Masterpieces in Miniature.
Grand Rapids Michigan.: Berkey & Gay. 1916. Sixty-three page furniture catalogue approximately 4 x 5 inches picturing furniture manufactured in the styles of various eras; for example: Sheraton Elizabethan Jacobean Colonial Louis XVI Chippendale etc. Berkey and Gay was incorporated in Grand Rapids Michigan in 1873 and continues furniture-making to this day. The company writes in the preface to the booklet that "'Masterpieces in Miniature' has been prepared to show potential customers a partial representation of our immense line of furniture. It is called a 'Miniature' because the illustrations in it are reproductions of fifty of the plates shown in our large Portfolio of Photogravures which can be seen at furniture stores handling our product. It will give you a general idea only of some of our suites because so great is the reduction in size of the original plates it is impossible to bring out the details. All that can be done is to give you a glimpse of each particular suite." Elsewhere in the Preface they write of the Portfolio of Photogravures: "This Portfolio is something out of the ordinary. It costs the dealer $50.00. It is the most modern way of showing designs of furniture that has as yet been devised." The company advertised their furniture as being of such quality as to justify the term "Your Children's Heirlooms." "Masterpieces in Miniature" was available to the public for six cents payable in postage stamps.
