He is best known as the painter of the Homages to the Square, a series of over 2,000 seemingly tightly controlled experiments in the interaction of colour. Yet he did not begin these pictures until he was in his sixties, already several decades into his career as an artist, maker and theorist, much of it pursued in the United States following the Nazi dissolution of the Bauhaus in 1933. Misunderstanding of the Homages reflects a wider misreading of Albers' life and work. Married to the textile artist Anni Albers, his papers include letters from fellow artists John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Serra and Eva Hesse; colleagues such as Buckminster Fuller and Philip Johnson; and fans and collectors ranging from the composer Virgil Thomson to the cartoonist Saul Steinberg. If his network of influence was surprisingly wide, so, too, were his interests. Albers started life at the Bauhaus as a glassmaker, ran their renowned wallpaper workshop, and designed furniture that is still in production eighty years later. He pioneered the study of colour at Black Mountain College, organized its famed Summer Sessions' with guest tutors from Willem de Kooning to Merce Cunningham, and went on to head the design department at Yale. Drawing on extensive unpublished writings, documents and illustrations, Darwent offers a broad view of not only the artistic and political currents, but also the friendships and rivalries that formed the backdrop to Albers' creative output.

Het unieke succesverhaal van Extremis, dat op enkele jaren tijd een internationale reputatie verwierf als trendsetter op het gebied van buitenmeubilair, is sterk gelinkt aan de bevlogen persoonlijkheid en veelzijdige talenten van deze ontwerper-ondernemer, die het klappen van de zweep al heel jong leerde als zoon van een meubelmaker-schrijnwerker. Meer dan wie ook laat hij zich inspireren door een geengageerde visie op design. Hij heeft een duidelijke boodschap. Design is niet zomaar een kwestie van stijliconen of glamourdingen, maar veel meer van innovatieve oplossingen die van de wereld hopelijk een betere plek kunnen maken, vandaar de titel Design Works? Overtuigd maar ook altijd met de moed om vraagtekens te plaatsen. Sinds 2007 bestaat Dirk Wynants Design Works of (dw)2 autonoom en staat het naast Extremis ook open voor externe ontwerpopdrachten. Dirk Wynants sleepte sinds de start van Extremis in 1994 talloze internationale onderscheidingen in de wacht. Van de meest prestigieuze designerkenningen tot awards voor design management, algemeen management en export (waaronder Henry van de Velde Awards, Interior Innovation Award, (IMM Koln), Red Dot Award, International Excellence Design Award). As a son of a cabinet maker, Dirk Wynants (?°1964), was brought up with a nose for good design and a healthy dose of entrepreneurship. He studied interior and furniture design at Sint-Lucas School for Architecture in Ghent (Belgium) and was involved in the distribution of international design brands, until he established Extremis (1994), a label and brand for his own designs. Extremis' outdoor furniture designs quickly grew into an international standard of excellence. Not only the design collection itself has been applauded and awarded many times (with several Henry van de Velde Awards, Interior Innovation Award, (IMM Koln 2005), Red Dot Award 2005, International Excellence Design Award 2007, ao.), the expertise of Extremis in the field of design management, general management and export was praised just as well. In 2007 the creative unit of Extremis continued under the name Dirk Wynants Design Works = (dw)?, to enable the company to take on external design tasks. Dirk Wynants is still managing director and main designer of Extremis, but is also working closely together with other internationally renowned designers.
