A Russian-Hungarian co-production "The Red and the White" was originally commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution in Russia in which the Bolsheviks seized power. However Jancso chose to set the action two years later in 1919 and showed Hungarian irregulars supporting the Communist "Reds" in fighting the Tsarist "Whites" as the two sides battled for control in the hills overlooking the Volga river. As well as deviating on the required setting Jancso also chose to use a radically different approach to the film than that expected. Rather than shooting a hagiographic account of the birth of Soviet communism Jancso produced a profoundly anti-heroic film that depicts the senseless brutality of the Russian Civil War specifically and all armed combat in general. <br /> <br /> 7.75 x 3.5 folded 15.25 x 10.75 unfolded. An uncommon film for its time it highlights the racism Native Americans had to endure from settlers of the Old West. <br /> <br /> A difficult shoot which included a severe back injury sustained by Audrey Hepburn when she fell off a horse director John Huston was unhappy with his producer's insistence on releasing a more commercially friendly film. While<br /> Hepburn and Huston would both eventually distance themselves from the film "The Unforgiven" remains a bold powerfully raw take on the Western with arguably some of the best performances of many of the actors involved. <br /> <br /> 20 x 25.5 inches. Poster designed by Robert Frank. <br /> <br /> Director Robert Frank's first feature film in which he follows poet Peter Orlvosky and his mentally ill brother Julius as they move through the late 1960s Beat scene while Peter tries to care for his mostly catatonic brother. When Julius wanders off he is replaced in the film by actor Joseph Chaikin. The film examines the boundaries of reality and sanity and features the screenwriting debut of Sam Shepard and the first feature film appearance of Christopher Walken. <br /> <br /> The film was restored and released by Steidl in 2007 along with a book publication outlining the film. From the Steidl book: "Frank's feature debut was first screened in 1968 at the Venice Film Festival. Everything which had defined Frank’s art up to that point turns up in this film – the look at America 'from the outside' the poetic libertinage of the Beats the marginal in a central role. It celebrates the return of the poetic essay as assemblage the affirmation of the underground as a wild cinematic analysis in the form of a collage and skillfully weaves together opposites plays counterfeits against the authentic pornography against poetry acting against being Beat cynicism against hippie romanticism monochrome against colored. The first film in Pudovkin's "revolutionary trilogy" followed by "The End of St. Petersburg" 1927 and "Storm Over Asia" 1928 and a key film in the development of montage techniques in film although in contrast to his colleague Eisenstein Pudovkin tended to use montage to capture individual character rather than mass movements. <br /> <br /> Six pages in self wrappers. Clair is seen with fans giving a speech signing autographs conducting a recorded interview and cavorting with stars of the film like Colette Castel Alfred Adam and Annie Fratellini. The festivities seem to take place in a large music hall with musicians and traditional instruments appearing in a few photos. Bourvil is also present in two contact prints seen traveling cavorting with Clair getting a shave and playing bocce. Several with brief numerical annotations in manuscript pencil and a few double weight photographs with rubberstamps crediting photographer Martin on the versos. <br /> <br /> A businessman Noiret wants to buy land around the village of Cabosse claiming his desire for seclusion but with intentions to sell the water from the village fountain purportedly a fountain of youth. <br /> <br /> Shot on location throughout France. <br /> <br /> Photos range from 4.5 x 7 inches to 8 x 10.5 inches most are 7.25 x 9.25 inches with 87 frames on 35mm and medium-format negative strips. Seven years after its release Hungarian playwright and concentration camp survivor Ferenc Herczeg sued MGM for plagiarizing his 1903 play "Seven Sisters." Paramount legally adapted the play into a film in 1915. However during the 1941 production of "Seven Sweethearts" Herczeg was imprisoned within a Nazi concentration camp. Subsequently he only learned of the film's existence years after his release. The suit settled out of court for a substantial sum of money. <br /> <br /> Script is lacking front cover and some early pages. Item also includes a three-page cast and crew list on Cinema Center Films letterhead. <br /> <br /> Jack Lemmon plays a jaded nearsighted cartoonist who falls for a single mother of three Barbara Harris against his own bachelor tendencies. The film utilizes a combination of both live action and animated scenes in order to portray Thurber's life as he himself had done. <br /> <br /> Set in Manhattan. <br /> <br /> 8 x 10 inches.
