William Hamilton RA 1751 - 1801:RA Collection: People and Organisations.Born in Chelsea West London in 1751 Hamilton spent time studying in Italy before entering the Royal Academy Schools in 1769. Although he had previously studied architectural draughtsmanship he chose to pursue painting at this time. He exhibited four paintings at the Royal Academy in 1774 and by 1789 was elected as a Royal Academician. In the early part of his career Hamilton focused on portraitur but he later began to paint subjects from poetry history and the Bible.Hamilton was also employed by print galleries to illustrate popular themes and literature. His representations of Shakespearean scenes were not well-received but his rural scenes were fashionable. Perhaps the most popular of these were his illustrations to James Thomson’s The Seasons 1730. This poem describes rural Britain and reflects on the role nature plays as an intermediary between Heaven and Earth. Hamilton’s illustrations such as The Monarch Swain were published in 1797 engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi RA and P.W. Tomkins. There is a copy of the book in the Royal Academy Library. 18th Century unknown

Stitched blue-grey wrappers with label printed in red and black. Within original portfolio covered in the same glue-grey paper with matching printed label on the front and a spine label printed in red. Designed illustrated and printed by Leonard Baskin at the Gehenna Press Nov. 1957. Handprinted in Perpetua type. "The illustrations have been printed from six original boxwood engravings and one cherry woodcut on Amalfi Italian hand-made paper and on Moriki and Mending Tissue both hand-made in Japan." This is no. 635 of a limited edition of 975 copies from an edition of 1000; signed by Leonard Baskin. It was honored as one of the "Fifty Books of the Year 1957" by the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Book is in Near Fine Condition: front wrapper lightly creased from upper corner along fore-edge; clean and crisp. Portfolio is in Good Condition: both front sections are starting to separate along the front joints from the tail; color is faded; lacking small part of spine label; front label is complete and bright. Quarter Calf Calf Tips Over Marbled Boards Marbled Endpapers And With Matching Marbling To Edges Of Page Block. Captions Printed On The Tissue Guards. Binding Is Early Or Original Wear But Nicely Refurbished New Morocco Spine Label Hinges Intact And Solid. Contents Very Clean Light Foxing To A Few Plates But Almost All Are Entirely Clean And With Clean Intact Tissue Guards. Wordsworth Was The Youngest Son Of The Rev. Dr. Christopher Wordsworth Master Of Trinity And A Nephew Of The Poet William Wordsworth. He Was The Younger Brother Of The Classical Scholar John Wordsworth And Charles Wordsworth Bishop Of Saint Andrews Dunkeld And Dunblane. He Was Educated At Winchester And Trinity Cambridge. Like His Brother Charles He Was Distinguished As An Athlete As Well As For Scholarship. He Won The Chancellor's Gold Medal For Poetry In 1827 And 1828. He Became Senior Classic And Was Elected A Fellow And Tutor Of Trinity In 1830; Shortly Afterwards He Took Holy Orders. He Went For A Tour In Greece In 1832-1833 And Published Various Works On Its Topography And Archaeology The Most Famous Of Which Is "Wordsworth's" Greece 1839. In 1836 He Became Public Orator At Cambridge And In The Same Year Was Appointed Headmaster Of Harrow A Post He Resigned In 1844. In 1844 Sir Robert Peel Appointed Him As A Canon Of Westminster 1844-1869. He Was Vicar Of Stanford In The Vale Berkshire 1850-1869 And Archdeacon Of Westminster 1864-1869. In 1869 Benjamin Disraeli Appointed Him Bishop Of Lincoln Which He Retained Until His Death In 1885. <br/> <br/> William S. Orr & Co. hardcover

The Strahan Edition Has "Goblin" On Spine And Cover In Black But In The Routledge And This Lippincott Edition That Word On The Spine Is In Gilt. 30 B/W Illustrations In The Text Half-Page At Center Of Pages Signed With The Dalziels' Name In Plural And Hughes' Initials. Very Well Preserved Covers Clean All Gilt And Black Complete And Strong All Gilt Still Brilliant Rubbing And Wear To Cloth At Top And Bottom Of Spine And At Tips A Few Frays At Top And Bottom Of Spine And Pinpoint Frays At Three Of The Tips; Hinges Tight Original Off White Coated Endpapers No Cracking To Hinges No Names Or Marks No Repairs Slight Spine Lean.
