Pink film is a broad genre of low budget Japanese softcore films though often with artistic and visual inventiveness and narrative drive far beyond their American counterparts. Modern scholars have acknowledged Masters' influence on British historical fiction and in later works his relative sympathy towards Indian nationalists while simultaneously criticizing his revisionist occasionally imperialist tone.
