films and books across the world with translations in most languages. This is a complete set of the 26 engravings Moritz Retzsh produced as an illustration of Goethe's text; the book has no words in it not even a publisher or date. What it does have is a fabulous set of the original plate pulls complete with plate marks. Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch was a German painter draughtsman and etcher; much celebrated in his day. This is in a way a fine example of what would now called a graphic novel. The 26 etched pictures tell the story and words are not needed. In Germany there were many such books without words and this one in particular influenced the English Pre Raphaelites. This volume is in its original binding with a very fragile leather spine which turns around to the original marbled cover boards which are also in a fragile state. There is no title page or date and no publishing house is mentioned. The corners are leather also and the spine has five subtly raised bands and no title. A much poorer copy of this was featured in the exhibition of Pre Raphaelites at Tate Britain. My copy is considerably better but it is by no means a fine one. It has been used and looked at probably a great deal over the last 200 years or so. The leather is very worn the marbled cover boards are patinated and there is a mixture of hand written names and an inscription on the front end paper. It is very rare in any state at all because it was easily broken up so the plates could be framed. This is I must stress a complete bound full set and as such it is very rare indeed. The earlier of the two dated inscriptions states 1826; but it cannot be viewed as an accurate issue date. An edition exists which has a German title page and text but this is not one of those. It's a bit of a mystery. The exhibited copy in the Tate exhibition was inspected by me I knew one of the curators and it was also without any text. International Edition. Hardcover. ‎Gestochene Kupferplatte (117:174 mm). Hübsches Bildnis der Madonna in Andacht, mit über die Brust gelegten Händen, nach einem Gemälde von Carlo Maratti (1625-1713). Signiert vom Pariser Kupferstecher Louis Gomier, der 1713-30 in Rom tätig war und auch nach Pietro da Cortona, Ciro Ferri und An. Carracci stach. "Zu seinen Hauptblättern gehören eine Ansicht der Bernini-Fontände und des Obelisken auf der Piazza Navona [...] Auch war er Mitarbeiter an Mich. Mercati's Metallotheca [...] und stach einige Porträts nach eigener Zeichnung, darunter die der Königin Marie Eleonore Jos. von Polen und des Fürsten Lubomirski" (Thieme/B. 14, 364). Die Platte trägt noch den Verlegervermerk "typis Salmoni" (wohl ein Hinweis auf den römischen Drucker Giovanni Generoso Salmoni?).‎
