These massive receipt and invoice ledger books provide an invaluable historic record of commerce and business in the thriving German-American furniture and lumber businesses of Texas at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Kunz and Kuenemann operated as partners and then solely as Kuenemann after 1896 as reflected in the invoices addressed to the companies during the 1890s. Both were significant furniture craftsmen as well as operating sales rooms general hardware stores and lumber yards with Kuenemann’s furniture pieces prized by collectors and museums as fine examples of 19th-century Texan furniture. In addition each of these ledgers contains a manuscript index with thumb tabs arranged alphabetically identifying the many different company invoices referenced within the ledgers. According to the Annual Occupation Tax Receipts paid during these periods by the companies and included in the ledgers the Kunz part was generating more than $ 3000 and less than $ 5000 per annum while the Kuenemann at the time was only generating less than $ 3000. In order to satisfy their burgeoning furniture manufacturing businesses the companies ordered hinges screws nuts bolts washers rivets hammers varnish by the barrels pedestals mouldings glass mirrors wire springs for beds brushes paint and much more. To fulfill their retail operations the orders encompassed such items as tables chairs coats ovens cribs bookcases bookshelves pedestals steel velocipedes steel wagons bicycles mattresses window shades meat cutters China bisque dolls undressed and dressed Bisque China Doll Heads rubber balls and so much more. These original documents convey the vibrancy and breadth of economic activity of related businesses within Texas at the time representing such companies as Frank J. Beitel Dealer in Calcasieu Louisiana & Texas Lumber in Kerrville & San Antonio TX; a significant percentage show large amounts of varnishes oils & paints supplied by James Bute Jobber Paints Oils in Houston TX; hinges nails screws brushes furnishings and more from Elmendorf & Co. Spencer & Co. Wholesale Yellow Pine Lumber from their Long Leaf LA mill and San Antonio TX offices. The beautifully steel-engraved vignette letterheads provide excellent examples of 19th-century printing but also offer detailed architectural vignettes of stores factories and operations across the South and Midwest. Both Kunz & Kuenemann maintained extensive contacts with furniture manufacturers suppliers and other industrial suppliers in St. Louis MO buying everything from chairs and desks out of Heller & Hoffman and the Lammert Furniture Co. to Trunks & Traveling Bags from the Herker & Meisel Trunk Co. Factory. Trunks & traveling cases were very popular with several different suppliers including the Lau Brothers in Louisville KY and James A. Quirk in St. Louis MO as well. White Sewing Machine Company supplied sewing machine cases tables and sewing machines the Wagner & Chabot Crockery Co. in San Antonio shipped billiard tables and saloon fixtures while Rice Baulard & Co. supplied most of the company paint oil and glass. The first of the two photo albums opens with photos of horse-drawn parade floats in the Fredericksburg TX founders parade of January 1908 followed by photos of the Kuenemann family riding in carriages the women fishing camping scenes swimming possibly in the Colorado River as well as visit to Galveston TX along with photos of US Naval ships in port. Kunz 1854-1932 was a Prussian-American cabinet maker who first emigrated to the United States after the Civil War to join the fast-growing German-American community in Texas and quickly built one of the largest furniture manufacturing and sales firms in Fredericksburg TX whose historic home constructed in the late 1870s is still standing at 108 North Acorn. Heinrich Kuenemann 1843-1914 was the son of Frederick Kuenemann a German cabinet maker who sailed from Bremen Germany in 1845 and in 1869 marred Dorothea Tatsch while apprenticing to noted Prussian-American woodworker Johann Peter Tatsch best remembered for his Biedermeier style furniture. Kuenemann took over the family home and three adjoining town lots in 1875 with his business complex eventually encompassing furniture shops lumberyard and hardware store on Main Street and by the 1880s had substantially enlarged the historic Kuenemann home first purchased in 1866 probably built by Heinrich Schupp in 1847. The home still stands at 413 W. Creek St. and now serves as a Bed & Breakfast in Fredericksburg TX.
