Poster designed by Robert Frank. <br /> <br /> Director Robert Frank's first feature film in which he follows poet Peter Orlvosky and his mentally ill brother Julius as they move through the late 1960s Beat scene while Peter tries to care for his mostly catatonic brother. When Julius wanders off he is replaced in the film by actor Joseph Chaikin. The film examines the boundaries of reality and sanity and features the screenwriting debut of Sam Shepard and the first feature film appearance of Christopher Walken. <br /> <br /> The film was restored and released by Steidl in 2007 along with a book publication outlining the film. From the Steidl book: "Frank's feature debut was first screened in 1968 at the Venice Film Festival. Everything which had defined Frank's art up to that point turns up in this film - the look at America 'from the outside' the poetic libertinage of the Beats the marginal in a central role. It celebrates the return of the poetic essay as assemblage the affirmation of the underground as a wild cinematic analysis in the form of a collage and skillfully weaves together opposites plays counterfeits against the authentic pornography against poetry acting against being Beat cynicism against hippie romanticism monochrome against colored. Clair is seen with fans giving a speech signing autographs conducting a recorded interview and cavorting with stars of the film like Colette Castel Alfred Adam and Annie Fratellini. The festivities seem to take place in a large music hall with musicians and traditional instruments appearing in a few photos. Bourvil is also present in two contact prints seen traveling cavorting with Clair getting a shave and playing bocce. Several with brief numerical annotations in manuscript pencil and a few double weight photographs with rubberstamps crediting photographer Martin on the versos. <br /> <br /> A businessman Noiret wants to buy land around the village of Cabosse claiming his desire for seclusion but with intentions to sell the water from the village fountain purportedly a fountain of youth. <br /> <br /> Shot on location throughout France. <br /> <br /> Photos range from 4.5 x 7 inches to 8 x 10.5 inches most are 7.25 x 9.25 inches with 87 frames on 35mm and medium-format negative strips. Four vintage photographs from the 1933 film one double weight and sepia one double weight and black-and-white and two single-weight and sepia.<br /> <br /> Based on William Faulkner's 1931 literary potboiler "Sanctuary" about a wealthy southern belle who goes to trial for murdering the violent bootlegger who abducted her and forced her into prostitution. Every bit as controversial as the source material the film's depiction of sexual violence was graphic and shocking even among films of the era and along with the same year's equally sensational "Baby Face" was directly responsible for the stricter enforcement of the Production Code in 1934 bringing the pre-Code era to a close. <br /> <br /> George Raft then under contract to Paramount was assigned the role of the bootlegger but found the part repulsive and went to battle with the studio in a suit that nearly cost him his career. <br /> <br /> Unavailable for decades outside of 16mm bootlegs the film was restored by the Museum of Modern Art in 2011 and screened at the TCM Classic Film Festival but still awaits a commercial release. <br /> <br /> Photographs between 9.75 x 7.5 and 8 x 10 inches. The subsequent film maintains the original novel's oneiric style. Bute and her husband Ted Nemeth were longtime collaborators and Nemeth worked as both cinematographer and producer of the film. The first film in Pudovkin's "revolutionary trilogy" followed by "The End of St. Petersburg" 1927 and "Storm Over Asia" 1928 and a key film in the development of montage techniques in film although in contrast to his colleague Eisenstein Pudovkin tended to use montage to capture individual character rather than mass movements. <br /> <br /> Six pages in self wrappers. Archive of 36 press photographs taken on the set of the 1959 film mounted to four printed card stock proof sheets from "Telerama" magazine with each sheet containing manuscript ink annotations with the name of the production credits for Renoir and photographer R. Saguet and with three dated January 26 1959 and one dated April 4 1959. Accompanying the photographs are 35 negatives for photographs in the archive and 1 negative for a photograph that was not struck and mounted. <br /> <br /> All the photographs featuring cast and crew working on the set and 16 feature images of Renoir on the set. <br /> <br /> Also included are two vintage borderless press photographs depicting scenes for the film. Each with the stamp of "Telerama" on the verso along with manuscript annotations identifying the film and for layout. <br /> <br /> Renoir's loose adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" premiering at the Venice Film Festival followed by airing on French television and an international theatrical release. <br /> <br /> Proof photographs and negatives roughly 2 x 2 inches.
