Spine and front board detached binding heavily worn text leaves lightly soiled. Plates fine with the exception of No. 13 which bears a very small stain and a larger one in the margin. Good plus. The scarce collection of exquisite engravings of city views of Antwerp by artist and master etcher and engraver Joseph Linning. Ditchling Sussex: St Dominic's Press 1930. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Derrick Thomas. No. 49 of 480 copies octavo size 45 pp. The Saint Dominic's Press founded by Harry Hilary Douglas Clarke Pepler flourished at Ditchling Sussex from 1916 to 1936. The first home of the Press was "a disused stable" with a hundred-year-old Stanhope hand-press which supposedly had belonged to William Morris. Pepler endeavored to do everything possible by hand believing that such would both produce the best results and also be a "more individual or 'humane'.product". He therefore "preferred the handpress to the machine handmade to machine-made paper and handset founder's type to the products of typesetting machines." <br /> <br /> Pepler met Edward Johnston and Eric Gill while living in Hammersmith; Pepler and his family would eventually move to Ditchling to join Gill who was one of the most important artists to provide illustrations for the St. Dominic's Press. Other artists who provided illustrations included David Jones Desmond Chute Philip Hagreen and Thomas Derrick among others. <br /> <br /> This a fascinating association copy: inscribed in the year of publication by Bede Jarrett OP "an English Dominican friar and Catholic priest who was a noted historian and author.who formally reinstated the Dominican order at the University of Oxford for the first time since the dissolution of the monasteries under King Henry VIII." Fr. Jarrett inscribed the volume in the front free endpaper: "For Mother Prioress O.P. / on / Sept. 8: 1930 her silver / Jubilee / from / F. Bede Jarrett O.P.". The Mother Prioress according to an inked notation next to the inscripton is Sr. M. Hyacinth Graham O.P. of whom alas we were unable to find any additional information. <br /> <br /> ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in quarter black cloth over paper covered boards title in gilt on the spine Ex-Libris of the Dominican Nuns St. Dominic's Priory Carisbrooke Isle of Wight on the front pastedown to which order presumably Sr. Graham belonged inscription on the front free endpaper as described above black and white reproduction of a portrait of Fr. T. Norton R.A.M. Composer & Director of the Music to the Chestnut St. Theatre.†Norton served as musical director at the Second Chestnut Street Theatre during the late 1820s a period when the house mounted a mixture of melodrama burletta opera excerpts and popular entertainments requiring resident musical supervision and arrangement. Theatre directors of music routinely composed incidental numbers glees and topical songs for stage performance and subsequent publication bridging the repertory of live performance and domestic music-making.<br /> <br /> Mister Punchinello! draws upon the well-known Punch and Judy puppet tradition. The text is lyrically straightforward built around the repeated refrain “Oh mamma I must be married to Mister Punchinello†suggesting a number intended for accessible vocal delivery rather than elaborate dramatic structure. The R.A.M. designation appended to Norton’s name—presented without elaboration on the imprint—appears as a professional credential typical of early nineteenth-century music publishing though he very well may have never attended the Royal Academy of Music.<br /> <br /> A representative survival from the intersection of Philadelphia theatre culture and early American sheet music production. Printed for William Daniell by Thomas Davison. 1814. 17 uncoloured aquatint plates mounted on India paper tissue-guards textblock complete but front and rear boards are disbound and only a fragment of the spine remains with the stamp of the library of the University of Pennsylvania on the front paste-down and blind stamped throughout but not affecting the plates. Marbled endpapers all edges gilt slight water stains to some pages edges browned but the plates are clean. 42.5 x 33.5cm. A very good example of Orientalist art. Robert Smirk 1752. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1786 became an associate in 1792 and in the same year an academician. Most of his paintings are small.Those for the story of the Hunch-back engraved by Daniell were in his happiest manner. He died in London 1845. Another similarly printed and sewn booklet with title page and colophon serves as a folder for a loose wood engraving of the frontispiece—this signed and numbered by Eichenberg on the bottom margin; all houses in publisher's slipcase with printed paper labels. Only light rubbing to the slipcase but the contents are nearly fine. A striking engraving portions of which have been employed to decorate the covers of each booklet as well as each colophon. Lacking the slipcase. A handsome copy with only light toning to the perimeters of the boards; contents clean. This copy with 4-page prospectus. <br /> <br /> This work was the first book issued by the Gravesend Press that was actually printed using the Graves' press in their stable by Graves and Jacob Hammer. Kredel's charming engraved pressmark of a sleeping pressman graces the final page. Graves writes about this in his Bibliographical Confession the donkey in the window was their family pet Patience. Graves operated the press as a sideline from about 1949 through to the end of his life in 1960 issuing scarcely more than half a dozen books. H. Richard Archer in a history of the Graves and his press published in The Kentucky Review Spring 1987 summarizes Graves's work thus: "All of the books whether pamphlets or bound books reflect the taste and high standards of a true amateur craftsman and as such they certainly qualify as choice examples from one of this generation's most distinguished private presses."
