Until that point, the world was confined to national and elitist forms of expression. At the beginning of the 1960s, the sector took its inspiration from Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian, Italian and French decoration. Genres were combined in a frenzied desire to live in symbiosis with one's time. The progress of technology strengthened the conviction that the individual had unlimited freedom and aroused the desire to inhabit in a new manner. Forms became rounder, furniture was in sync with a warm, playful, and anticonformist universe. Colours and decorative motifs took on the brilliance and fantasies of Pop Art and psychedelia. The living environment was transformed into a waking dream in which luxurious furniture in original materials and surprising objects were mixed, associated, for the first time, with early furniture. The end of the 1970s marked the advent of a period in which beauty and classic elegance gave way to a host of expressions that were unclassifiable and rejected any hierarchy. The postmodern period had arrived. Composed of a long introduction that provides a synoptic view and 32 monographs that describe its many faces, this book invites the reader to discover an exceptionally creative period and revels through an abundant iconography. He begins by thanking him for his 'kindness in the matter of the plate at New'. He called there that morning and has 'sent on Dr Russells letter of introduction' and has 'written to Dr Moyle' explaining his object and he hopes he will give him permission to have the photod. wh: I consider about the finest piece of dated H English Plate in existence -'. He continues: 'Plate has changed its position since years ago you & I used to talk about it & when you bought the pretty candlestick with the plain columns was it at Torquay' Although it is 'not so great as some of the arts - the skill of handicraft in Silver Plate & architecture seems to me fairly representative of the taste of early England.' 26 July 1904 and 16 Aug. no year. Furniture Historian. Two letters SIGNED by Macquoidone by amanuensis he apologises for this - unwell. 3 pages 4to and 4 pages 8vo good condition. He discusses matters which relate to their work on "A History of English Furniture" for which Slocombe provided illustrations - progress on a task; plans wishes; contact with owners/aristos ;travels; suggestions; a sketch of a table; and so on. WITH: a page of notes in Slocombe's hand headed "oak furniture I am to paint"; a typed letter with ms. addition from the Treasurer's House York 2 March 1903 to give facilities for photgraphing; sketches of a couch x 2 and a settee at Hornby Castle with instructions in Slocombe's hand as 26 July 1904; a letter from F.W. Archer 26 Feb. 1903 about the Duke of Leeds permission to paint furniture; a typed letter signed from H.P. Dean 2pp. about a visit by Macquoid his enthusiasm for a settee and his wish for Slcoombe to paint it. An interesting insight into the creation of Macquoid's furniture history. ISBN 9781851490370. The Dictionary of English Furniture by Ralph Edwards (1954 Revised Edition) is the most authoritative general work on English antique furniture ever published. The first edition of this work was published 1924-27. It was instantly recognised as the primary reference on the evolution of English furniture from the Middle Ages to the Late Georgian period. It was consistently in demand and soon went out of print. The Second Edition, published in 1954, was entirely revised and enlargedby one of the two original collaborators, Ralph Edwards, who at that time was Keeper of the Department of Woodwork at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He was an outstanding authority, well placed to produce such a mammoth revision. The Dictionary is, within its chronological limits, a comprehensive survey of the whole wide field of English domestic furniture. Later research has added details but the basic body of knowledge remains unchallenged. It remains the standard book referred to in all sale catalogues
