From a total edition of 320 copies, all printed on fine Marais wove paper. Hasegawa's engraving, "Anemones et fleurs de champs dans un verre a facettes" (Kyoto 368, also known as "Bouquet sur fond de dentelle"), is considered one of his masterpieces. Folio (38 x 28 cm). Loose as issued. Missing title-page and justification, but with complete text and all prints. The Cami and Jeannisson prints have a bit of mat burn on the recto and the Lemagny a bit on the verso. NUMBER ONE OF ONLY TEN SETS OF THIS OUTSTANDING PORTFOLIO OF EXPRESSIONIST ETCHINGS, WITH MANY OF THE ETCHINGS PRINTED ON OLD JAPANESE PAPER. In 1918 German novelist Hans Bethge wrote "Satuila oder vom Zauber der Suedsee" ("Satuila or the Enchantment of the South Sea"), the story of a young woman in Samoa. It is a sensual, escapist tale: the situation in Germany was quite terrible after the defeat in WWI, and there was great demand for escapism. This novel was a hit, and a deluxe edition, with 6 original etchings by German Expressionist artist Georg Alexander Mathey, was published in Berlin in 1921. The etchings are extremely beautiful, perfectly capturing the lush sensuality of the landscape and the unabashed sexuality of the characters (similar to the depictions of Gypsies by Otto Mueller, from about the same time). This edition of the novel was limited to 250 copies. Aside from the book edition, 10 sets of the etchings were printed, with large margins. In these 10 sets, each of the etchings is signed and numbered by the artist. I OFFER ONE OF THESE 10 SETS: SET NUMBER 1, with each of the etchings numbered 1/10 and signed in pencil by the artist. FOUR OF THE SIX ETCHINGS IN THIS SET ARE PRINTED ON OLD JAPANESE PAPER, AND ARE PERHAPS UNIQUE AS SUCH. Additionally, there is a signed working proof of an early version of one of the etchings, also printed on old Japanese paper. This proof is probably unique, as the etching was never published. The set is as it was issued. Each etching (sheet size 8 1/2 x 7 inches--22 x 18 cm) is individually matted, and the original parchment-backed cloth portfolio case (16 1/2 x 13 inches--42 x 33 cm). There is a little light wear to the portfolio, but the etchings are fine and bright. An important and extremely rare item (and perhaps the only German Expressionist depictions of the South Pacific!)

ONLY EDITION OF THIS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND RARE MONOGRAPH ON NANTEUIL (the title page says "second edition" because Loriquet's discourse--without the documentation--had previously been published in a periodical). 2 leaves; 154 pp. Aside from Loriquet's comments, this book contains extensive documentation concerning Nanteuil, all published for the first and only time: documents concerning his family, the text of his poetry, his opinions about printmaking, catalogues of all of his works in all media, the inventory of his estate, etc. EDITION LIMITED TO ONLY 100 COPIES, OF WHICH THIS IS ONE OF ONLY TEN COPIES WITH THE ENGRAVED FRONTISPIECE PORTRAIT OF NANTEUIL (by Varin after Nanteuil) IN TWO STATES. Louis Metcalfe, writing about Nanteuil in "Prints and Their Makers" (New York: Century, 1912), states that "In 1854, Charles Loriquet, curator of the library of Rheims, who had just completed a collection of Nanteuil's portraits for the city museum, addressed the Academy at one of its public sittings and eloquently pleaded with the authorities to erect a monument to him who he considered second only to the great Colbert as the most illustrious son of Rheims. His description of the artist and his work created such enthusiasm that he was later induced to publish it, together with some interesting documents concerning Nanteuil. The unique little book found its way into many libraries, private as well as public, and has ever since been unfindable." The copy I offer was in fact Metcalfe's, with his charming engraved bookplate on the front pastedown. Large 8vo. ELEGANTLY BOUND IN 19TH-CENTURY FULL MIDNIGHT MOROCCO BY AFFERNI (signed), with spine, borders, and turn-ins beautifully gilt. (Afferni was a Venetian binder, and his work rivaled that of the best French binders of the day.) All edges gilt. Tiny traces of wear to extremities, else FINE AND BRIGHT. A rare and important book.

Joseph in Prison (an original signed woodcut by Arthur C. Danto)
An original signed woodcut by Arthur C. Danto, executed in 1947 while he was an undergraduate at Wayne State University (he graduated in 1948). In this Expressionist image we see Joseph looking downcast in a dark cell, sitting on a bench with his ankle chained to the floor. 11 1/2" x 8 1/2" (block), 18" x 13" (sheet). Signed (A. Danto), dated ('47), titled (Joseph in Prison), and justified (3/25) in pencil. Only SIX IMPRESSIONS WERE ACTUALLY PRINTED, as indicated by the "6" at lower right (and confirmed by Danto). Monogrammed in the block. This is an extremely fine and rich impression, printed by the artist himself, on fine, thick, brownish-gray laid paper. A few marginal restorations, otherwise in excellent condition. Danto went on to have a successful career as an printmaker during the 1950s. In the early 1960s he turned to the philosophy and criticism of art, the field in which he achieved great acclaim. His early prints, dating from the 1940s, are of the greatest rarity. Possibly a unique survival.

Portfolio of 10 exquisite landscape etchings by Pierre Bazire, each of which is JUSTIFIED (10/15) AND SIGNED IN PENCIL. These etchings evoke the rustic, pastoral landscapes of southern France, bathed in soft sunlight. Additionally there is a title/justification leaf (signed by Gustave Arthur Dassonville, for whom the edition was printed) with an eleventh etching, and another signed proof of that etching (so 12 etchings in all, of which 11 are full-page, loose, signed, and justified). Printed on fine Arches wove paper. Folio. Loose as issued in cloth portfolio with paper label. FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects. Very rare (only 20 sets were printed: 1-15 and I-V).
