26 July 1904 and 16 Aug. no year. Furniture Historian. Two letters SIGNED by Macquoidone by amanuensis he apologises for this - unwell. 3 pages 4to and 4 pages 8vo good condition. He discusses matters which relate to their work on "A History of English Furniture" for which Slocombe provided illustrations - progress on a task; plans wishes; contact with owners/aristos ;travels; suggestions; a sketch of a table; and so on. WITH: a page of notes in Slocombe's hand headed "oak furniture I am to paint"; a typed letter with ms. addition from the Treasurer's House York 2 March 1903 to give facilities for photgraphing; sketches of a couch x 2 and a settee at Hornby Castle with instructions in Slocombe's hand as 26 July 1904; a letter from F.W. Archer 26 Feb. 1903 about the Duke of Leeds permission to paint furniture; a typed letter signed from H.P. Dean 2pp. about a visit by Macquoid his enthusiasm for a settee and his wish for Slcoombe to paint it. An interesting insight into the creation of Macquoid's furniture history. He continues: 'Plate has changed its position since years ago you & I used to talk about it & when you bought the pretty candlestick with the plain columns was it at Torquay' Although it is 'not so great as some of the arts - the skill of handicraft in Silver Plate & architecture seems to me fairly representative of the taste of early England.' The first edition of this work was published 1924-27. It was instantly recognised as the primary reference on the evolution of English furniture from the Middle Ages to the Late Georgian period. It was consistently in demand and soon went out of print. The Second Edition, published in 1954, was entirely revised and enlargedby one of the two original collaborators, Ralph Edwards, who at that time was Keeper of the Department of Woodwork at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He was an outstanding authority, well placed to produce such a mammoth revision. The Dictionary is, within its chronological limits, a comprehensive survey of the whole wide field of English domestic furniture. La redécouverte des archives de René Gabriel (1899-1950) à la bibliothèque de l'École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs a permis d'éclairer sous un jour nouveau l'oeuvre de ce décorateur, figure marquante du modernisme social et des années de reconstruction. René Gabriel connaît ses premiers succès en dessinant et produisant, jeune étudiant, ses propres papiers peints. Créateur de meubles, il reçoit à 23 ans la bourse Blumenthal et participe en 1925 à l'Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels, aux côtés de Francis Jourdain et des modernistes. Illustrateur, il est également décorateur de théâtre et scénographe, notamment pour ses amis Léon Chancerel et Louis Jouvet. En retrait des grandes figures des années 20, René Gabriel se distingue de ses contemporains par son rejet du luxe et de l'ostentation. Alors que le meuble industriel semblait condamné à équiper ateliers et collectivités depuis près d'un siècle, Jacques Hitier réussit à répondre aux désirs des particuliers. Associé à la firme Tubauto, il invente un style où le tube de métal s'intégre à l'intimité du logement, par la souplesse des lignes, la douceur des matières et la gaieté des couleurs. Cette monographie, réalisée à partir des archives conservées par sa famille, retrace le parcours de Jacques Hitier, avec des pages thématiques mettant en avant les temps forts de sa carrière, et des notices descriptives présentant ses oeuvres emblématiques.

Le style Art Deco, extraordinaire foisonnement d'idees et d'audaces, a succede aux floraisons lyriques qui, sous le nom d'Art Nouveau ou encore de Modern Style, ont marque le passage du XIXe siecle au XXe siecle. Sans presumer de l'avenir, on peut dire qu'il constitue la derniere expression vraiment originale de l'art francais avant l'eclectisme et l'internationalisation - on dirait aujourd'hui la mondialisation - de la seconde moitie du siecle. Cette nouvelle version du Mobilier Art Deco - publie pour la premiere fois en 1981 - reprend l'essentiel des textes des editions precedentes, y compris le chapitre sur les paquebots ajoute en 1990. Toutefois, nombre de notices ont ete completees. L'illustration a fait l'objet d'une reactualisation grace a l'apport de photographies en couleurs.
