The book was nearly complete already set in type at the time of Graves's unexpected death in 1960. After many years Joe's wife and partner Lucy Graves decided to complete this edition as the final Gravesend imprint complete with the prophetic tailpiece. An absolutely charming piece of Lexington history and most certainly a part of the private press movement that was burgeoning. No indication of the size of the edition. Notre exemplaire est une des très rares épreuves imprimées sur papier Japon, toute petite trace de punaisage dans l'extrémité des angles de la marge (Our plate is one of the few copies printed on Japanese paper. Original plate in good condition). LES MAITRES DE L'AFFICHE, prestigieuse publication d'art, éditée par l'atelier de lithographie Chaix, dont la parution s'étala de décembre 1895 à novembre 1900. Chaque livraison comportait 4 planches de reproduction en chromolithographie d'une remarquable qualité d'impression des plus belles affiches illustrées des grands artistes français et étrangers (auxquelles il faut ajouter 16 planches de lithographies originales offertes en prime aux abonnés). Lors de l'Exposition universelle de 1889, fut organisée la première exposition rétrospective dévolue à l'affiche, celle-ci devait valider la reconnaissance officielle d'appartenance de l'affiche au monde de l'art. Jules Chéret (1836-1932) y sera sacré '' Maître de l'affiche '', c'est aussi à cette date que Seurat commencera à collectionner les affiches de Chéret. 33x33 cm (49x5 x 38,5 cm hors-tout), L'artiste glaronaise Greta Leuzinger peint et grave depuis plus de 50 ans. Toute sa vie, l'artiste s'est intéressée à ce qui est simple et fondamental dans la vie : la relation de l'être humain à la nature, à la créature et à l'espace. Avec les moyens les plus simples et réduits, elle réalise ses idées d'image. Il apparaît que sa peinture s'est toujours développée en relation étroite avec la gravure lorsque l'on remarque l'importance du trait dans son travail ou découvre les éléments souvent gravés dès l'apprêt. Si l’on considère globalement l’évolution de l’œuvre de Greta Leuzinger, on peut observer à quel point elle a trouvé de plus en plus son propre langage de formes. Inspirée par ses voyages d'études à Paris, où l'artiste a appris le métier de graveur auprès de Stanley William Hayter (1955, 1958 et 1962), Greta Leuzinger a peint ses premiers tableaux sous l'influence des tendances parisiennes des années 50, notamment ‹ abstraction lyrique›. Ses symboles pictographiques caractéristiques, qui donnent le ton de son vocabulaire jusqu’à aujourd’hui, font déjà surface dans ses compositions du milieu des années 60. Il s'agit de motifs allégoriques récurrents – éléments stylisés de la nature – qui rappellent, ce n'est pas un hasard, les gravures rupestres du néolithique, puisque l'artiste a déjà visité les grottes de Lascaux en 1956 et plus tard (1966 et 1970) les dessins gravés dans la pierre du Val Camonica en Lombardie. L’oiseau – totem et chiffre existentiel de l’artiste est un motif qui constitue le fil conducteur de l'oeuvre picturale et graphique de Greta Leuzinger. Source : Kunsthaus Wien. Dans un superbe encadrement esthétiquement en accord parfait avec l'œuvre. (Feuille : 42,5 x 32,5 cm et sujet : 36,5 x 22,5 cm). Mourlot imprimeur. Tériade édieur (1955). Note historique : conçu dès 1920 par le poète et le peintre et soutenu par Léonce Rosenberg, le projet d'édition sera interrompu par l'inaction du marchand d'art puis la disparition de Juan Gris en 1927. C'est finalement Tériade qui reprendra le manuscrit complet de Reverdy, 20 poèmes illustrés de 11 lithographies en couleurs reprenant au plus près les compositions originales du peintre cubiste. Le Moulin à Café étant la première de l'album.

This complete two-volume set is embellished throughout with no less than 87 engraved plates including 29 folding and 36 in-text engravings. The magnificent engravings depict numerous Biblical scenes as well as the ancient coins of the period; the Enoch Hebrew Assyrian Phoenician Egyptian Copte Armenian and Chinese alphabets; astronomical observations; views of Jerusalem; scrolls and writing instruments; the first 13 Assyrian kings; footwear in Antiquity; mosaic floor tiles; Solomon's Temple etc. Moderate and sporadic rubbing along edges.
