Modern Masters of Etching 2: James McBey with TLS more
<p>A solid copy of this edition of reprints of 12 plates by McBey who was one of the more influential figures of the rise of etchings in the early 20th Century. The pages on this copy are moderately foxed; foxing does not affect the rectos of the tipped-in plates though a few have slightly visible stains on the versos.</p><p>Taped to the front free endpaper is a typed letter signed from McBey to Roi Partridge at Mills College from 1941 talking about a meeting while McBey was visiting the San Francisco area. Laid in are also three handwritten letters from McBey's wife Marguerite to Partridge and his wife his third wife May Ellen Fisher from 1941 and 1943 talking about photography their visits and potential future visits. Also included is a four-page prospectus for the Minton Balch edition of <em>The Etchings of James McBey</em> by Malcolm C. Salaman including list prices for the book in both its trade and limited editons with three reproductions of McBey etchings. The prospectus shows serious edge-wear not affecting the images. First published in 1745 and Dedicated to the Duchess of Portland, from whose most extensive collection it was compiled. Vertue derived much of the information for the life of Hollar from the younger Faithorne and Mr. F. Place, both of them engravers, who were very conversant with Hollar during his residence in London.

Prints. King Charles I. and the Heads of the Noble Earls, Lords, and others, who suffered for their Loyalty in the Rebellion and Civil-Wars of England. With their Characters engraved under each Print, extracted from Lord Clarendon. Taken from Original Pictures of the greatest Masters, many of them Sir Anthony Vandyke's, and all the Heads accurately engraved by Mr Geo. Vertue...
First edition, large folio, [2], 2pp., without the list of subscribers, engraved frontispiece and 10 engraved plates with a total of 26 portraits of royalists, letter-press title and preface, some minor spotting and light browning but overall the plates are very clean and bright, expertly rebound in cont. style calf calf, marbled boards, red morocco spine label, an attractive copy. Rare: ESTC locates only three copy in the UK (all at Oxford) and four copies in North America. A reason for the scarcity of the complete volume may be found in a note on the title page, which advises that: "As these Prints are an agreeable Ornament for Rooms, they may be had of the Proprietors in neat black Frames and Glasses". Vertue's parents had served in the court of the exiled James II, and the publication of this volume in praise of loyal servants to the Stuart crown in the year of Culloden may well suggest Jacobite sympathies. This may be signalled by couplet from Pope quoted in the frontispiece: "Rich Industry Sat Smiling on the Plain | And Peace, and Plenty, told a Stuart's reign."

Folio (430 x 320 mm), [4], 373, [3], liii, [1]pp., printed for private circulation only in 200 copies, early armorial bookplate to front paste-down, cont. half blue morocco, marbled boards, slightly rubbed otherwise a very good copy indeed. Printed uniformly with the catalogue of books and, like that work, printed only for presentation. The map collection was an important constituent of the Royal library (Samuel Johnson recommended buying maps locally in his famous letter to Barnard); The King's Topographical Collection of around 50,000 maps, charts, prints and drawings formerly owned by George III and donated to the Library by George IV, included antiquarian drawings by William Stukeley, large collections of views by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm, the Bucklers and Edward Blore, and the drawings from Captain Cook's voyages or Robert Hay's of Egypt. 5 Parts in one, 4to (275 x 220 mm), [4], 94, [4]; [4], 17, [3]; viii, [2], 99, [5]; [4], 53, [3]; [4], iv, 58pp., wide-margin copy, engraved portrait frontis., (a little spotted), all lots annotated in a neat contemporary hand with prices realised and buyers' names, MS biograpgy of Sir Mark Masterman Sykes copied from the Gentleman's Magazine April 1823 on front free-endpaper, cont. half morocco, marbled boards, rubbed, re-backed with original spine laid-down corners bumped, uncut, top edge gilt a very good copy. Sykes's collection of old master and modern prints was on as impressive scale as his library. Some 4500 lots were sold over a period of ten months for nearly ?18,000. On succeeding to the Estate a difficult decision had to be made by Sir Tatton Sykes. "A large sum of money had to be raised to pay off the considerable debt with which the Estate was encumbered. He did not wish to sell any land since this was the main source of the family's income and he was reluctant to part with his horses or hounds which represented his favourite pastime. This left his brothers works of art and his books. Though he had no trouble coming to a decision about the former, which comprised Italian paintings, sculptures, medals and coins, and a collection of some 50,000 prints "believed to be the rarest and best selected assemblage, particularly of portraits, of any private collection in the Kingdom", he has greater difficulty when it came to the latter, knowing the passion Mark had felt for them It is said that when the day came when the decision finally had to be made, he went and stood outside the door of the Library... the library itself being sold between the 11th and 24th May caused a sensation and buyers came from all over the world... Thomas Dibdin reflected "Never did the owner of such treasures so thoroughly enjoy them". The sale of the library and prints did not get the tiniest mention in Tatton's diaries.
